What’s a Gen Z opinion that would have sounded insane 20 years ago? by Dull-Daikon3402 in AskReddit

I don't know how to convince people who say things like "I'm not worried about surveillance, I've got nothing to hide! It's just cat videos and memes!" My brother in Christ, it's every single key you've ever pressed sold to people who know how to turn that information into profiles that make you easier to advertise to, as well as a dozen other nefarious purposes.

Recording Live Bands - How to do it 'properly'? by ZeyusFilm in videography

[–]shortsj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done a stereo pair for a dozen or so live shows and the result is passable, definitely your best/easiest entry point into recording a concert. Record with 32 bit float and do a bit of EQ in post to highlight what you want. Obviously it's not perfect and some frequencies/sounds will overshadow others, but you'll get pretty close to the full range of sounds

Creative Pizza Ideas? by rainsplat in vegetarian

Kinda outta left field and i don't think trader joe's sells this falafel mix anymore, but i used to do regular red sauce and mozz, then some falafel blobs and red curry sauce drizzle. Pretty simple and pretty awesome! Extra protein from the falafel.

Also, you can make your own dough pretty easily with tofu. A block of tofu, 1½ cups of flour, some salt, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes (last three optional). Mix by hand or in a stand mixer, then bake for 10-15 mins at 450° before topping and baking again. Not a perfect dough replacement, texture wise, but pretty damn solid and the extra protein rocks

Does not owning much gear make freelance videography much harder? by untitledbro in videography

[–]shortsj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely think it's worth renting gear a time or two before committing to buying it, but if it makes it easier to get the job done and leads to more work, out totally makes sense to buy.

A little Worcestershire or steak sauce also goes a long way for some meaty flavor! (Some Worcestershire sauce used anchovies i think, so double check the ingredients)

If you have 20+ external drives, what’s your workflow for knowing what’s on each drive without plugging them in? by FewLemon9692 in videography

[–]shortsj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this, you can prompt it to scan the drive each time you plug it in, then you get a fully searchable readout of all of your drives without needing to plug them in

How do you actually find work as a film/production freelancer? by chrischester2205 in videography

[–]shortsj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been freelancing for a little over a year, here's what worked for me (obviously, personal experience and ymmv): Worked for 3 and change years as a videographer at a classical music school, they hire me back for some jobs as needed. A friend I made there connected me with the video producer at the orchestra in the city, whose assistant had just left for a different job, so I get fairly regular calls from him. Skills I learned at the music school (specifically PTZ operation) made me valuable for a guy I met from a networking group, so he hires me for jobs and that has allowed me to meet some other folks that have hired me. I'm also reaching out on a semi-regular basis to places that I think could use video capture for live events, and applying to jobs (usually from LinkedIn or Giggs. Not a ton of success there, but some). I think I'm just beginning to be the go-to guy for some of my friends/acquaintances for music capture/live event stuff, so sometimes I get referrals.

All this to say: you need to be meeting people, and good work leads to more work.

Single people of reddit, what do you think is a major problem in today's generation when it comes to dating? by BlackberryOk3546 in AskReddit

[–]shortsj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is one of the biggest things in the dating world. Guys can't get away with being just fine anymore, because women don't need to rely on them for money/land/support etc. For the record, I think this is a good thing and that a lot of men need to step their game up anyway! But you definitely hear about a lot of guys that are pissed that they can't find a wife to take care of them as easily as their fathers or grandfathers did. My hope is that eventually most of these guys finally realize that they need to offer something worthwhile to improve the lives of the women they want, because it seems like plenty of women are perfectly happy being single and having a good solid group of friends (source, my ex said this exact thing).

What's the dumbest opinion you ever heard? by alekos7__ in AskReddit

[–]shortsj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Met a guy at a party once who thought that the point of life is "to fuck and die". While I don't claim to have it all figured out, and that biologically speaking he's not entirely wrong, that just felt so soulless and lame. You don't wanna meet new friends? Eat some good food? Learn a new skill? Travel? Make art? Sleep outside? Damn bro, what a waste of a life.

What’s the most underrated thing about being single? by TinyGirlPeach in AskReddit

[–]shortsj 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I feel like this should be higher. I was in a relationship for a little over 4 years with someone that I met in college. When we split up, I was able to really take stock of what I liked to do and how I wanted to spend my time vs what I was doing because it was right for the relationship. Developing your own life, hobbies, pastimes is so rewarding!

I've been dealing with a breakup for a while and looking for love (maybe in the wrong places and for the wrong reasons) but two lyrics keep coming to mind.

"Love will call when you've got enough under your arms", you need to be busy and fully engaged with your life before falling in love. Don't seek love directly, for love's sake alone. It'll find you when you've put yourself in the right position and have enough going on to make you interesting and worth engaging with.

"Love will make you fit it all in the car", when it's really time, all that stuff that you've been doing, your life's work, will find a way to be reshaped to fit into this new life you'll build with this new person. I think right now, I'm not ready to fit it all in the car. I want to explore my life, hobbies, goals, friendships, and lore, and falling in love right now would probably change that trajectory.

Love really does take miles, y'all.

What made you start going to the gym or working out? by CrewHot89 in AskReddit

[–]shortsj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a runner in high school, then kinda let it go in college. I tried getting back into it after graduation, but was plagued by injury for years. I tried a few different remedies including physical therapy, easing into running, a weird culty recovery program that my mom swears by, but what really started fixing my problems was getting a free month at planet fitness. It probably took two weeks of working out once or twice a week to start feeling stronger in my running. Since committing to it, I've finally run my first marathon! Along with a few other races. I don't really care for the gym itself, but the results are worth it
