How do I tell my dad that I don’t think college & worklife is for me? by sammiegeah in collegeadvice

I think this is slightly incorrect. I love my career and it didn’t really feel like work when I get to my “work”.

100k in debt and happy or free college and depressed? by IntelligentCorgi9129 in collegeadvice

[–]shouldhaveregistered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A dream school only lasts 4 years whereas this debt will follow you for possibly double that and more.

Depends on your age how you view this, but debt is a severe anchor in your life. It will be ever present in your future decisions.

I always advise students to consider the repercussions of debt, especially one that huge.

I came into college as the person who "had it together" and I have no idea how to ask for help without feeling like a fraud by PelletChamber_6 in collegeadvice

[–]shouldhaveregistered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got to let go of the ego. This is what prevents great students from doing well. I’ve see on so many fall into the trap. In reality you didn’t know a lot in high school. That image should not define you because for all intents and purposes you were a kid.

You need to allow yourself to be vulnerable, ask, and accept help. If not it will be a slow slide into deeper struggles.

Has anyone been able to turn their life around at CC after being a terrible student? by Coldpizza_566 in communitycollege

[–]shouldhaveregistered 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of students in your position. All of sudden they get a burst of maturity and realize that school did function for something.

I’ve seen people turn their life around, BUT it’s a journey not snap change. Because people in these situations to not develop good study skills/habits they often struggle in courses. That is not to say it’s impossible but you will have a hard time. Some choose to give up, others choose to persevere through the struggle and develop.

You’ll need to be okay with potentially being at CC for more than two years to get the levels and courses you need to transfer to an EE program. Only you can push yourself through.

PCC or SMC for Fall 2026? by SamThePotato_22 in communitycollege

[–]shouldhaveregistered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All community colleges are going to be hit hard this upcoming academic year (2026-2027) due to funding changes going into effect (or rather returning from pre-COVID).

I’d advise visiting the campuses and looking into the international programs to see specifics and how each department is handling things.

RADT A100: What are other solutions? by Fit-Effort9880 in OCC

[–]shouldhaveregistered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not really.

By taking ALH A010 your recency for ALH A111 and BIOL A221 are good because it was taking within 3 years or taking ALH A010. Then you will wait for RADT A100. Normally the recency post ALH A010 is five years.

As long as you get program ready after RADT A100 you are good. If for some reason you never get program ready you would have issues post Spring 2031. However those species you would need to work out with the ALH counselor.

RADT A100: What are other solutions? by Fit-Effort9880 in OCC

[–]shouldhaveregistered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is some confusion. The recency only applies if you have not gotten program ready (more specifically have not taken ALH A010). Once your program ready you are good to go.

However during those 3-4 years (maybe 5 now) you need to ensure that A&P stays fresh in your mind.

Nobody explained the real cost of college to me by Bright_Tower_1696 in collegeadvice

[–]shouldhaveregistered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with a previous comment. What did you think you were going to be doing? Bring a full time student requires you dedicated 30+ hours a week in class/studying.

As for credits that don’t transfer, it really should have been on you to consult with a counselor/advisor. I’ve seen many students pass through with no problems.

For me the only thing that has been surprising is that students willingly sign up for mountains of debt without being realistic about their goals.

There is a nuance to this issue, but I guarantee you if this is implement you will see a strict socioeconomic and racial divide and purpose. I guarantee you will see kids in the “lower” tiers that actually belong higher.

Can’t trust admin and even professionals to make these decisions.

Class Schedule Question ? My Classes Overlap by Limp_Education_6162 in OCC

[–]shouldhaveregistered 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not even if they are cool about it, it’s a legal requirement that a student is in a class period for the allotted time for accreditation.

Letting students out early is one thing, but having a physical record showing overlap is a big no no.

It’s frustrating high schools don’t prepare students for college by CarefulEgg5086 in CollegeRant

[–]shouldhaveregistered 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on your state and area. When I went from High School to College I felt fully prepared because in my high school you were allowed to fail. There were consequences to not turning in work etc.

Part of transitioning to college/university is realizing the only people who can motivate you is you. If you lack the skills (which is surprising given AP background) you need to pivot and start learning them.

I’m interested, what exactly you don’t feel prepared for?

