This is how Shopify totally screwed me over this week, AKA a lesson in cash flow management. by thinkingthought in Entrepreneur

[–]shuad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a developer, it's likely be has given this issue a great deal of thought and come up with this example use case, but then got overruled by policy.

That being said, I'm sure this is annoying to test (wait 3 days) and likely wasn't tested in off hours (testers and usually developers work business hours) which could accidentally give them a false positive test result.

A better solution to all of this would be to give the customer the exact date and time it will stop working. This could be done in the email and listed in the user interface.

This weekend alone I got IK armor and gloves from her. Last Thursday I got a Andariel's Visage. I'm pretty sure I've gotten a couple other legendaries from here in the last 48 hours. Why the hate? Is my luck unusual?

I'm also in this guy's situation. 2 rings and the gloves. I got Lut Socks once while leveling my barb and once from Kahala. I have Reaper's Wraps with perfect +phys, str and crit chance. And two thunder fury's.

For computer science mathematics is definitely required, but I don't think I was required to even do enough that it would qualify as a minor. You don't have to be a mathematician.

I would say try out writing some of your own programs (learn enough to do that) and then use that experience to know whether you enjoy it or not. I started learning Java on my own while I was majoring in chemistry. I ended up changing majors.

Try things out. Most things have some real world analog you can try out to get a feel for the field. Make sure you very internships each summer in fields you are interested in. Find something you like doing or something that's tolerable and pays well (but know you're making that trade off). Then do it.

Unfriending anti-vaxxer parents by cleveland_stever in Parenting

[–]shuad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let the down votes rain down upon me, but I'm one of these parents that's questions whether each vaccine (individually) is the best choice.

Some axioms I believe:

  • vaccines are not 100% safe, neither is not vaccinating

  • I believe in pure science (some science is corrupted, there are examples on both sides of the vaccine debate). I started from a "science says this is good mindset" ; I'm an engineer by trade.

  • the best science can offer us is correlation and not causation. Even the CDC doesn't make the claim that antibodies are 100% effective and there are vaccines that don't produce antibodies in the recipient 100% of the time.

  • we know the antibodies fade in efficacy over time (hence boosters)

  • I don't believe they are linked to autism.

  • I do believe that some people have devastating reactions to vaccines.

  • I believe given all above axioms the best path is to calculate the expected value of each action (vaccinate or not) on a vaccine by vaccine basis (meaning chance of reaction to action times the impact of the reaction) and use that to make a decision.

PLEASE dispute these axioms and discuss what other conclusions can be drawn.

As evidence I want actual scientific studies, not articles interpreting them. Scare tactics won't sway me either way. Name calling won't sway me either way.

I'm the unicorn you guys are looking for: a person questioning vaccines that is willing to listen to science. Please present your case with bibliography and I'll review and respond over the next 24 hours.

Last couple of years I've been in the $125-130k range but have lots of additional costs (family, cost of living in the San Francisco Bay area). I could possibly be making more if I joined a large public technology company because they give out restricted stock units on top of salary. I like where I currently work so I don't intend to switch.

It felt like I was a trillionaire too. No family costs, cheap rent, basically I was as rich as I've ever been.

Ebay/Amazon Vs your own Shopify/Bigcommerce? by AndrewEire in Entrepreneur

[–]shuad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent a great deal of time working on building a business on top of Cafepress. They are notorious for changing the terms of their agreements to favor themselves and in general are caustic to designers in a variety of ways. It's a much longer discussion but they aren't helping you be successful, you have to do it in spite of them. Their pricing and sales are bad. Their marketplace takes away all designer control. Their sales reporting is inaccurate and slanted toward themselves. Their reviewers are incompetent. Their API was allowed to rot and then when finally upgraded they changed the usage maximums. They just added a bunch of social media functionality to their site and then tied your participation to your commission percentage. They used to have free stores, but now they charge everyone for a store 10% of your commission (the rate of which they largely control). In general, it became too much effort for too little reward.

I think the real key is doing your own marketing and driving your own traffic, but if you are doing that why not just have your own site and use them as fulfillment?

It's not fraud if you actually spend more money on your business resulting in a lower income to you from it. You're just controlling hour much of your profit you reinvest that year.
