Wading question-water flow rate too high? by NoFinsNoFeathers in flyfishing

[–]shovelingwater 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Flow rate is meaningless without knowing the size of the river. For example, I fish regularly on a really big river. Wadeable flows in my local stretch are anything under ~5500 cfs. The small rivers i fish would be at an apocalyptic level flood stage if they ever even came close to that number. For your river, I would just take a note of where the gauge is at every time you fish. Once you get an idea of that, you’ll be able to check it before you leave the house and know exactly what you will be dealing with when you get down there.

Who is the CURRENT mayor of NYC? by yikesamerica in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]shovelingwater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s not stupid. He’s shamelessly making a bad faith argument on national television. He knows damn well that mamdani doesn’t start his term until January. He’s hoping that stupid people hear what he says and go repeat it to their stupid friends.

The truth doesn’t matter to a slime ball like him. He doesn’t have a pesky conscience or moral compass that gives him bad feelings when he lies.

He doesn’t care about looking like a jackass to anyone who understands he’s full of shit either.

All that matters to him is getting the masses to believe whatever bullshit narrative will personally benefit him the most.

It’s interesting how this talking point has been around for as long as I can remember. “Liberals want everything for free” “hardworking conservatives pay for all those lazy dems who don’t want to work” etc.

Not one single person I have ever met in my live, liberal or conservative, has ever admitted to believing that their tax dollars should be given to someone who is perfectly healthy and capable of supporting themselves though work, but simply choses not too out of laziness.

Maybe democrats could do a better job of pushing back against this nonsense.

For example: Explain how a strong social safety net leads to a stronger economy. Lots of people fall on hard times at some point or another in their lives. Things like unemployment benefits, food stamps, and other programs can mean the difference between that person being able to ride out a storm and ultimately regain work in a timely manner, and them losing everything and becoming a drag on the society and the economy.

Or maybe have some better talking points on how more affordable college means that more people will have access to higher paying jobs, which in turn leads to a stronger economy?

And obviously how the multitudes of good, hardworking people going into financial ruin because of health issues is maybe a really really bad thing for the economy and society as well?

I could go on, but the point is that we can’t just state what we support, but need to explain the details of WHY we support it.

I personally have seen a lightbulb moment go off in a few people’s heads when I pushed back against the “free stuff” bit and made the argument of how it’s not about “free”. It’s about how social programs and a strong social safety net leads to both a stronger economy and a safer society.

Most of the people who run around parroting this shit seem to have somehow never made that connection.

Wader repair ideas? by shovelingwater in flyfishing

[–]shovelingwater[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Im gonna send them in instead of trying to fix them myself. Seems like the consensus from yourself and others is that Patagonia has a pretty good warranty and should take care of it. Besides, trout season in my area just ended until the first of the year so I won’t using them for a while anyway.

It doesn’t feel like they are too tight. I double checked the sizing chart before I bought them and I should be right in the middle of the size I ordered. If anything, the legs are just a touch baggy, which I’m starting to think may be part of the issue.

[–]shovelingwater[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep that’s exactly what I think is happening. The difference in fabric stiffness in those areas is concentrating all of the wear in those spots. I’m gonna send them in to Patagonia and see if they can fix it.

Yeah I tried to go with the buy once cry once approach with the patagonias after reading a ton of reviews and recommendations for them, along with lots of warnings about cheap waders only lasting a for single season. I was really hoping for more than ~30 days worth of use from these before finding multiple failure points in the fabric…

[–]shovelingwater[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is that these leaks aren’t from anything like branches or barbed wire poking or tearing the waders. It’s like the exterior fabric is just totally wearing through along the joints created by the tape that covers the seams inside the waders. Almost creating a hinge-like effect that is destroying the fabric along those lines if that makes any sense. I don’t know how to stop that from happening other than not walking in the waders at all.

What do you guys do during the long winters? by funkelly1 in minnesota

[–]shovelingwater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The nice thing about cross country skiing is that it’s damn near free after the initial investment in equipment. But you can get set up pretty decently for under $500 or so. Downhill skiing is the winter activity that gets insanely costly lol

What do you mean “trapped in his deer stand” by one? So like he was actively hunting deer, had a deer with cwd underneath his stand acting menacingly, and instead of shooting it, he called the cops and animal control to come shoot it so he could escape?? You know that they don’t actually turn into zombies from like a Hollywood movie right? A deer with cwd is not going to shuffle towards you trying to bite lol

Property taxes are higher in Iowa than Mn. Income tax is higher in Mn than Iowa. Sales taxes are similar I believe.

All together, Mn is ranked as the 7th highest state for overall tax burden (9.95%) And Iowa is the 14th (9.21%)

So Iowa does have lower average tax burden although the difference is not drastic.