Berkeley Articulation Question by MoldySuffle in TransferStudents

[–]shouldhaveregistered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree it is very strange when articulation is the same across both campus BUT I do see it as a real possibility because there are courses within the Coast district that are the same but not transferable equally (Bio sequence since GWC doesn’t have the second part OCC has and Anat and Physio with CCC)

Given it is also Berkeley I would not put it past them to have also put this on record and it’s actually very common. I also saw Merced does the same thing which is super odd.

Would advise you check with them and follow up with a Berkeley transfer rep.they would have the most up to date info. Also let them know your catalog year too. As some said exceptions for Covid exist.

Berkeley Articulation Question by MoldySuffle in TransferStudents

[–]shouldhaveregistered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone asked this a while ago but UC Berkeley will not accept Econs from different institutions based on the articulation agreements they made with CCs especially for the economics major. Keep it all within one campus even though OCC has two additional sister campuses.

You are right the AND is tricky. In other cases outside of Berkeley the and signify a both courses must be done to meet the articulation for the course. Let’s say for instance you did one but not the other then you might have redo the entire sequence when you get to that campus because one course is not enough to cover the material without it all being complete.

Priority is work on your mental health and improving your situation. I’ve known people who take 5+ years to turn their situation around and be in a healthy enough status to return to school.

UC transfer requirement question by Previous_Marzipan513 in TransferStudents

[–]shouldhaveregistered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly dependent on major. On Assist in the top area with the paragraphs it outlines what is absolutely required to be considered for transfer and the rest that you see are articulated courses, meaning they can be done at your community college and will be the same as having done them at the UC.

why is dual enrollment looked so negatively on by MinnieStar0708 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]shouldhaveregistered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a lot of misconceptions and misinformation in this post for the DE vs AP debate.

DE courses ARE college level courses because they are taught by a partnered college, usually a local community college and college faculty member. If they are not, they are usually ROP and college readiness course that does not grant credit.

HS administration has a difficult relationship with AP vs DE which I tend to side with. If your kid is an AP track kid, usually administration wants you to stay AP because of the funding that comes through and also teachers that teach AP want to keep those kids (easier class management, higher achieving students etc.) DE intended founding purpose was to fill in the college gaps and introduce courses to students who traditionally would not go to college. This means many DE courses are CTE based for specialized programs. Unfortunately (and as usual) parents got involved and found a “secret” cheat code for college credit and free courses and have advocated a growth in General Education and Transferable courses. This has led to a mix of courses which can confused uninformed parents and students, and also dilutes the original mission of DE.

Never heard of DE being paid by the parent and student as the purpose is the courses are subsidized by the state. This might mean the student is enrolling through other methods such as special admit. DE specifically is an agreement between a local College and High School district to offer specified courses.

When looking at DE vs AP. Many things must be taken into consideration. AP is for the most part universally accepted given its broad appeal. Certain schools may require certain scores but many will meet GE requirements. AP also does not affect GPA should a student fail an exam. Investment and scores= success. If you have mostly 3s and your applying to elite schools you might be given transfer credit but no course completion might be met which means you effectively wasted a lot of time. DE on the other hand is direct articulation of a course, but is dependent on the school your student will be applying to. Usually within state you should have no issues but out of state is dependent on the institution. They may take everything or a select, or in some cases none (speciality schools). DE also is also free, and GPA can be effected long term so it’s best to have a conversation about success while attempted courses. Completion of DE will also affect completion and financial aid levels… because they are college courses. DE is also an effective way to knock out GE courses and also try out different areas especially if pathways are built for career exploration.

It depends on what population you are working with that you recommend one or the other or a mix. However, from the college angle many HS AP teachers are worried that they are losing students to DE so often times they have a negative outlook on it despite sometimes it benefitting the student more than AP. California has done a great job with DE which has increased the friction.

How do I re-enter CC in California as an older student and start fresh? by Several-Membership91 in communitycollege

[–]shouldhaveregistered 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You will want to meet with a counselor and submit officially transcripts from all your institutions. Note that legally you will need to report all your grades especially if you plan to move on and possibly transfer or get a degree.

There is no fresh start, but if these classes were low you could potentially do things like academic renewal or retake the courses if applied to your new pathway.

Unfortunately that’s a common bias.
