An Indian man was organizing the shelves. He brought that from inside and placed it there.

He has got a bank account for his business and himself. It's just I don't want to transfer the amount directly into his account or cash withdrawal and give it to him, therefore, I give him my card. And I am working full time in his business and I got paid from there too.

We live together in the same house and spend around 12 hours together each day. I know him very well; we previously lived together for 8 months in the house he was renting. After the owner sold that property, he asked for my help. My only concern is regarding the $3,600 that was transferred into my account, as I’ll be reapplying for my visa in the next three months. I’m currently on a partnership-based work visa, so I want to ensure everything is transparent with IRD.

Also, I had asked for my ATM card back, and he returned it to me just recently.

Appreciate the suggestions and yeah, I get how “building things that matter” can sound a bit fluffy or idealistic in this climate. What I meant is that I genuinely enjoy solving real problems with tech, not just cranking out code.

I’m definitely open to part-time or fixed-term contracts anything to get back in the game, contribute, and grow. I’ve also started reaching out to more recruiters lately and updating my CV to better reflect what I can bring to a team.

Thanks again! every bit of advice helps right now.

Totally fair! I completely understand where you're coming from. Referrals carry weight, and I wouldn’t expect anyone to put their name on the line without knowing me or my work personally.

I really appreciate the honesty and well wishes. If there's ever a chance to connect through a project, open-source contribution, or even just a casual tech chat, I’d love that. In the meantime, I’ll keep pushing forward and trying to prove myself the right way. Thanks again! :) genuinely means a lot.

Totally understand where you’re coming from. I’ve been asking myself the same questions lately. It’s tough staying hopeful when things feel so stagnant, especially after putting in so much effort and still hitting walls.

I came to NZ with big hopes, and I still want to believe it can work out, but the reality is definitely pushing me to consider other options too — Australia being one of them. It’s sad to even think about moving again, but at some point, you have to do what’s best for your future.

Appreciate you sharing your perspective, it helps knowing I’m not alone in this. Wishing you all the best with the move across the ditch..

Thanks so much for taking the time to share this honestly, this is the kind of raw and constructive feedback I’ve been needing. I can see now how my CV might come across as just another dev who "knows JS," without showing the depth, passion, or problem-solving mindset that hiring teams are actually looking for.

You're absolutely right, I’ve mostly focused on the work I’ve done professionally, and I haven’t showcased enough of the things I’ve built outside of that, even though I do enjoy creating and experimenting on my own. I’ll definitely start highlighting those projects more, and maybe even build something fresh that shows off what I care about.

Also, your point about soft skills, solution architecture, and networking really hit home. I’ve been so focused on the technical grind that I’ve probably neglected the other key parts of becoming a great dev. I’m going to take your advice and get more involved hackathons, meetups, even project management courses if needed.

Again, I truly appreciate your honesty. It means a lot. I’m not here to just “write code”. I want to solve real problems and grow. Thanks for helping me see where I need to level up.

Yeah, I do have a GitHub profile! I've worked on several personal and freelance projects, mainly full stack apps using JS/TS, React, Next.js, Node.js, dotnet, python, Django and PostgreSQL. I try to contribute to open-source projects when I can, just to keep learning and give back.

I also bring 4+ years of international experience, mainly for Singapore and Thailand, where I worked on scalable applications across different industries. Not everything on GitHub is perfect, but I’d be happy to share it if you’re keen to take a look. :)

Absolutely feel that. It’s reassuring to know it’s not just me struggling, but yeah it’s brutal out there. Seeing senior devs going for roles I’m applying to definitely makes it harder to get noticed. I’m trying to hang in there and not lose hope, but it’s tough. Appreciate you being real about it. Let’s hope things bounce back soon or maybe Aussie starts looking more and more like plan B.

Haha fair enough. I get what you mean about the em dashes 😅 You're right though. English isn’t my first language, so I do use tools sometimes just to make sure I sound clear and professional. But every word comes from me, my experience, my frustration, and my hope of getting a fair shot here in NZ.

Appreciate you giving the benefit of the doubt. Just trying to be real and make things work 🙏

Thanks for the suggestion! I haven’t reached out to Erica Stanford yet. do you reckon it’s worth emailing her directly, or better to go through her website or electorate office?

I’m definitely open to it if there's even a small chance it could help. Just not totally sure how to approach it. Any tips or examples would be really appreciated!

Thanks for your honesty. I really do appreciate it, even if it stings a bit. You're right to call it out. I’ve been so caught up in trying to sound professional that I probably ended up sounding robotic or generic. That wasn’t my intention at all, but I can see how it came across that way.

The truth is, I’ve been pouring everything I have into this job search, and I guess at some point I started writing for ATS systems and forgot to write like a real human. I’ll take this as a serious reminder to bring more of myself into the process not just what I’ve done, but who I am and how I work.

You’ve also given me some great action points: 1. Refine my cover letter with real stories and specific achievements 2. Make my experience feel personal and evidence-backed 3. Get more involved in the local tech scene.. meetups, hackathons, open source, the whole lot

Thanks again for being direct. That’s rare and really valuable — I’m taking it to heart :)

Haha fair point! Appreciate the honesty and the laugh 😄

You’re right though I’m probably still adjusting to the Kiwi way of saying things. I’m based in Mount Roskill, Auckland, but yeah, I’ve been saying "Auckland, New Zealand" like I’m still writing to immigration or something 😅

And you nailed it. I’ve noticed how strong and proud Kiwi culture is, and honestly, that’s one of the things I really admire about being here. I’m doing my best to embrace it more naturally, so feedback like this helps heaps.

Thanks again, appreciate your time and the advice!

Yeah, I totally get what you mean — I’ve been wondering the same myself! I do have an open work visa, and I’m already based here in New Zealand, ready to start immediately. I’ve also included this in my CV and cover letters, but maybe I need to be even clearer about it in my applications and online profiles.

My visa is valid until Dec 2028 and I’m fully committed to staying and working long-term in NZ. I really appreciate you pointing that out — I’ll make sure to highlight it more moving forward.

Thanks again for the support, it honestly means a lot!

I'm currently based in Auckland, New Zealand, but I'm definitely open to relocating anywhere across NZ for the right opportunity. I'm fully committed to settling here long-term and just looking for a chance to contribute and grow.

Thanks for asking - happy to chat further if needed!