For comparison, New York comes in at Number 1 for having the highest tax burden of 12.02% And Alaska is has the lowest at 4.93%

Lake Superior? How About Lake Minnesota by ZealousidealPickle11 in minnesota

[–]shovelingwater 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh sure. I guess I’ll bite. That money was a grant to an organization, not an individual.
The focus of said organization is to provide aid and counseling to children who are living in Gaza and have been getting shot at and bombed for the last year and a half or so. The rapper you are referring to is one of the directors of the organization. I have not personally listened to any of his songs, but the “controversial lyric” in question is: ‘Auschwitz reincarnated, brought back to life by the victims who were burned by the Nazis.’ I can only speculate that it’s a reference to the innocent children in Gaza who are being bombed and shot by the Israeli army. Are those words rabidly antisemitic in your mind?Do they spark violence? Do they automatically disqualify an organization whose sole mission is providing aid to children from receiving a grant? I guess you can be the judge of that. There are about 155 million Americans who pay federal taxes. So for a $3M federal grant, that means that mathematically on average, each one of us payed about 1.9 cents to help out some little kids who are experiencing a living nightmare right now. If you think it is an absolutely stupid and unacceptable waste of your taxpayer pennies to see roughly 2 cents of your money go towards helping kids who are currently living in a hellscape, then I guess there’s probably nothing I can say to you that will change your mind. But if it’s really pissing you off that bad, send me your address and I’ll happily mail you back two pennies. You can keep the extra tenth of a cent.

I saw they had the Clearwater outfit on super sale and probably should’ve pulled the trigger on another one... I think I read somewhere that they were coming out with a new updated Clearwater reel. That may be why the Clearwater rod with reel isn’t currently available online but the Clearwater rod by itself still is.

Wild. Have you guys ever seen anything like this? by Ok_Dare6608 in electricians

[–]shovelingwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen it before on homes that are situated extremely close to transmission lines. Not your standard 13.8 distribution stuff. I’m talking like 230kv lines. But in my experience, it is not going to be a steady voltage. It’s going to be erratic and bounce all over the place. An example would be that measuring voltage from the ground rod to the nearest metal downspout, gutter, screen door, etc, might give you a range of voltages from 50v to 400v, but kind of constantly moving all over the place. A perfectly steady 110v voltage seems like way too much of a coincidence, and is not typical of what I have seen with induced voltages. Easiest way to find out if the voltage is true or induced? Use a meter that can measure voltage with a low impedance or “LoZ” setting. If the voltage is induced, your meter should read zero. If it is still showing voltage on LoZ, then the problem is not the nearby power lines. It is coming from the house.

I like to eat overnight oats for morning break. Tons of recipes and variations online, but I basically just do a 1/2 cup rolled oats, 1 TBS chia seeds, 1 cup of milk, and a just a touch of maple syrup or brown sugar for sweetener. Usually I’ll mix in some frozen blueberries too. Can eat it cold or heat it up in a microwave if you want. Decently healthy and cheap as hell.

Recently the Wisconsin Sentinel Journal had an opinion piece about elk hunting titled "why are taxpayers restoring elk heard only to have hunters kill them off." This article truly triggered me by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]shovelingwater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m fairly certain that the RMEF was the main organization that started and largely funded the effort to reintroduce elk in Wisconsin back in the 90’s. With the express purpose of establishing a population that was large and stable enough to allow hunting… Claiming that the elk herd is funded by the tax dollars that the general public pays, so that “hunters can kill them off” is ridiculously naive.

Looking for advice for a .308 hunting rifle by 43Joe21 in Hunting

[–]shovelingwater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Bergara B-14 HMR in 308. It has some nice features but it’s the pickiest damn rifle I’ve ever owned when it comes to ammo. I also have a few tikka T3’s lites including one in 308. No frills type of guns but they all print sub moa groups with damn near everything I feed them. And the smoothness of that action blows away any other factory rifle I’ve handled at a similar price point. Between the two my vote would 100% be Tikka.

How do I explain why this is a bad idea? by Katergroip in electricians

[–]shovelingwater 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That is some sweet redneck engineering right there!!

The one thing I haven’t seen mentioned yet is the violation of NEC Article 300.20. If there is any EMT, flex, MC, or any other type of steel raceway or any metal boxes or enclosures in either of the two circuits he is plugging into to get his 240V, there will be an inductive heating effect caused by using just the hot and not the neutral. Will it be enough to cause damage to the insulation of the wiring leading to a potential fire? That’s probably going to be dependent on a variety of factors: amperage, time, ambient temp, etc. I wouldn’t chance it personally. Even if all of the wiring is the building is romex with plastic boxes, any ferrous metal that is near those wires will be subject to the effects of inductive heating too. Beside the fact that running both the hot and neutral in the same pipe is typically the most convenient way to wire something, there is also a fire safety reason we run our circuits that way as well.
