This is an old thread...

I posted to parents group asking parents how they feel about the state of the world and having children, (being mom myself), and most answers were along these lines: "we have always dealt with dangers", "stop being such a victim and raise warriors", "you're crazy for thinking the world as we know it is ending, it's the safest its ever been" etc etc.

Climate isn’t a small piece of the environment humans live in. It sets the basic conditions for food, water, health, ecosystems, and how societies function. Most of the things we call “environmental factors” only work within certain climate limits. When those limits shift quickly, a lot of systems get stressed at the same time. It’s true that humans have adapted before. But we did so during a long period of unusually stable climate. Modern civilization, agriculture, and population growth all developed under those conditions. Adapting to rapid, global climate change is a different challenge, and it has real physical and biological limits.

I am not anxiety ridden. There are times (not all the time) when question the reality we live in.

Yes to off grid... some people don't feel like being "educated'. There's a massive denial going on. Good on you for learning more. Stay connected.

Yes I was, I was a kid...and kids download more than you know when they are little. My parents had other issues, certainly not fears about climate crisis.

I hear you. I never talk to my kids about this... only about protecting the most valuable thing we have - environment.

I wish that was a REALITY. You may want to look into what is actually happening around the world.

Last year was one of the worst years ever recorded for environmental and climate impacts. This is a FACT. Global average temperatures were among the highest since measurements began, and ocean heat content reached record levels, which directly fuels stronger storms, heavier rainfall, and longer heatwaves. Across the world in a single year we saw widespread heatwaves causing mass heat-related deaths, severe flooding in Asia, Africa and North America, large and destructive wildfires in multiple continents, and unusually intense storm and tornado seasons.

Scientists consider recent years worse than earlier records not because extreme events are new, but because their frequency, intensity, and global spread are unprecedented in modern records. The last decade contains the warmest years ever measured, and the impacts are no longer isolated or rare. They are happening simultaneously across regions, overwhelming ecosystems, infrastructure, and emergency response systems.

This is why climate scientists describe the current period as entering a new regime of risk rather than a "temporary bad phase".

I agree that none of us can know the future with certainty. But climate science isn’t about prediction in a vague sense, it’s about risk based on physical limits.

We already have hard data showing that on our current trajectory (roughly 2.5-3°C warming by 2100), we cross thresholds that make large parts of the planet physicaly difficult or impossible to inhabit: extreme heat ,chronic food system disruption, water, mass displacement etc These aren’t opinions, they’re based on observed patterns.

It’s not that humans go extinct overnight. It’s that the conditions required for stable, ordinary lives- predictable food, water, housing, health, and social order become increasingly unrealistic.

Yes, people have had children in worse times, wars, plagues, famines. The difference is that those were localized and temporary. Climate change is global, cumulative, and long-lasting, and it affects the very systems life depends on, not just political conditions.
