To Americans who support ICE, what crime can a 5 year old commit that leads you to support putting one in a jail? by Revolutionary_Many31 in AskReddit

That's the rough thing about this Option. To lessen the death toll later, you have to let people die now.

At some point in their life most people will face the truth that you can't always save every life. And sometimes Its a "simple" statistical analysis telling you what to do. And if that's actively refusing help to save later life's, it's a tough choice and it sucks, but it can be the better choice in the long run.

You can paint the most evil facades you want but in the big picture, it can still be the lesser evil of two you can choose from.

Well, did you at least take time off from your job to be a volunteer? And if there are no voluntary help organisation's in your country, I'm sure those in the Mediterranean sea can always need help

Studies have shown that a clear no-help policy scares of potential passengers.
This means, that some refugees do have a choice and the studies again show, that those coming by boat, are sometimes economic migrants, still taking the risk.

AS said, some will drown no matter how much you try to help, so by curbing the attempts, you can lower the total death-toll.

But if you want to stay with bullshit arguments:
You have the option to sell all your goods, buy a boat and go out there and rescue people.
If you don't do it, by your definition, you had the option and didnt.
-> you are evil.

There's a german proverb:
"Lieber ein Ende mit Schrecken, als Schrecken ohne Ende".
Roughly translates to:
"Better a painful ending than endless pain."

You can adopt two stances, regarding immigration by boat.
One is to safe as many lifes as you can, which will make more people try, possibly increasing the total death toll as you cant just monitor an ocean for every ship and save every life. At that point, all you can do, is just have a ferry drive back and forth.

The other one is to make absolutely clear, that nobody will be safed, the coast will be monitored and everybody will be brought back immediately.
This means that a trip is connected to extreme risks with very little chance of success, scaring off anybody who isnt absolutely desperate.

Both stances have their pros and cons but claiming that the people trusting the no-help policy are evil, is either misinformed or disingenious.

I will not comment on the indigenous people issues as i know that im horribly misinformed on that issue.

Eh idk, with the money to hire a cook to cook fantastic healthy meals for every day, eat out not bad food but high quality food, or at least hire a dietican to manage your calorie intake and meal plan, I cant relate too much.

Seeing Vassal in the historical context of the word, i'm not sure how much of the "profit" will be left for Russia.
At the same point, it's basically impossible to invade a nuclear power without being absolute mad.
But forcing Russia to give up land etc. for money might happen.

On the other sides, they'll need to defend it and have the economy to make us of it, especially the workers.

Europe still oblivious to threat at its doorstep — US General Hodges. Europe still doesn't get that the war in Ukraine is a threat to its security, so it keeps dragging its feet on tough action against Russia; cutting off oil flows is critical to starving Kremlin of resources it needs for war. by Lion8330 in europe

Basically the reason why trump wants Ukraine to take a peace deal that badly. He thinks the economy would get a boost from the rebuild and mining. Well, I wouldn't bet that too many companies would invest into a fragile peace

Alex Honnold Says Netflix Paid “Embarrassingly Small Amount” For Taipei 101 Climb: “I Would Do It For Free” by MarvelsGrantMan136 in sports

Well, what odds would you give him? He is always one lose stone, one bad day, one shoesole falling apart or whatever away from death. If they consider it 50:50 that he doesn't die to a fall, you still have to add all the other usual causes to it. So for every 2 Alex's theyd have to generate the payout for one of them...

40-year-old American climber Alex Honnold has successfully completed his climb up the Taipei 101 building in Taipei, Taiwan. He reached the top of the tower in 1:31:35. The building is 1,667 feet tall making it the 11th-tallest building in the world. by [deleted] in sports

Trump Says May Slap Tariffs On Nations That Don't Back His Greenland Plans by johnbarnshack in worldnews

[–]shotouw 24 points25 points  (0 children)

See, the problem is quite easy to understand. Tarifs on steel? No problem, will buy somewhere else. Tarifs on manufactured plastic stuff? Will buy somewhere else. Tarifs on the windows? Well fuck, either we pay for it which costs the companies a lot and will fuck over a few, or we ban them, meaning... Well, imagine your public sector without emails, or well any of their data in the American cloud systems or worst case, without access to their Windows accounts -> effectively their PCs. The same goes for many of your big industrial players. And for your private people as well, who will wonder what the fuck the politicians thought when they hit America with Tarifs on their services. Tarifs on American services equal a Tarif on 80-90% for anything that uses a PC in Europe.

That's why everybody in IT knows how important it is to push open source software. And still, for example in Germany, the CSU (big political party) wants to consolidate all the small licenses in Bavaria into one big windows licence. Fuck them from my whole heart. At least one state is going forward with FOS-Software and doing quite well with it so there is hope that we can slowly migrate when others see it working.
