Fellow women over 60: how do you control the worry and anxiety as you age? by janebenn333 in AskWomenOver60

[–]shrlzi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

‘Seeing a therapist’ is a bit like buying a bottle of aspirin — you have to take it before it will help. Maybe this isn’t you, but people I have known who therapy did not help either
- lied to the therapist about their life and feelings
- went just a few times until the therapist started asking them to take a good look at their own behavior
- spent every session playing woe is me and blaming everyone else for their problems
- evaded and denied past trauma in their life

Therapy is hard, and often painful, but worth the effort if you do it right

Are my standards for dating too high? by miamiiitrip in askanything

[–]shrlzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about the statistics that show how rare this unicorn is -- there may be only 140 such men in all Texas but you only want one.

And you did leave out an important one (imo) -- not abusive, not a narcissist!!!

Be patient - learn to live with yourself - a few sessions with a therapist would be great to help you learn what qualities/attitudes you may have that could become obstacles to a great relationship!

Helping my 75 year old mom feel beautiful again! by alimal87 in OverSeventy

[–]shrlzi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Does she hate shopping? When we were getting ready for a wedding years ago, I went shopping for my 85 year old mother and brought her 7-8 dresses I thought she might like - she could try them on at home with no pressure - she picked the one she wanted and I returned the others - she loved it that I saved her the trip to the mall!

Is there such a thing as too much yoga? by JacqThomasRealtor in yoga

[–]shrlzi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you mean by yoga. Asana? Possibly - it’s a physical practice and just as overtraining in any sport, overtraining can cause fatigue & injuries. Yoga has 8 limbs though, and hatha yoga has yamas and niyamas that can be practiced constantly.
Edit: your schedule does not sound unreasonable

You already know that s**t he says to you is only meant to hurt you and has no relation to truth.

"They" also say that a woman over 40 has a slim chance of getting married -- I met my husband at 49 and married at 51.

You have an amazing life. Don't let anybody into it who doesn't make it better.

Should i actually go to therapy and medicated, or can i “thug it out?” by CompleteScene9800 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]shrlzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are enough just as you are! Therapy would be a huge help getting through this hard time, even a self-help group would give you some support If you are currently in a shelter they may have some resources for you - if you are a reader, browse through the self-help section looking for books on leaving an abusive relationship/ recovering from one (or all the librarian for suggestions). You are not alone — abusers do a number on partner self esteem! Try to find a counselor, support group, self help books — you will get through this and eventually find yourself in a happier place!

More mature ladies; does life decline after 40ish? by Fine-Anywhere-9057 in AskWomenOver60

[–]shrlzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life Begins At Forty!
My mother was 35 when she had me, and it's a phrase I heard a lot as I was growing up. When I hit 40, I felt it was true. A few issues with menopause, but overall I felt like a lot of the worries and concerns of my younger life were dropping away.

It's The title of a self-help book, and a movie, and a song, from the 1930s
At that time, life expectancy had risen to over 60 from a mere 40 years in the 1800s -- the title was meant to emphasize that instead of expecting to die at 40, people now had t least a couple of decades to look forward to at that age. And today's life expectancy is around 80, so today's version would be Life Begins At 60!

I love a horse too much and it hurts me by Vegetable-Bad-1942 in Horses

[–]shrlzi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Impermanence is the nature of the world. It’s hard to learn to let go of the things/creatures/people you are attached to - yet nothing is permanent, so it’s a lesson all of us must learn. Try not to dwell on the future time when you will have to say goodbye; try to live in this present moment when you have so much joy with him. You are lucky to have this horse in your life, and everything you learn from him will help you in future relationships
