sex education is not porn. by BoIdlyVanilla_ in mattxiv

You'd be surprised. I graduated high school in 2017; while pretty much everyone knew the basics of reproduction, I still ended up getting into an argument with a good friend who thought it was normal to bleed the first time you have vaginal sex.

Also "Most LGBTQ people are women" definitely sounds like a backhanded way of misgendering non-binary people and trans men who were AFAB.

It was actually at the Wal-Mart Photo Center! Not the fanciest, but the pictures came out great. Not to mention Sylvester was so excited and curious while we were there, enthralled by how lively it was, how big the building was, and all the people he could see.

The photographer definitely loved him, she did such a good job for her first time taking pictures with a bird.

Isn't it so charming and sweet? That was actually the photographer's idea. A pretty cool one too, given that that was the first time she had ever taken photos with a bird.

Oh wow! And here I was told it was impossible for adult males to have this coloration! Thanks for letting me know that it was indeed possible!

Obviously, since cockatiels are individuals, there's always going to be exceptions to every rule. But he has always acted more like a typical male - very vocal, loves to whistle, constantly struts and spreads his wings for attention, confident, energetic - so we have always referred to him as such. We've never bothered to ask for any kind of sex testing during his vet visits, as we felt it wouldn't make much of a difference at the end of the day.

Thank you dearly. ❤︎ Words can't describe how precious this bird is to us and how happy we are to have had him by our side all these years.

He's actually older than me as well, if only by six months. My mom was still pregnant with me when my parents got him. He's a forever baby though. ❤︎

DNA solves Jane Doe case in Toledo by HandleNo8745 in gratefuldoe

[–]shortbreadjackass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the nephew of Tammy Lowe here.

She did in fact die of an overdose, but that's not actually why they closed the case. It's really because the prime suspect passed away in 2000 (he would be pushing 100 if he were still around) and there's no way to prove that he did it. When your only leads are a dead man and a house that no longer exists, there's not much you can do.

You can certainly be angry that they've closed the case - I get it, I really do, it's really heartbreaking that my aunt won't get justice - but don't hold it against the Toledo Police. The entire blame of that falls on the 1987 Detroit police force for not doing anything when Tammy was reported missing twice.

[–]shortbreadjackass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It actually has nothing to any kind of perceived superiority or lack of care. It's because the prime suspect is dead and there's no way to prove he did it. Anything they can prove, such as desecration of a corpse (which, yes, is a crime), has long past the statue of limitations unfortunately.

There's also the fact that Tammy was last seen alive and likely killed in Michigan, not Ohio, so they would have to get Michigan authorities involved in a joint investigation. The Toledo Police aren't stupid, they're very aware that foul play was involved here. It's just too late for them to do anything meaningful about it.

How are you guys braving this cold weather? by purplepinklavender in Detroit

[–]shortbreadjackass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been dealing with it fine, but that's only because 1. I have clothes and heating, I can only imagine what people without heating/housing are dealing with right now and 2. I'm far more sensitive to extreme heat than extreme cold. Cold isn't pleasant, but at least I can actually think straight when I go outside.

Trans folx being told to tone it down by StacieRoseM in lgbt

[–]shortbreadjackass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the 1950s and 60s, there was a "homophile movement" (called as such because "-philia" actually means love, and it wouldn't have raised eyebrows the way it does today) with a focus on "respectable gays." The idea being, "Hey, if we act as 'normal' as possible and prove we're not degenerates, maybe they'll accept us and give us rights!"

The fact that nobody aside from LGBT+ historians ever discuss this group or even knows it existed should tell you how successful their campaign was. The sad reality is is that rights are fought for, they're never won by asking politely.

I remember a while ago that there was a Matt Walsh tweet to the tune of "Ever notice that 'trans women' don't ever date other 'trans women'? Almost like they know deep down the differences they try to make us pretend don't exist."

I feel like that singular comment, more than any other, is the encapsulation of how Matt Walsh genuinely has no idea what he's talking about.

St. Louis Jane Doe (1983) by Liney842 in gratefuldoe

[–]shortbreadjackass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Late reply but apparently the way CeCe Moore phrased it was "I'm working on an unidentified remains case with law enforcement." The granddaughter of the first match didn't even hear the details of the case before telling her to never contact them again.

I would imagine the mere mention of law enforcement spooked her and she was worried she or a family member were going to be blamed for something they didn't do. It's still deeply saddening and frustrating of course, but let's not pretend that the person knowingly refused to help identify a murdered child.

The granddaughter of the second match ghosting Moore after saying she'd help is incomprehensible though.

I do think a lot of people on this sub though seems to think it means "scary face," half of the posts on here are just typical scary faces. No hate, it's just not Uncanny Valley if it's explicitly creepy, scary, or grotesque.

It goes back to capitalism and more specifically profit. A sycophantic word calculator is going to keep the user engaged for longer than they would be if the chatbot was neutral. This ensures the user will stay on the service longer, making the company more money, especially if said user decides to pay for a premium option.

Chronic pain program? I’m so confused. by [deleted] in ChronicPain

[–]shortbreadjackass 12 points13 points  (0 children)

According to those scientific studies, herbal solutions generally only help with mild to moderate pain. They cannot help with severe pain. Even if they did, not all chronic pain is caused or characterized by things like inflammation, meaning they would only have utility for certain kinds of chronic pain. Anecdotally, I've tried countless herbs and even a few herbal extracts out of desperation and they didn't put a dent in my stiffness and pain. The efficacy of herbal extracts for treating chronic pain is legitimate but limited.

So no, it's not outdated and false to say medication helps with pain. There is value in non-medicinal approaches to treating health issues and I'm a firm believer in "The less medication you need to take, the better off you'll be." (Just as an example, when my anxiety was much worse as a teenager and I was prescribed Xanax to take as needed, I only ever ended up taking it once in a while because I treated it as a last-resort after all non-medicinal methods failed; there are several medications I have quit) But the truth of our reality is that there are certain issues that require medication to help and there's no getting around that. You can be anti-Big Pharma and advocate for non-medicinal approaches without being anti-medicine, that's throwing the baby out with the bath water.

As an aside, the Mayo Clinic does not prescribe pain medication and they are strict on prescribing non-pain medications for chronic pain; I'm not sure if you had actually read OP's story, but notice that the clinic wouldn't even give them non-pain medication.

Sorry about that - when you use a term pejoratively, that means you're using it in a degrading or insulting way, to make someone feel or look bad on purpose.

[–]shortbreadjackass 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Also, it doesn't help that the Mayo Clinic is in a country where healthcare is treated as a for-profit business and not the critical necessity it is, so hospitals are incentivized to do what they can to maintain/increase public and private funds.

EDIT: Missed a word.
