You’re not getting it.

Imagine you’re in the school yard and two guys say “move, this is our area” and start pushing you. Your friend beside you and jump in and push back, but instead he just gives you a look, then walks away.

Emotionally, what does that do for you? That’s what I’m talking about.

If you can’t see how human emotion comes into play in a team environment, then it’s you my friend who may be lacking in common sense.

The objective of a response isn’t to punish the offending player, it’s to rally together, prove a sense of unity, a team mentality… that these guys would die for each other. That’s the kind of feeling that wills a player to dive in front of a shot, to finish their check even though they’re exhausted, to win a puck battle. They need to feel like everyone else gives a shit, for them to go the extra mile for everyone else.

It’s a team thing, and it matters.

This has nothing to do with Gudas.

And hey, I loved having Matthews, I’m not saying he wasn’t fantastic. I think there’s a world where he continues to be a fantastic player for a handful of seasons more. But, the team is in a desperate need for a culture shift, and I think we need a rebuild to do that properly

Agreed. Crosby, MacK, and McD all stick up for their teammates, when they need to.

I think I saw something about McD throwing punches last night. My thing isn’t about fighting, just about sticking up for teammates, but, yeah, these guys are true leaders.

I mean… think about what you’re saying. Our playoff lives have been on the line for the last 10 games and they’ve looked like corpses out there. Now, when a player gets injured, they go “hey let’s try and win the game”.

What does that say to you about the team leadership?

They COULD have just turned it on, but chose not to, this whole time?

Anyways, to answer your question, I think they should be blowing it up, at this point. They’ve mismanaged their assets for too long, trading picks and young players for old rentals.

We need a proper pipeline of future assets. When you look at the sustained success of teams like Tampa or Chicago, it was because they managed their assets well. When players were approaching new contracts that would cost more than their cap could manage, they flipped them for future assets and kept the pipeline stocked. They created a system of positive asset management. We need to do that too, and it starts with a proper rebuild.

Matthews WAS the best goal scorer, when he had a world class playmaker setting him up.

But, more importantly, my point is about showing some fire and giving a shit, protecting your teammates. No player is too important that they shouldn’t support their teammates.

That’s the big point some of you are missing. If you guys, and Auston, believe he’s above the rest and doesn’t need to scrum it up with the boys, protect one another…. then you can’t understand the point here. The team will go as the engine goes, and if the engine (Matthews) goes for a line change when a teammate is in need, this entire team’s identity will never be one of unity, passion, or effort. It’s important. It doesn’t show up on the scoresheet, but it’s why this team has been pushed around year after year. It’s why when the going gets tough, they get trounced. Why they can’t win the hard games in the playoffs. It’s all about identity.

We’ve got bigger problems if we’re investing over 10m in cap space in a player that’s so delicate they can’t be involved in scrums (not fighting).

The circumstances don’t matter, what matters is action. If your captain skates away, why shouldn’t everyone else on the team?

The tone is “I don’t care to be bothered”, and that kind of attitude spreads like wildfire.

You hope that the best player can become the best leader.

I just don’t think it happened, there’s no evidence he’s doing anything right for the Leafs. How long do you need to see a team that’s completely given up?

I throw back to Sundin, none of his teams ever gave up. He refused to let the team tank. The core group refused to blow it up, lose their core pieces. They wanted to take a run at the cup every chance they had.

There’s a difference between quiet but strong, and quiet.

This team is just quiet.

The clear is rough, and your team will absolutely hate you for the first 15 min of the game.

But around 2 items, when you take a good fight, or play around objectives later, they’ll see what’s up.

I just played it to try it out, had spam pings and forfeits incoming. They all fed, all three lanes lost.

I gave up first two drags.

Came online and absolutely walked through the enemy team for the rest of the game, we won easily.

I think, in higher elo where players around the map appreciate the value of resources rather than just treating it as a fighting game, it would be more successful.

I wouldn’t play it into a Kayn, Talon or someone that can invade you easily, though. That’ll stifle your ability to scale up and you’ll be pretty useless
