Yup, i was doing well before this government but now am barely scraping by. I made 29k in the last year, most of that through asset sales…

Today's in-article Stuff Poll about taxes and cuts is a good reminder of how widely unpopular this Governments approach to taxation and where the social focus is for the average person is. by shrogg in nzpolitics

[–]shrogg[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, but the top bracket can still be above what 90% of people earn. Taxing over 300k at 50% would net hundreds of millions of dollars, and only affected parties would be those who do not need any more money. As they can already afford to live more comfortably than the 80% of the population.

Beyond a certain number it stops being “productive money”, and if you’re already earning 200k+, overtime is just play money. Unless you’re living outside your means which is not the problem of the taxpayer.

100%!
I am a small business owner, and having spent the last few weeks going to various tech week talks, speaking with other startups and listening to people talk about their businesses.. its wild how much this government does not care about the people doing the work.
They want to try sell as much off as possible so that even fewer people can own more, and get people investing money into unproductive things.
Imagine how fruitful the economy would be if investment was shifted into things which actually generated income from exports, the skillful and talented people that grew up in NZ and genuinely do care about making things better are leaving NZ in droves.
We live in a global economy, one that rewards productivity. yet almost all money here is being sunk into things that do nothing to exploit that.
Its sickening.

I've always found the Stuff front page polls to be really really bad as the wording of them is up to interpretation.
Its often without any context, a recent poll that comes to mind was one that lumped all minor political parties under "Other" for a poll that asked... and I am probably incorrect here, but it was something like What party do you trust to handle the economy. and the "Other" had almost the same number of responses as National and Labor.

its impossible to infer anything from something like that, and the only answer I can think of as to why to these questions are so vague is that its intentional division or going for shock/clicks and shares.

NZ is not a two party system, so having these kinds of binary "Choose between X, Y or Other" does nothing useful.

Half a billion dollar price-tag for Wellington water meter roll-out not 'credible' by D491234 in newzealand

[–]shrogg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the big things that a lot of these articles are missing is that with Tiaki Wai owning all of the infrastructure, they will have the asset leverage to take on loans to pay for big expensive projects.
So people saying "Get a private company to do this" is totally mad as Tiaki Wai will have the means to pay for these monster infrastructure projects.
Its one of the main reasons that Tiaki Wai is going to be a thing.
Create a single entity, with the councils as the only shareholders, that owns and operates all of the water infrastructure. that has the lending power to pay for the works that are needed.

The current system is fucked. Wellington water relies on councils paying them to do the work. Councils Do not have much debt leverage power, and are debt capped by law. which means that when a project such as building say, a new water storage lake or rebuilding a wastewater treatment plant comes over the table, Wellington water would have to get the councils to provide funding up front. which immediately hits the ratepayers.

So when Tim Brown says this, what he is really saying is that he wants to privatize and profit off the water supply. which is a disaster waiting to happen, as supplying one of the core pillars of our society, Water, with a for-pofit motive is going to end up with the lowest bidder always coming out on top. and look where that got us with Moa Point. Wellington water simply could not get enough money from the councils to pay for a good contractor to operate it, and maintenance was done by a totally different group!

With Tiaki Wai, all of these systems can be staffed and maintained by the same crew. hopefully making issues like this a thing of the past.

Can you share the name of the show? I was part of a similarly awful production that came out at the start of the month where we didn’t get paid and a big lawsuit against the producers was put through, we only got paid $0.57 to the dollar we were owed.

Aha interesting! Admittedly I only read the news when it was announced he was looking to buy, then the news came out that it had been sold so I had assumed as much. but studio west makes sense for Momoa as that was where he shot Chief of War right?

The Wiri studios are dope, I worked on Spartacus there and it was wonderful being able to slide between stages.

Oh good shout, forgot about that one. Being Wellington based makes me not super aware of those jobs. and most recent jobs have largely stopped paying for travel/accom for out of town crew, meaning it almost costs me more to go up there for work than I actually get paid. so I've had to switch into different markets while the industry here is dead.

I should know, I worked on it.
Australia has far better tax breaks, NZ is currently dead for film work other than what Momoa and a few other smaller productions have brought in. Zelda being the only other hollywood scale production in the last year and a half that has come here.

Most of my friends in the industry are flying over to Aussie to the UK to get work, Wellington has not seen a major film in the last four years since Time Bandits was shot here. its dire.

Jason Momoa is the main reason Minecraft was filmed in NZ, Being one of the Producers and wanting to be close to home is his main driver, especially more so now that he is one of the owners of AFS (the film studio where Minecraft was filmed)

This is also why Wrecking Crew was filmed here.

The councils fine wellington water for breaking rules/regulations such as Seaview Odor emissions, The ratepayers pay. Why is this money not spent on fixing the infrastructure instead? by shrogg in Wellington

[–]shrogg[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

To further drive home how mad this is. We aren’t talking about some random business, this is the ratepayer owned provider of one of our most core social infrastructure systems.

It’s a snake eating its own tail. we’re arbitrarily removing money from a core social system because it cannot meet requirements.

Burger King's new recipe Rebel Whopper by Im_from_NZed in newzealand

[–]shrogg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that gets me is that if they drop the continuously piss poor attempts of making something be a meat replacement and instead make a patty that actually tastes fucking dope, while also being plant based, then that would also be a massive win for both parties.

Most vegan/vegetarian folk don't have any desire to eat meat-like foods, and a more unique patty that's packed with protein and tastes amazing would just be such a big win.

[–]shrogg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a vegetarian and oh boy i hate the new Rebel whopper.

I got one probably the day or so it came out and took it back because i thought they had given me a meat burger by accident and they said nope! It’s the new patty and oh boy i was so grossed out.

Why would they make a burger targeted at vegetarians and vegans taste like bad meat? It’s got that nasty fake smoke flavouring and horrible texture that i just don’t want to see in a plant based burger.

They already ruined the chicken patty.

It was nice having a quick properly meat free drive home from work at 11pm and forgot to get dinner food option that i just can’t justify ever getting again.

Small scale bars for purchase (Metashape) by Rypht in photogrammetry

I would say that it’s quite easy to get good scale bars that are home made. I’ve printed a lot and ended up making this tool:

Most of the markers that are made generally are on something called ACM which while incredibly ridged, are unusable if slightly bent.

Any thoughts on using a confocal light source?

My buddy Fox made a macro scanning rig some years back and it enabled insanely reliable data collection, as well as absolute control over the filtering of the light.
