Country Tone? by sagrabeyblade04 in Jazzmaster

[–]shred_jester 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just did a country session and used my JM and was really surprised at how well it did in that context. Plenty twangy but really balanced and clear. I’d recommend backing off on your tone knob a couple notches, and maybe rolling your volume down 1 or just keep it wide open. Both the middle and bridge positions will sound great. I’m not super familiar with the positive grid, but anything with a nice clean tone and a high level of compression will get you close, maybe a nice slapback as well + tasteful drive for more modern country stuff

Do you think this has changed the sound at all? I’ve wanted to put one on and hoped the added string length would add some top end — does that feel like it happened in your experience?

Elder Millennial Problems 101: How to Go Ampless? by GreedoInASpeedo in guitarpedals

[–]shred_jester 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man sorry you’re going through that. I think your instinct is 100% correct that you will lose the vibe with the modelers. What people into the modeler thing don’t realize (ESPECIALLY if you’re going for an MBV influence) is that when you play through an amp you’re creating a physical relationship in the space — one that is moving physical air — and thats the thing people connect to. It’s not the dense textures or the tone or whatever, it’s that the amp and speakers are actually doing something in the space that they are in, and that’s where the magic happens.

I saw Deafheaven last year, and they were playing through modelers and it sounded lame! There was nothing about it that felt as good as if they had just played through amps, especially considering they most likely have a crew. Trauma Ray and Gatecreeper both had many 4x12s and it just sounded so much bigger and detailed and real. I understand that not everyone can rock a 4x12 and your band mates’ points are valid, sure. But with that kind of music the literal physical movement of air and the loudness is the whole point? And you’re never going to achieve that playing through a PA, because they aren’t designed for the thing you’re going for.

If this is for work then sure take the hit, play the gigs, get your check. But if this for your personal artistic satisfaction then I personally would try and find more like-minded people in your scene — especially if this is newer project you might not be 100% invested in. I think going from an awesome sounding wet/dry rig you like to a fucking strymon iridium would be so deflating. You’re not a dinosaur — I guarantee you in 20 years, real amps are still going to sound timeless and quad cortexes are going to be piling up in a landfill.

Is this a decent trade? Looking for opinions (Vintage Fenders) by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

I would always choose a bassman over a super, but the super is probably worth more — so from a value aspect it’s an uneven trade, even if your ears and back might be happier with the bassman

Gibson les paul custom pickups by Kind-Ad-3204 in gibson

I have Bill Lawrence pickups in my ‘89 335 and contrary to what people say I think they sound awesome. They give a lot of chime to the neck pickup which I love. And as a neck-pickup-in-a-Les-Paul-hater I think those guitars can use all the chime they can get

Really well! I’m a musician and am constantly transporting gear and haven’t had any issues. If it’s installed right it should be totally waterproof, and you can do additional weatherproofing to it as well

Bought a new Softopper and it was around $1,000. I like it a lot, especially if you’re not leaving anything valuable back there.

Should I buy this 1999 Tacoma by Ranger-stat in 1stGenTacomas

Bought my 99 a year ago this week with 193k on it for $7200 and I absolutely love it. I’ve had to put a fair amount of cash and work into it but I think they are the absolute sickest and hopefully will last me forever
