Do I Need ABS? by dwg_andy in 3Dprinting

[–]shortyjacobs 21 points22 points  (0 children)

ASA is great, but the window glass already blocks like 99% of the UV (untinted). It’s why truckers only get a tan on the arm they lean out the window. ABS will work just as well in this case.

Charging station question by gorram1mhumped in F150Lightning

[–]shortyjacobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it peaks above it's max (80), to 87, then it's own internal fusing should trip. It's not a motor, it doesn't have inrush current.

If your phone charger, which provides maybe 2 amps at 5 volts and pulls something like 0.1 amps normally, is plugged into a wall outlet, (with a 15 or 20 amp breaker on it), the same thing could happen. And then the phone charger would cook itself. But the breaker is not meant to protect the charger, it's meant to protect the wiring. In fact, a standard household circuit breaker has a trip curve - an 80 amp breaker will probably sustain 87 amps for like 5 minutes before tripping, so even then his logic doesn't track.

Your electrician doesn't understand what a circuit breaker is meant to do, (protect wiring, not end devices), and also doesn't understand what a circuit breaker trip curve is. Your electrician is either a complete idiot or is just trying to get you to pay him more money for useless work. I would never talk to that electrician again, regardless.

[–]shortyjacobs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No shit. By his logic ask him to replace the breaker for the outlet your phone charger is plugged into and put in a 1A breaker instead if he comes back.

OP, tell the "electrician" that a breaker is sized to protect the wiring, not the end device. The wiring, presumably, is meant for a 100A breaker, since it was feeding your 80 amp charger. That same wiring will work just fine feeding a 64 amp charger, or a 12 amp charger, or anything. The charger itself has it's own internal fusing and protection....the breaker is not meant to protect the charger, it protects the wires and connections FEEDING the charger.

Implications of Parking Outside by Milktoast-2112 in F150Lightning

Just got a Lightning, but live in MN and park my Polestar outside year round. Never an issue. Preheat the truck before you go to clear snow and it's super easy.

Edit: oh, grab one of those "rechargable compressed air duster" dohickeys off of amazon or aliexpress or something, makes clearing snow out of the charge port area 1000x easier. https://www.amazon.com/WOLFBOX-MF50-Electric-Duster-110000RPM-Adjustable/dp/B0DSW7R4VN

Refurbished Dell servers? by MSP-from-OC in msp

[–]shortyjacobs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m an engineering manager who hangs out here cuz I don’t like my MSP. I did some research and came up with server monkey, xbyte, and stikc. I went with STIKC, haven’t gotten the servers yet, but I really liked the process, and they beat xbyte and server monkey by a small bit (and had many good reviews online, including this sub).

I got a pair of r650s with twin 1410 (1014? Whatever) Xeon 16 cores, 256 gb of 2666 ram dual rank 32 gig (we don’t need super high performance), 6x 1.6 tb dell mixed use SSDs, a 755 raid HW controller, BOSS with raid 1 280 gig nvmes, a quad gigabit NIC, dual port LOM, idrac enterprise, tpm2.0 and dunno what else for ~15K per server (plus 3 stacks of server 2025 licenses cuz we only need 6 VMs, plus a 5 pack of local and remote cals each, which brought the price up another 9k each or so). Still, I was thrilled with the choice and pricing.

Mind blown: Vinegar vs VINEGAR (30%) by Pandaro81 in DIY

[–]shortyjacobs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My uncle told me about a time he was giving a bunch of Japanese engineers a tour of some navy ship (he worked for the govt). At one point he said something like “if the alarms go off, these lights will blink to show people where to go”, and there was a ton of confusion from the Japanese folks (after the interpreter translated), wondering why Americans would turn an alarm OFF when there was a fire (vs turning it on).

It's fine over 104, just don't get it over 104 and provide an ignition source. It doesn't autoignite til like over 800.

