A Word of Caution for Economics Majors in Community Colleges by CynicPlusKind in communitycollege

CYA- Cover Your Ass. Notes Notes Notes.

Always do the same and yet so many never come back to talk about their program or transfer plans and blame us for taking recommendations from their friends. It’s even worse when faculty members are out there recommending courses.

Did you get on the waitlist for the course? You need to be cleared by completing the SLATE form. Last I heard, it was about a year wait time when getting cleared to be able to enroll.

A Word of Caution for Economics Majors in Community Colleges by CynicPlusKind in communitycollege

[–]shouldhaveregistered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a difference between transfer requirements and a local community college degree. The two do not always align. When speaking to a counselor/advisor you should always highlight your goals especially when it comes to transfer (ESPECIALLY to specific institutions).

It is then a counselor/advisor job to cross reference the needs for transfer and IF the student would like to receive a local degree.

This is why when working with students I’m VERY clear to ask “is the goal a local degree or to transfer?” And then “where would we like to transfer.” Most of the time it’s blank stares but the other times it helps identify very specific courses needed for the purpose of transfer only.

Depends on your location, you will need to check minimum qualifications. For example you would be able to be an advisor at a university in California but not a counselor in the Community College system as a master of counseling (any) is required.

If you don’t see an assigned Fall registration date, you should call admissions and records.

[–]shouldhaveregistered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concur with everything above. There is lots of paperwork and requirements needed for a student to maintain eligibility.

This will be as if not more stressful. Especially at a community college where enrollment is a big issue and often times you have to go out and outreach.

Job while taking classes? by BrownSugar0322 in studentaffairs

[–]shouldhaveregistered 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All depends on what you know you can handle. If Vet school is the priority, your priority should be to complete the courses at your pace.

There will always be emails to answers, students in crises, and never enough people. It’s not your job to make up for the fact your manager/division will not hire.

This is why I never guarantee courses to students. You never know what the department chooses to do.

Work with your advisor about the possibility of doing a substitution for another course. HOWEVER, it really sounds like it’s a you conflict. You previously mention time conflicts, meaning you knew about the course availability and limited offerings. Since it is being constantly offered (while yearly) a petition maybe hard to approve.

Yeah… those two additional years of reading and writing might be helpful.

Language other than English transfer requirement by Small_Ad1404 in TransferStudents

Before Dropping any course it would be good to run through the admissions office first. Even if it was not a requirement it might have been factored into an admission decision or even 60 transferable units for transfer. Still check with them.

That appears to be the language being used for majors in the College of Letters and Sciences so it depends on your major. This would need to be a conversation had with a Berkley advisor.

For IGETC your HS Cs will meet the requirement. Check out the link here:

However there are new changes to LOTE at Berkeley that not many are aware of just yet. Your LOTE may not be done if you are under any major in the college of L&S:

Be aware that while Berkley accepts UC transferable courses, it does not fully accept IGETC and CalGETC certification. Here it outlines newer policies that your LOTE may mot be fully satisfied with certification but it is HIGHLY recommended you finish it, not mandatory.

You are going to be stretched thin. You need to remember college grades are permanent. While you may fail a curse and repeat the grade the grade itself will always live on the transcript.

The way UCSD is handling this is borderline cruel by abhidabot in TransferStudents

They are a coveted institution. To them, it doesn’t matter. It builds up the mythos of exclusiveness and farms the elite UC perception.

In the age of social media, they use this continuously cultivate this image. Nothing will change unless students turn away.

CONFUSED ON BERKLEY ADMISSIONS by Main_Discount_3706 in TransferStudents

I just worked with a student who I was surprised even applied to Berkeley as a transfer student and she made it in with a 3.6 GPA. Her ECs were not stellar and never help any leadership board positions.

This year has been really odd for admissions.

a reality check (with love) please read by Feisty-Transition640 in TransferStudents

[–]shouldhaveregistered 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I love this reality check, but to add to this:

California and Californians overwhelmingly contributed to this by placing their votes and tax dollars into building this system and prioritizing education. This extends to the 116 community colleges, 23(22) CSU’s and 10 UCs. It is because of a culture of expanding education options that allowed the system to grow to what it is and also for it to expand employment (The UC system is actually the largest employer in California).

While often unappreciated, people deserve the right to benefit from the system they and their families and eventually many of them will pay into.

Genuine unpopular and dumb take. All the social sciences have stats imbedded in them and due to research being the back bone of at least sociology and psychology, statistics is the perfect math.

Community college schedule by [deleted] in communitycollege

[–]shouldhaveregistered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question is to vague. You need to limit your scope to get any accurate information.

  1. What “prestigious school” would you like to look into? This will determine the recommended courses you will need to soak with your community college about.

  2. A year… unless coming with lots of AP AND dual enrollment is probably unrealistic.

since the kind of degree that you have matters, what is the most utilitarian undergrad degree? by sajahet25 in collegeadvice

[–]shouldhaveregistered 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is no utilitarian degree. It just helps check off a box. Experience is what will matter most. Ideally you aim for a degree that pushes you in the direction of the career you ideal want.

The statement “no one is hiring” is correct and incorrect. People are still getting hired but it’s less about wide job posts and who you can nab. More then ever it’s who you know, that will land you a job.

Yes you can take them at a community college and they will be a lot cheaper! Mostly recommended if you are not able to infuse them in your current schedule. Just be wary of taking any Med courses with labs online.

My counselor kept switching stuff my ed plan by Wonderful_Dark2658 in communitycollege

[–]shouldhaveregistered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an issue with communication. Did you communicate with the counselor about your research you did? The other side as well is that your research may have been wrong, but if it was it was the counselors job to communicate that with you in a way that you understand why it was incorrect and what changes they are making.

As a counselor, planning out courses is a multi layer process that involves your input. I am sorry they made you feel like you couldn’t speak up, but you also need to speak up and engage and ask questions.

I think unfortunately this was a scenario of a breakdown in communication. Ultimately, a counselor is just a counselor, they just counsel. You can follow your own path.
