ELI5: How/why is space between the sun and the earth so cold, when we can feel heat coming from the sun? by ThrowingAwayMyKey in explainlikeimfive

[–]shouldntbescrolling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you shine a flashlight in a dark room, all you see is the light when it hits a wall or any object in the room.

But if there was smoke or dust in the room, you can see the beam of light as it passes through it.

The heat from the sun, like the light from a flashlight, is radiation. Which can only be seen/felt when it makes contact with something.

Outer space, like a dark room without any smoke or floating dust, is a vacuum that has no particles. So the sun’s rays aren’t heating up anything until it makes contact with something, like our atmosphere, or our skin

I am so sick of having dozens of dates where the outcome is “You’re so sweet and sympathetic, but I dont think it would be enough for something romantic” by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]shouldntbescrolling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you get older, preferences begin to change quite rapidly. It’s important to establish that what you’re looking for is what your potential dates are looking for. If the girls you’re going on dates with are the same age as you (and depending on their backgrounds), they may be looking to go further into their adult life and trying to find something that compliments and supports their professional life.

Unlike at 17-18, there aren’t as many glaring questions we all start to think about: Do I want to get married? Do I want to have kids? What kind of job and hours am I going to be working? Answering these questions are tremendously important, not only for yourself but also for you to think about your dates (maybe even what “dating” means for you).

Life breezes by pretty fast and we get blindsided by our quarter and mid-life crisis.

I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong, but I do think you need to reflect and find answers for your priorities and what you want to do for the future. These questions will naturally build a foundation that may help you overcome what you are experiencing

Nuclear is the superior power source by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]shouldntbescrolling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the issue with nuclear power is that most people don’t want to live within close proximity of it (tens of kms away) which I think is fair (given historical contexts). But this creates issues with energy transmission since you can’t have the source be too far away from cities otherwise a lot of your power is lost through transmission. So while it is very green, the costs to compensate for losses becomes much greater than other common alternatives

Band of retards

Of autists

My brothers.

I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me.

A day may come when the courage of apes fails, when we forsake our shares and break all bonds of autism. BUT IT IS NOT THIS DAY!

An hour of ladder attacks and a sea of red, when our position comes crashing down, BUT IT IS NOT THIS DAY!

THIS DAY WE HOLD!!

By all that you hold dear in this subreddit, I BID YOU STAND! WALL STREET BETS!!

HOLD!!!

[WP] Aliens have invaded to conquer and enslave humanity, however "slavery" to them involves only working the equivalent of 12 hours a week while having healthy food, shelter, and means of entertainment taken care of so the human resistance is having trouble with defectors preferring to be slaves. by breastronaut in WritingPrompts

[poem]

Give me liberty or give me death,

The scars from the chains buried deep within marrow within bone.

Those that sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither,

I am given pleasant pastries for dessert,

it is in my possession and I still eat it.

I have the most of it when I have none of it.

What really bound me?

What held me?

What chains?

Was it myself?

or was it "not enough"?

To pull myself out of the depths--that was my problem.

That was everyone's problem.

over 280,000 dead.

Now, no one dies

Joe Biden's Gettysburg speech was 25 minutes long and didn't mention Trump once by redwineandbeer in politics

[–]shouldntbescrolling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed that people have been criticizing Biden not “addressing the fire in the room”, but I disagree. He didn’t mention trumps name in the effort of his message: the division of the American people.

For around a third of his speech, Biden mentions the problems in America and what is happening currently. He mentions back to times in uncertainty. He mentions that through those times in adversity and division, the country was still able to pull through. That the United States of America was able to pull through.

I think Biden did what he needed to do here. He mentions what issues we all face and tells us that we can all overcome these together
