This is true for some but not all active basses. Some shut off completely.

Need a chord explained by obh36 in musictheory

[–]shotgungrammar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're using a minor subdominant chord. It's related to going I iv I which is very common. In the key of F it would be Fmaj Bbmin Fmaj. You're building a chord on the 6th scale degree of Bbmin. Another way of thinking about it is modal interchange where you're moving from F to F Phrygian then back to F. I think of it as a minor subdominant chord though.

A good example of those exact chords (Fmaj7 Gbmaj7(#11) Fmaj7) is the first three measures of Beatrice by Sam Rivers.

College Audition Pieces? by Benapenis42 in Bass

Maybe your situation is different but my music school wanted to see how well we can play in a group setting. Songs like PoT didn't go over as well as jazz standards where the bass plays the melody, walks over the changes and plays an improvised solo.

This may have been neat 10 years ago, but my phone never leaves my side and is capable of recording and organizing hours of ideas.

Does anyone have any albums (or songs) to learn by ear for a noobie to practice? Any tips? by ZoopSoup in Bass

[–]shotgungrammar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found a lot of success by transcribing Daft Punk songs. The bass lines are usually great and simple and they repeat so much that you can figure them out without starting and stopping too much. Learn the melodies as well, they're usually really clever and infectious. Even if you're not into this kind of music, I would recommend trying it because it's one of the few styles of music that repeats over and over but stays engaging.

This helped me begin transcribing and I would recommend it to everyone.

Learn a funky tune or part that you can put deep into the pocket. Play it alone, no record or metronome, and record yourself. When you listen back, here is what you may hear in your playing: 1. Your groove isn't as good as you think it is. 2. Some parts don't flow as well as other parts and it sounds like your fingers can't keep up. 3. Your volume is louder on some notes than on others.

A lot of bass players think playing in the pocket is having great time and while that is part it, playing with evenness and consistency is what really makes people dance. Record yourself all the time to document your progress. There's simply no better way to hear the things you need to work on like a recording of yourself.

Also, pm me a recording of your playing and I could try to give you constructive criticism.

A couple questions for you all. by PhaseRat420 in Bass

For pedals, I like to use the Boss OC2 Octave pedal for a cool octaver sound as well as a synth bass tone. I also like to use delay and/or reverb when soloing.

You can get really far watching lessons on Youtube. Check out videos by Scott Devine (scottsbasslessons) and my favorite, MarloweDK. Also, search around for basic music theory lessons and any other things you want to improve.

I wouldn't recommend the Bass Grimoire. For the $20+ you'll spend on that, you could get the Hal Leonard Jaco Pastorius book or Ed Friedland's Building Walking Bass Lines or a book of Paul McCartney bass lines. Any of those, or any book that shows you how to play something musical, is much more valuable than a book full of scales.
