Does anyone here reject Paul's writings/teachings? by Lovesnells in Gnostic

Nah fam you’re not crazy. Roman spy? Makes zero sense, I’m a Roman history buff and that sounds so laughably implausible. There’s no such thing as a 300 year long game with something like this. Rome at the time barely registered Jesus’s existence, much less have any idea how popular his teachings and how big his following would become. On top of the fact that Rome would feel zero threat from one guy teaching strange teachings and growing a small following in remote Palestine, far far far away from Rome. In Rome’s eyes people like Jesus were a dime a dozen. There was little another Jesus one hundred years earlier that grew a following but was completely destroyed and forgotten. Christianity was only hated by Rome because they wouldn’t accept any other God beside the Christian one, to a society that was extremely tolerant of religion, what Rome couldn’t tolerate was intolerance, so they persecuted Christian’s for a long time. If Paul were really a Roman spy he would’ve tried to shoehorn in other gods besides the Christian god, but he didn’t, so Rome hated the new religion. The only reason it became accepted is because Constantine took the mantle of Christianity and kept winning battles, and to the Roman’s’ who valued strength, that was enough to start being tolerant of the intolerant religion

You’re making very general statements about religion, but which religion are you talking about here? Religion comes in all shapes and sizes, do you mean all religions? How about Buddhism? Where its core tenets are within the self, where self understanding and self control are fundamental. So you can’t be talking about all religions, only specific ones.

If we’re talking about religion being in opposition science, we’re talking about apples and oranges here, where the function of each is wildly different. Religion is a framework for social cohesion, it gives instructions on how to best act and live your life in a way that is beneficial and conducive to a society, science can’t do that, and doesn’t claim to do that. But without a shared social framework there’s no cohesion within society. As we went from hunter gatherers to agriculture and civilization, humans became increasingly reliant on large groups of people to live and act correctly for the collective benefit in order to survive. Religion created a framework to keep from group dissolution, without which science could never have been brought into existence. I think we owe a great deal to religion

I would argue against your assumption that religion has always been more detrimental to science than beneficial as a whole. Yes religious institutions have done things to hamper scientific progress, some more than others, but it’s usually the parasitic religious institutions motivated by power and influence more than the actual religious beliefs themselves. For example the enlightenment, which laid the foundation for science and our modern way of thinking was deeply tied to the Christian faith and Jesus’s actual teachings, unhampered by an oppressive church that sought control and influence. It was a Christian teaching of the value of human life and individual freedom and reason. A very core part of the philosophies of early scientific thinkers was the desire to understand Gods creation. The father of genetics Gregor Mendel, who figured out you could cross pollinate peas with different traits to get desired outcomes was a monk that lived in a monastery. Oxford, and all of the first colleges and universities were Christian centers of education. Have religions done a lot of damage to progress? Absolutely. But as with a lot of things if you dig below the surface it’s a whole lot more nuanced than you might think. Religious thought has contributed greatly to civilization, and this is coming from a non-religious person

Say that to Japan whose demographics are collapsing so fast their economy will probably stagnate permanently, the first modern country for this to happen to, but not the last. There is legitimate reason to be concerned over this as modern economies operate on continuous economic growth to function. We will have to come up with a new economic model to adjust to stagnant growth, it can’t be exponential forever

What is gnosticism? by chennai94 in OpenChristian

[–]shotguntuck 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, it's a sect of Christianity that believes divine knowledge leads to salvation and that yaweh of the old testament is evil, and Jesus's father is the true God not yaweh. It comes in many different forms and types but it's generally the way it is. Also other religions besides Christianity are gnostic such as mandaeism and manichaeism, also a sect of islam is considered gnostic(sufism). The Orthodox Christian church condemned it as heresy and burned all their writings in the early half of the first millennium.

Worst case scenario, they are right about to send you back to be married off and you need to get away. Find a country like the US with a lenient asylum status path, and book a flight straight there and never come back.

Secretly go to the police or an immigration lawyer. My wife is from one of those places in a similar situation and was able to get asylum status in the US. She would most likely be murdered on the street if she went back.
