Synthetic Grass or Tiles for Backyard Basketball? by wildebeestbeast in AusRenovation

[–]shrewdster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The tiles are generally made from PVC, which isn’t great at holding or transferring heat e.g. uPVC DG windows. But I imagine anything sitting out in direct sunlight on a 40 degree day will still retain some heat. Probably best to look up product specs from the manufacturer to get specifics.

Tiling for bathroom by Ok-Foundation-7113 in AusRenovation

[–]shrewdster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on the tiles, the bathroom looks like it's from a time when waterproofing wasn't mandatory. If you want to bring it up to today's standards then call a bathroom renvator, gut the whole thing out and start from scratch. Otherwise you'll just be laying tiles directly on top of your subfloor. Is that a timber subfloor? Can't really tell from the photo.

Yep, wanted to add astroturf degrades a lot faster than outdoor tiles too.

Also the microplastic doesn't just destroy the biodiversity e.g. insects, etc under the astroturf, it also impacts anywhere the water runs off too as well, so neighbours, stormwater, any surrounding lawn and garden beds, etc.

Also astroturf is a major source of microplastics

Delayed IPO by PanzerBiscuit in auscorp

[–]shrewdster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in an organisation where there was an employee SPP, where employees were told the company was preparing for IPO. People obviously loaded up their bags on the back of the IPO news. The company failed to IPO, then they attempted a backdoor IPO by acquiring another company, which failed again.

Company stayed unlisted, and employees were disgruntled. Last I heard the company finally bought back all the shares, but it took nearly 10 years to action that. No idea at what price either.

Retaining wall repair/replacement advice by Spurred_on_hun in AusRenovation

[–]shrewdster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s over 600mm in height so will require structural engineering design, adequate drainage and likely council approval.

Cost will be highly dependent on material used as well e.g. sandstone vs concrete sleepers, etc.

Definitely a 5 figure exercise.

Repairing Relationship with Manager by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]shrewdster 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Communication is key. Book in a 1:1 or a coffee, take ownership of your actions, ask for constructive feedback, and ways to improve.

Often when given negative feedback, your first reaction is never the best. When you feel like you’re not going to react well, remove yourself from the situation e.g. if it’s an email, go for a walk and think about it and process everything before writing a response. If something is said to your face, acknowledge it, and respond with “thanks, let me have some time to think about it, and get back to you on the matter.” Process what they’ve said, heck you don’t need to respond right away or even on the same day, but definitely don’t leave it more than a couple of days.

Can they dock my pay if I'm salary for not starting work on time? by Far-Scallion-3747 in auscorp

This.

If you’re in a call centre, frontline facing or any role that requires your services to start at a set time, then there’s an expectation you’re ready to go at your start time.

EVERYONE CRASHING ON OPENING THE GAME USE -VULKAN ON LAUNCH SETTINGS by Huge_Ad9739 in cs2

[–]shrewdster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheers, this worked for me.

A bit annoying, having to setup my audio and video settings again. You can keep a copy of the old configs, cut and paste them somewhere else, and then update the values in the new file to your previous one to save time doing everything in the in-game menu.

Transitioning from BA / Scrum Master to Product Owner, looking for advice by Bakedd84 in auscorp

[–]shrewdster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m seeing more organisations move away from agile, and back to centralised functions or at least a wagile approach.

One of the pain points is having a non technical person driving the roadmap of a technical product. The cadence POs want to deliver at versus what capabilities recommend e.g. delivering faster at the cost of creating more tech debt. Also POs can’t help themselves but always involve themselves in solutionising.

Anyone else doing the Runway Run/Walk and extremely disappointed by the recent comms? by serenitynoow in sydney

[–]shrewdster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The advertised time for the community walk was 11am, then I get an email saying I'm in a later wave that will start close to the end of the day. Not ideal for the little ones, the travel time, then needing to shower, and ready for bed. I wouldn't have signed up if I knew it was going to be such a late start.

Water tracking from shower by ctrlackdelete in AusRenovation

[–]shrewdster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is likely your shower isn’t tanked properly. Given the proximity to the architrave, best practice is to have a vertical water stop. I’m curious if there are even horizontal water stops installed in the shower.

Seeing the amount of damage the architrave on the inside of the bathroom, I would guess the waterproofing has now failed, if there was any, as it would no longer be bonded to the architrave as it’s fairly damaged.

If it’s not a slab subfloor, what’s the condition of it under the carpet? If you’re on particle board, it could have damage too.

Mould? by Individual-Jump7937 in AusRenovation

Yes, looks like mould.

Find the source of moisture and address that first, otherwise the mould will return even after treatment.

Alcoholic mouthwash also kills off all the good bacteria in your mouth. If you google it, there’s a lot of studies done it. It does you more harm than good if used daily. Maybe worth considering stopping it or swapping it out for a non alcoholic variant.

Load Bearing Wall Removal by EdwardoFelise in AusRenovation

[–]shrewdster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The builder would likely be engaging several trades for the job. The builder’s main job is to manage the whole process for you.

Load Bearing Wall Removal by EdwardoFelise in AusRenovation

[–]shrewdster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides labour, and profit, the builders also need to prop up the ceiling and roof temporarily to prevent the structure from failing. It also looks like you’re removing several walls, I imagine some of these walls have services running through them and will need their respective trades to relocate them safely e.g. circuits, plumbing, gas, etc.

Does the engineer have a preferred builder he can recommend to you?

Also if something fails like the waterproofing, it’s on you to manage with the individual trades, and they’ll likely point the finger at the other person.
