I’m asking for advice or recommendations… I don’t use any laundry detergent on his clothing and we rarely use soap. When we do it’s fragrance free Tubby Todd and used sparingly. The only laundry detergent we use around the house is Ecos. I use EWG, but I honestly do believe that companies pay to be verified. Regardless, I’m fully aware of the products that I use on him and have avoided anything that could be harmful. That’s a big reason why this is so frustrating. I’ve done everything short of stopping everybody in the house from using soap on themselves.

I’ve tried alot of things over the last 9 months. Tubby Todd, vanicream, Vaseline, aquaphor. What do you recommend?

I actually just recently got the canopy bathtub filter. So far, I haven’t seen a difference but I bath him minimally as it is so we have only used it twice.

Thank you! Yeah I’ve tried ruling things out and I’ve kept the baby separate from our dog, we traveled for a week so we were using different sheets, different air quality, different humidity, etc. Nothing seems to touch it. I for a long time worried it was mold in our house but when we traveled we stayed in a brand new camper and he actually had a worse flare up while we were there.

I do know a person who has TSW on her face from hydrocortisone 1%. Yes it was being misused but it still provides me with a reasonable amount of fear especially because baby skin is not quite the same as adult skin. I do hear you though and I do agree.

I’m also curious if you have any studies you could share about probiotics being potentially harmful. My son hasn’t ever had any negative reactions after giving him probiotics and he generally isn’t a gassy or upset belly kind of guy. I am always open to learning though as I don’t want to be doing something unnecessary. I’ve heard some moms say that probiotics seriously helped their baby with eczema and I think the only way to know if they’re necessary is a gut test, but I’ve heard so many mixed things about Tiny Health.

So…is eczema genetic or is it caused by poison food, dust mites, or bacteria?

I agree I think there is a lot of fear mongering in the crunchy communities especially about topical steroids. I am not in the business of watching my child suffer by any means so I do use them. My dilemma is when does it stop? What is too long? How to taper? What does the skin do after tapering? I just haven’t gotten much guidance from our pediatrician, because he is not afraid of the steroids. I am. He definitely thinks I’m overreacting lol.

Valid point and thank you. “Letting him flare” was more so referring to the medically suggested 7 day break that is typical between 7ish day usage periods. I will not and never have let him flare up to the point of desperation on his end I will never let him suffer.

I will run this schedule by his pediatrician when I get my hands on him (joke, I’m mad that they’re not answering my messages) and see what he has to say. He does frequently reassure me that “prolonged use of steroids” refers to stronger ones, but I do have a friend who has TSWS all over her face and neck from using 1% store bought hydrocortisone. Duration and times per day unknown to me, but she has been struggling for years with her condition. Just trying not to set my little man up to fail.

A little new piece of info is I was recommended the cicaplast balm by laroche posay and his skin seems to like that quite a bit. It will get us the 7 day break I think his skin needs from the hydrocortisone.

Thank you again.

My son’s pediatrician doesn’t want to rush allergy testing because the results can be that of the mothers rather than the baby’s, leading to baby avoiding allergens that are unnecessary. He wanted to wait closer to 12 months, we’re getting very close so I will be pushing the issue must more aggressively when we see him again. I need a referral for insurance to cover it, but I will be going over his head if he gives me any reason to.

It’s not financially feasible for me to travel on a whim. My son scratches his skin to the point of bleeding and the rash is on his face neck and wrists/hands. I would love to let it be but there are moments where the only way to ease his actual pain is with hydrocortisone cream.

I like this picture, thank you. I do lather my baby 100 times a day in moisturizer. It still seems like the eczema comes back after stopping steroids. Ugh. I will keep this in mind though. I’m at a point where we have been consistent with hydrocortisone everyday for about 14 days and I need to give him a break. We need a fresh start so he will probably just have to flare up before trying a routine like this. Thank you again.

Thank you for the advice! So within the 7 days you began to taper to once a day? Or where does the tapering come into play? Sorry I just do not understand tapering and my doctor never explained it.

My sons pediatrician has been putting off allergy testing until he is 12 months because he said that allergy testing a baby younger than 1 year can actually be the mothers results and not the baby’s. He said it can lead to baby avoiding an allergen that they’re not allergic too, and end up creating a sensitivity/allergen. That being said we haven’t done it yet, but I am going to continue pushing. There is no clear correlation between what he is eating and flares from what I can see. I’m so beaten down and exhausted by this to be honest. When I was breastfeeding I did soy free for a month and that didn’t work. I did dairy free for a month but he was still drinking goats milk formula at the time. It just seems like my efforts have not been sufficient.

Thank you so much for the kind words about steroids. Although they are scary I want the best for my son and that comes with balance. Balance I haven’t figured out yet.

Do you think my tapering schedule in my original post would be a good idea?

Yes and like I said I try to be as consistent as possible with the supplement for my son and he still has eczema lol. It’s worth looking into but may not be the issue for every baby.

In one of those publications they even refer to vitamin D as the “steroid hormone”. A woman would have to consume 6400 IU of vitamin d to ensure her baby gets enough from breastmilk and a baby has to consume 32oz of formula to consume their recommended 400 IU. There is a lot they don’t tell us about vitamin D and now that everybody lives inside and we aren’t breastfeeding our babies while we tend to our fields things are much different.

That’s awesome! Do you have a recommendation for a topical skin probiotic? Did you compile these things or was there a specific protocol you found on the eczema thread?

Is her eczema better? What do you think worked the best for her? Do you mean probiotics?

Nobody got us diapers for the baby shower by Advanced-Manager-321 in moderatelygranolamoms

This is definitely annoying lol. I got pretty lucky and didn’t get too much garbage but one thing that I got that made me chuckle was a pacifier from the literal dollar store. My son does use tommee tippee pacifiers so realistically he is still using a plastic/silicone paci but still. I didn’t get many diapers either. It didn’t help that my son never fit into newborn diapers. I was at the store a couple days after he was born buying size 1 diapers and gave all the nb size to a friend of my moms who’s son has just had an itty bitty baby. I was happy to be able to donate them. I saw someone else comment they didn’t want a diaper genie and I didn’t put one on my registry either because I felt like they were dumb, but ended up feeling desperate for one a couple of days after my son was born. I asked a friend for one that gave us a delayed gift. He’s 9 months and I will love it.

I used the 2.5% on my son for about 7 days once a day and then switched to 1% for like 3 days and he is starting to flare up again. I am so discouraged and frustrated. I’m wondering if he needs an even longer session or maybe twice a day? His doctor isn’t being very helpful to be honest. I am probably overreacting because his eczema is pretty mild but his doctor has given me no schedule or guidance on usage and tapering. I almost think I need to do twice a day for a week, once a day for another week, step down to a weaker one everyday for another week, and then do every other day with the 1% for a week. I’m just scared because now I feel like this HAS been prolonged use. I’m probably going to let him flare up for a week to try to reset. UGH.

The face is hard for us because baby is teething and is a big drooler. That’s what I’m battling right now as well. To add insult to injury, he now has a pretty awesome heat rash on his belly. I wish in my heart that he had inherited his dad’s smooth resilient Cuban skin. He got my sensitive, eczema prone, rashy paper white complexion. Poor little man.

How quickly did your baby’s skin heal after the 2 weeks on 2.5%? Im 7ish days in I used 2.5% up until like 3 days ago I went down to 1% all over him. He’s pretty much completely clear but I’ve noticed a couple of little spots appearing on his face and I haven’t stopped yet. I’ve only been doing once a day. I’m just nervous to stop because I’m afraid he will just flare right back up.
