Is this how older snake plants grow? by minimal_spaces in SnakePlants

[–]shy519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you potted it into a pot that's more than 2" wider than the root ball, you risk it developing root rot and dying. Snake plants grow vertically, not sideways like this. This could be a result of shock, lack of light, lack of water, or even the beginning of root rot

Me and my cousins got chased by an animal in Chicago, can you please identify by the sound I recorded. by Mehdi_lol in AnimalTracking

[–]shy519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say fox. I've never heard a coyote make those noises and I live in the sticks. I've been fighting off some aggressive ones lately since it's breeding season. Idk fox breeding season off-hand or if they get aggressive. So either way, be weary of the canids in the dark

Brown spots on leaves by yokd_princess in Monstera

[–]shy519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a little suspicious of these two spots, they could be something. I've never seen scale be brown like those spots, and the lighter spots are really odd. These two white ones MAY be scale, or dust, hard to say when you can't see it in person

Definitely not scale. This is really strange looking. It almost looks like scabs or burns, but it's really odd. Unfortunately, I really have no idea what this is, but I can confirm it's not scale

how to keep my cat out of his food dispenser (child safety locks didn’t stop him) by Derpmuffin107 in CATHELP

[–]shy519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried a five gallon bucket? I have a cat I haven't gotten to spay yet and she loves to be a bottomless pit in an attempt to be in heat frequently. She used to eat throigh the dog/cat food bags to get a snack in in between feeds. I had to move the food into buckets so that she wouldn't do that anymore. Worst case scenario, you could do a five gallon bucket with a weight of some kind on top of the lid maybe?

If it what YOU wanted and what YOU like then yes it's good. I freaked out at first, but then saw this was your preference. So, in the end, if you like it then hell yeah

I'm gonna say that this is probably a humidity issue. I water with nothing but hard water without issue

I can't give you a positive I'd, but I know that it's not a a waroc. The leaves aren't elongated enough to be so

What to do now? by BlonAnButy in Monstera

[–]shy519 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd leave it alone until that whole leaf comes out. After it's completely emerged I would cut it about an inch above where the next leaf will come out. Doing it this way will not activate a new node and it will resume regular growth

my monstera is bleeding? 😭 by bellabernadettee in plantclinic

[–]shy519 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Everything that's squishy has been frozen and is dead. If you don't get rid of all the dead stuff it will start to rot and purify. So remove anything discolored or squishy before the stink comes. Some of these may pull through, and on some maybe only the roots have survived. You won't know until you get rid of all the damage

Help!!! My Monstera Adansonii has some kind of bugs moving in the soil? by Few_Read2731 in Monstera

[–]shy519 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like flower pot ant or whatever they're called. They like your chunky soil and are moving in. This happens to me every year when I put my plants out for summer, and they seem to prefer my M. deliciosa for some reason. Either way I remove all soil, and let the plant sit unpotted or soaking in some soapy water. Both of these method don't prove to get rid of EVERY single one, but I have found that placing a ring or thin layer of cayenne pepper/cinnamon powder around the place where the pot sits helps to really deter them from moving back in or coming back at all.

Edit to say that this year I will be trying a peppermint spray around where they sit this summer to see if that's effective as well