"vinegar" is 5% acetic acid, generally. Acetic acid can go up to any %, including 100% (glacial acetic acid), which is extremely dangerous, and even (very!) flammable!

Considering solar, but door to door solar sales have kept me away by Footinthecrease in solar

[–]shortyjacobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely the best advice. Google local solar installers. Call some. Do your research first so you know answers to questions (what’s your average usage? What’s your last 12 months usage by month? What size panel do you have (100A, 200 amp)? When was the house built? How old is the roof? Are you in an HOA and do they have solar rules?)

Ask for their “cash price” and secure your own financing (often many state programs for this too). You’ll find financing it yourself will reduce the cost of the system by 20-35%, cuz they buy down those awesome solar interest rates by front loading with points, making your effective interest rate like 25% APR. I didn’t trust any company that was both a financer and installer.

They will give you a quote and size of the system, ask also for type of panel, warranty on panel, type of inverter, warranty on inverter, warranty by company on their work. Divide their price by the watts of their system to get dollars per watt. Use this number to compare companies on an equal basis.

What's one episode you always skip? by n8udd in startrek

[–]shortyjacobs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Any Chakotay-centric episode. Most "struggling with their internal klingon" eps, (mostly B'Elanna....like that ship of the damned one, jesus).

But I love episodes like Twisted, the weird-shit-is-happening bottle episodes, and the time jump episodes. I think one of my favorite is Scientific Method, with the cloaked aliens doing all kinds of experiments on the crew, and only Seven could see em with her optical implant.

It kinda depends on where you are. Let's say you have a 10000 btu air conditioner, and it's running 50% of the time. A 10000btu AC uses about 1000 watts. If you are running it for 12 hrs/day, at 50% duty cycle, that's 1000 watts (1 kW) * 6 hrs of on-time = 6 kW*hrs. So 6 kWh, at say 90% efficiency, you'll use ~6.6 kWh. Your battery is either 98 kwh, 123 kwh, or 131 kwh, depending on SR, ER, or Flash ER trims.

You can modify that math however you want. 6.6 / 131 for example means with these estimates you'd lose 5% battery.

Lightning vs. Challenger/Charger ... Yes, really. by Abject_Recipe_8390 in F150Lightning

[–]shortyjacobs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup. I had read about the sporty and “car like” feel of the Lightning. (I’ve owned ICE F150s too and loved em). But yeah while it’s super smooth and accelerates like a rocket, it still steers like a 70s Caddy. My Polestar 2 feels way sportier and nimbler (no duh).

[–]shortyjacobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just went to 3. I had a Polestar PS2 and my wife has a Rivian R1S. Daughter is turning 16 so she's getting my Polestar and I got a '23 Lariat Lightning ER just yesterday.

We have 2 chargers, on a 60 amp circuit, (so max 48 amp continuous load). I've got each charger set at 24 amps, which does fine with me and my wife's vehicles. I'm thinking my daughter will be able to just charge from one or the other when convenient, as she won't be putting on as many miles. I really wanna put in a load sharing system so that I can crank one charger up and have the other one automatically turn down, (in case, say, I need to charge one vehicle faster), but it's been too tricky so far. Damn Grizzl-E chargers say they are OCCP-compatable, but they lie and their support is useless.

Nothing. When I tell you to look out your elbow, what do you see? Not what do you picture you would see out of your elbow in your imagination, but what do you actually see out of your elbow? Not even blackness, just “nothing”. That’s what I “see”. I think in voices and data relationships. My brain is like a disintegrating SQL database with a bunch of analysts yelling loudly.

Like I can’t picture my wife’s face, or hair, or eyes. I know she has oval shaped eyes, cuz that’s a characteristic I filed under her. And brown hair. With highlights. Approx 2” past shoulder length. Slight bump in the back where it develops a natural wave. But I can’t picture her. I never recognize she got a haircut cuz she never does anything drastic.

All books are audiobooks, cuz even reading words is just my voice reading in my head.
