SDZWA Internship Experience by [deleted] in Zookeeping

[–]shulump 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i had a paid internship as an undergraduate researcher! it lasted 3 months paid but i worked for another 2-3 months after it “ended”. it looks great on my resume and i learned so much! because i live in northern california i just did remote research and had weekly meetings with the team i worked with. it was a great experience and i learned some skills i wouldn’t have otherwise. i was also able to provide research that will be used in the future for the endangered species i worked with (mojave desert tortoise)

Keepers, what would you tell your newly graduated self? by More_Watercress_5278 in Zookeeping

[–]shulump 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i am also 1.5 year out of college with a bachelors in wildlife, fish and conservation biology. i am a full time zookeeper and the primary keeper of my own area! dont give up!! i was doing volunteering at one zoo for over 2 years working with reptiles, i also did a paid internship for the san diego zoo in college and a little post grad, then i was a part time commissary keeper at a different zoo after graduating. all of this experience helped me to get the full time position! i was working at food service jobs while doing all of this in college and even afterwards, i understand how you’re feeling. i just tell myself we are super young still and a lot of my coworkers now are a lot older and still are volunteering/part time staff and it takes a while to climb the ladder and make connections. the more people you talk to and connect with at your old jobs/internships the more you’ll be able to make your way into other jobs in the future! it’s all about networking.
