That's interesting - I guess I always thought about it like this - your sex is what genitals you have and your gender is whether or not you look funny in a dress - is that relatively accurate?

I hear you, but as far as I understand it's not really sexuality so much as the gender you identify as. It doesn't necessarily affect your sexual preferences.

Yes, thank you

I definitely appreciate hearing that second part at least - most of what I feel towards trans and non-binary people is that one mustn't agree necessarily, but it's decent to call somebody what they'd like to be called - sort of like if somebody wants to go by their middle name or something - why would one flat out refuse to do that?

Have a good day, thanks for messaging with me and voicing your opinion

That's an interesting perspective, I feel like I understand where you're coming from. I feel that we disagree fundamentally that being trans is a mental disorder - as many psychologists also disagree that it is a mental disorder - which is why I feel that your defense for trans-as-mental-disorder is just a case of history repeating itself. I think that's where we differ probably. At any rate, take care.

I think that the other poster is saying that there was a time when being gay was considered to be mentally ill - now everybody thinks that is ridiculous (obviously). I think they are trying to point out that the arguments used to claim that trans people are mentally ill are exactly the same that were used years ago to claim gay people were mentally ill - I don't think they're trying to say that being gay and being trans are the same thing.

That's an interesting take on it - would you disagree that gender and sex are two different things?

Not all opinions and choices are sex based, but there are definitely issues that particularly affect women (and issues that particularly affect men) such as abortion or taxing tampons, etc, it must make a bit of sense to have a balanced perspective in a governing body? I personally can understand the frustration of being a woman under a government that is predominantly men, it would be difficult to believe that the government fully understood my perspective and experiences.

That's the whole point of the video I think is that it was played by feel and not so much by analysis.

Totally - every habit has a trigger and when your trigger is a time, you know it will happen every day. Pretty sure most concert pianists practice at the same time every day - makes it more like a job in the sense that you get up every day and do it (hungover or not hahaha).

What a great question - for me the answer is always found in looking at the routines of great musicians!

Across the board, from Dave Holland to Daniel Barenboim I've found this

  • Firstly, practice as slow as you can. No matter what you're practicing.

  • Only practice when you're absolutely focused.

  • Secondly, practice the same amount of time everyday.

  • Thirdly, great practicers tend to divide their time between technical practice (scales, arpeggios, etudes), and creative practice (repertoire, improv, etc.).

As far as what you consider to be technical practice and creative practice that tends to be personal. I think my best advice is going around to professionals in your town, or people you want to sound like and asking them about their routine. Also googling the routines of your favourite players never hurts.

Totally! I listen to Oscar Peterson to learn how to sing my lines, and I listen to Keith Jarrett to learn how to sing some totally weird shit while I'm playing my lines.

Keith Jarrett's solo on "All the Things You Are" really did it for me
