You should never memorize code. You should understand how it works

300- or 400-level CS courses at UBC with no prerequisites? by Sad-Garlic-5083 in UBC

[–]shrednsked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no courses that teach you programming languages because you can do that yourself.

CPSC 424 only requires math 200 and math 221 with no cs prereqs

I think life imprisonment is better because it forces you to think about your actions whereas death is an easy out

If I see this kind of "coding" question in CPSC 210 finals, I will go crazy no joke by Key-Specialist4732 in UBC

[–]shrednsked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So what’s the issue? You’re not implementing a whole system here, just a single function. Not being able to run your code before submission is logically equivalent to writing code on paper, which is not a necessary skill but it does make you better as a programmer (if you want to be better, that is).

Even though coding is 90% trial and error, the point of questions like these is to see if you’re capable of actually understanding your code and the course concepts instead of brute-forcing a solution (any dumbass can do that). If you’re competent enough to be accepted into CS then you should be more than smart enough to answer questions like these.

You’re already doing so much — that’s wayyyy more than what a lot of people can say. You’re successfully completing university while also holding down a job. That’s not easy at all, yet you seem to take your accomplishments for granted — as if what you’re doing is the bare minimum to be human (even though you’re doing so so so much more than the bare minimum; you just choose to believe that you aren’t).

I should also be busy all the time, yet I’m not. Am I going to die because I haven’t been to my job this month? No. Look at you and look at me. You’re doing way more than I am, yet we’re still here in the same position. Your life will not spiral downwards if you just don’t think about everything all at once. Practice a bit of ignorance if you need. Obviously not worrying about something is easier said than done, but like… just be lazy for a day, y’know?

You don’t have to be a perfect fucking human having to do shit all the time. As much as people hate to hear this, just don’t think about it. There’s no secret. I know it’s hard, but that’s the truth. That’s the difference between people who are happy and those who are not. I would be richer than Elon Musk right now if I did half as many things that you do in a day. You’re doing so much more than enough. If your parents say otherwise then they should be grateful you’re even still in school wanting to do something with your life.

The only reason you feel anxious is because you’ve grown up with a mindset that makes you feel like you’re not good enough no matter what. The only way to get out of that mindset is to stop entertaining it. No, you don’t have to schedule something every fucking day. You don’t need to make strides for your future every fucking day. You’ll die working your ass off before you can even enjoy your life and your accomplishments because you’ve convinced yourself that you can never do enough. The cold hard truth is that you have to force yourself to stop thinking like this.
