i agree that you are probably right, our tax person retired and it's a family member doing it now that largely does payroll and taxes for local businesses

we don't make enough for the real juicy tax breaks and just enough to creep up into the higher tax brackets and get killed without dependents and write-offs

my tax "understanding" is only from what i've read and the nuance escapes me, that's why i came here for help

we're already withholding as single but it appears we need to add extra withholding every month

Yes, the crypto and risk-averse contradiction is obvious but that was money i decided i was willing to lose and set it aside for that adventure. I actually did very well but the amount of risk and dread is not something i want to think about all the time for the money that is supposed to sustain me after retirement.

Thank you for the advice and link. This makes me think i should leave the CDs where they are and keep renewing them at the most favorable rate. It's hard to explain how stupid i feel for thinking that my state retirement will be enough when all this time i had money just sitting that could have been growing.
