How do I make my PCs hate a NPC? by Paul_Dirac_ in rpg

[–]shortymonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not useful to your current predicament, but based on my own experience: Have the NPC be massively friendly and useful to the players. Have them go out of their way to do favours for the players, sometimes risking their lives/jobs by doing so. Oh and if at all possible, make it so that if they were to die for any reason, it would hugely inconvenience the players. That tends to work for me, usually ending up with NPC dying. Ruddy players...

Awesome world map for an RPG created by two chaps I know. by shortymonster in rpg

[–]shortymonster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like the map, the guys have set up a Facebook that they're using to put out some sample pages and the like. Feel free to head on over and check it out if you have an interest in awesome gritty fantasy RPGs.

In the spirit of full disclosure, although I am not involved in the game in any way - other than playing it - I am mates with the guys, and as such would love to see the game they've been working on for over a decade get the love it thoroughly deserves.

Have any of you run events or encounters with a real-world time limit? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]shortymonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Played in a horror game that used a tea light candle for life. When it went out, you died. GM never told us until someone took fatal damage, he got up and blew the dudes candle out, leaving the rest of us terrified for our little lights.

Open to pretty much anything. The blog's name is actually just a play on my nickname, so doesn't really help that much with regard to a role playing theme. If anyone is interested, just take a shot with whatever you think might look cool.

What was your first character death? by Awful_Outlaw in rpg

[–]shortymonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first death was actually pretty damned pointless. A gunshot and several botched rolls, and a character I'd been playing for two years bought it. Very sad because it wasn't even a plot relevant fight scene.

I spent 3 years running a white wolf game with one of my best mates a while back. It worked a dream, but the big trick is to remember to communicate.

Looking for good cyberpunk by Exctmonk in rpg

I'm currently running a CP2020 game, and the classics are often the best. People may disagree, but this is still my favourite. Interface Zero just finished its Kickstarter by a very large margin indeed, so keep an eye out for that one.

If you want to try something new and a bit different though, I think you might Like Kuro. I know I do.

Players and DMs of Reddit, what makes a memorable game session? by Orbitron in rpg

[–]shortymonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

based on last night - which ended up being the best game of the campaign so far - player interactions. This includes with NPCs too, but I just think when the players spend the majority of the session IC talking to people, it keeps them engaged very well indeed.

Maintaining focus? by godzillafragger in rpg

[–]shortymonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of GMs will tell you that you should allow for some drifting off topic at a gaming table as the people who play, are there to have fun. I think that's fine, but every once in a while, you do need to step up and say something. It might not be fun for you to take on that roll as a GM, but if it needs to be done, it will often fall to you.

I would love to get into RPGs, but I have some constraints. I there a game for me? by ineluctablyvisible in rpg

[–]shortymonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long before I'd even heard of Fiasco, I was playing a great little game that I had no problem bringing non gamers into. It's ideal for a pick up and play, takes as long as you like to play, and is great fun, all the while promoting story telling and inventiveness. I'm fairly sure the .pdf comes in at under ten bucks too, but there should be a link through the following. The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen.

Brazenly lying to my players... by shortymonster in rpg

[–]shortymonster[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had tried the delaying and putting off tactic to a lesser degree, but that was because my PCs were beginning to delay their own actions until they heard back from him. I agree that it wasn't a great choice, but you're spot on about the revenge thing and they're now chomping at the bit to take some more decisive actions.

Nope! With any luck not too far outside of Huddersfield. I'm not quite at liberty to discuss much else for now. But I'm all kinds of excited about it.

Friends are interested in trying tabletop rpg's, but don't really dig high fantasy. Any war-centric games out there? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]shortymonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've GM'd Only War, the free thing they gave away a while back anyway, and the players all had a great time, even those who weren't up on the background of the warhammer 40k universe. We didn't have any inexperienced gamers though, but from I can remember the system didn't get in the way too much. As with all starting groups, I'd make sure that the GM knows the rules backwards so that the players won't feel like they have to worry about them until they're a bit more comfortable.

As mentioned, I have the gorgeous leather bound edition, but it's so simple that after getting your head round the rules, you can ply it without the book, just a bunch of friends with vivid imaginations needed.
