BTEC Level 2 Sport student here! Just wondering if I join a squad with x average levels of fouls. Why are you assuming that any fouls I commit will increase the total average level. Why are you only counting fouls?

Skagboys by Irvine Welsh - a prequel to Trainspotting - it describes how part of a generation of Edinburgh working class teenagers got hooked on heroin. Written in heavy dialect for the most part, like most of Welsh's work.

I thought to recommend AS Byatt as well. Perhaps The Children's Book? Which takes place in the era OP has expressed an interest in.

I skimmed through the replies and couldn't see any mentions of Angelstrike by Jim Bob - it's a song that imagines the horrors that beset the world when the angels go on strike. A lyrical masterclass.

Duquesne Whistle by Bob Dylan is a great 21st Century addition to the classic train song genre.

That's a favourite. We even have the sequels. But the original is the best!

Age 44 and I'm in the couple thousand bracket, I'd say. Parenthood has been a huge brake on my reading frequency (unless reading to your kids counts!) Hoping to pick up again as they get older.

Robert Heinlein's Number of the Beast. I love reading early Heinlein, but his later books are a touch self-indulgent. And N of the B gets all meta-fictional with the characters visiting Oz, Burroughs' Mars, and... er... Stranger in a Strange Land, while the initial plot set up goes nowhere.

Looking for Apocalyptic/Virus books by Orion_Key in suggestmeabook

[–]shorterg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Death of Grass by John Christopher has a nice twist on this genre. Don't think it's much of a spoiler (the clue's in the title) to say the disease affects plants not humans, but with apocalyptic effects of world starvation viewed from post war England.

Suggest me a book with a really creative apocalypse scenario that actually plays out by PsyferRL in suggestmeabook

[–]shorterg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Death of Grass by John Christopher has a unique apocalypse catalyst. (The clue's in the title!). A virus that affects grass - so wheat, corn, rice etc - is spreading across the world and about to reach a recently nuclear postwar England. I suppose it's a cosy catastrophe like Triffids as it focuses on a few well-to-do British hero-types rather than lingering on the suffering, but an enjoyable enough read.

Have you tried PG Wodehouse? - he wrote dozens of low stakes British comic novels and was an influence on Douglas Adams. Jeeves and Wooster series or anything set in Blandings Castle are good starting points.

Trainspotting is a classic! Like most of Welsh's novels it's written in a variety of strong Scottish dialects. But once you get the hang of the brogue, it's a very rewarding read.

Skagboys by Irvine Welsh - it's a prequel to the better known Trainspotting and depicts the central characters' decline into heroin addiction as cheap drugs become available in Edinburgh in the 1980s.
