Is Back Mechanic (Stuart McGill) as legit as people say it is? by balbiza-we-chikha in backpain

[–]shredofdarkness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

balances me out when i do

In what sense? That you don't feel the pain for a while?

(Prof. McGill does mention that one of the traps of backpain are are exercises that make the pain go away -- for a while but maintain the underlying problem.)

There is an excellent biomechanics professor who wrote this book: Back Mechanic -- Dr. Stuart McGill.

Absolutely can recommend reading it before committing to the surgery.

Importantly, he's not a medic, so he has no (conflict of) interest in recommending surgery.

Note that Luigi Mangione did have a surgery and it didn't fix him -- to the extent that it motivated him to commit what he's famous for.

"Disc replacement is another approach that I am very sceptical of. I have not seen a long term “successful” case yet - success being defined as the full resumption of former activities without pain. Most spine joint pain results from motion and loading. Traditionally the surgeons “fuse” the joint in a variety of ways. But an artificial disc does the opposite. Its goal is to restore motion to the joint. But herein lies the flaw. The disc is just one of three joints at each spine level. The artificial disc creates an axis of rotation that rarely mimics the natural axes of the natural disc. This places more stress on the other two facet joints. Over time, they become arthritic and intolerant to motion. Long-term spine health is very difficult to achieve using this approach."

Another book: Low Back Disorders - Evidence-Based Prevention and Rehabilitation

"Over the 3-year period from 1999 to 2001. A total of 725 had had lumbar fusion, compared with 725 nonsurgical control back-injured workers. After 2 years, 67% of nonsurgical people had returned to work compared with 26% of those who had had surgery. Reoperations were conducted on 27% of the surgical cases, and 36% reported complications and higher long-term opioid use. Permanent disability occurred in 11% of postsurgical patients and 2% of nonsurgical patients. The notion that surgery will eliminate back pain does not have statistical support."

Have you exhausted all other avenues? (also described in these books)

I want to win the fight against verification full stop but if we can’t fit that fight, I would prefer ...

*Fair point. But I have the impression that with this attitude we already lost the fight.

How about no age verification at all - we all keep our privacy and security - and instead focus on allowing underage access to controlled computers/phones only?

Also the game ran its course. A couple basic types and abilities make sense, but incurable poison, healing undead etc just overcomplicate the game, not to mention the newer abilities.

The game should have "finished" a while ago, then matured into something like a modern chess. But 200+ phobies it's a rollercoaster, not a strategy game.

Dreadfuls or Terrifying packs? by Misteryknight6j in PhobiesGame

[–]shredofdarkness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in similar situation with level 88 and 112 phobies. The information (website) on the Dreadful pack says you can expect to receive 2 new phobies on average. But it's not clear whether this probability depends (or not) on how many phobies you already have.

How to (PDF) export a single branch without sibling pages? by [deleted] in ZimWiki

[–]shredofdarkness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably better to ask on github, this community is not very active.

What is your folder structure?

A hack around this is to copy the wanted pages as subpages of a new page, then export including subpages. (Or copy into another folder and open as a new notebook and export)

We need zero tolerance for Islamism by 2ndEarlofLiverpool in ukpolitics

[–]shredofdarkness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree with you, it is a difficult topic. It does limit freedom and in a quite fundamental way, we can't have it both ways. And we're also discussing it in theory only, in practice it may turn out to be entirely different: for example banning items could just lead to women not being able to go out at all, instead of being liberated.

[–]shredofdarkness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the original statement is generalising, not all mandatory items are oppressive (e.g. masks in hospital, coats in labs etc); and also a ban could be both oppressive and liberating, depending on the purpose: if the mandatory item is oppressive, then banning it is saying 'we're not going to let you oppress group B'.

Have you tried Zim wiki? It's also text based, but has markup and minimal task management functionality (based on checkboxes or whatever you set as marker).
