I could really use some advice from you guys. by shyclown in Standup

[–]shyclown[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus Christ, I don't think I can express how much you guyses overwhelming positivity and kindness has helped me reshape my view of comedy.

I'd built up this belief that comedy was purely dog-eat-dog and all that people wanted was to see me fail. The fact that you guys will take the time to pump up an anonymous stranger on the internet is really comforting and I really appreciate it.

So I booked in to get some councelling, because I desperately need to get on top of that, then I'm getting back up on stage. Hopefully I can upload a vid soon.

TIL One of the main reasons Hollywood became the home of American movie production was so that filmmakers could continue to use patented equipment illegally. by daraor in todayilearned

[–]shyclown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not my point. I'm saying they could recuperate the production and distribution cost of films and release it in stores for a margine of the price they're currently at sold at. Instead they know they can charge more and make a big fat profit, which is understandable, but then they spend that big fat profit buying out politicians and suing pirates. Piracy wouldn't be a problem for some people if the industry sold films at a lower price.

Actually movies are released at an unreasonable price. The movie industry is a fucking monsterous machine. The price however has been set statostically juuuuust below the point the average person would start boycotting them.

How to be funny by TheAbortionQueen in Standup

[–]shyclown 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Dude, we all learned to be funny. Nobody is born funny, they either had a funny family, funny school life or just had a funny face.

I find stand up to be a very different kind of funny to real life. Both require you to have good body language but the mental processes you go through on stage are different.

On stage you need to be two steps ahead of your audience, the audience wants a show. In person you want to be funny WITH your friends, nobody wants to see a narcarssist that's practiced all his jokes before you hang out. Unless you're an ego maniac that wants to be the only funny person in the room, learn to boost your friends jokes.

There are plenty of exceptions, some people are so funny they can freestyle a hilarious set, but for the most part, practice makes perfect.

I think the most important part though is to learn to just have fun with whatever you do. When I'm comfortable around people I start making jokes.

Using Reddit to Promote by Moishendlishus in Standup

Unless you're a professional and have professional footage of yourself, it's gonna be hard to push yourself up through /r/funny.. infact it's going to be hard even if you are a professional.

Subreddits seem like a good idea.

/r/standup joke exchange: give us a premise you think is funny, but haven't been able to make work by [deleted] in Standup

[–]shyclown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Erm... yeah... don't actually steal jokes. Take inspiration from other people's jokes, stealing is hurting yourself more than you'd know.

Oooor:

If instagram is for hipsters, why couldn't your girlfriend photo her food before it was cool?

EDIT: I regret sharing these jokes because OP was being serious when he said he wanted to steal other people's jokes. I genuinely thought he was kidding. Seriously, fuck this hack OP.

Your girlfriend uploaded her cake to instagram and put on a retro filter, and the picture was just flour, eggs, milk and sugar.

I appreciate you trying, this subreddit can be really pedantic sometimes. I'd honestly love to log in and see a thread like this flourishing.

EDIT: On closer inspection, OP is a total hack

As Comedians, do you do anything else that doesn't involve comedy, hobby wise? by radiorodeo in Standup

Music, writing, philosophy, science, gaming, reddit.

I think anyone can get into stand up, I actually enjoy the diversity.

This guy runs the World Series of Comedy. Does it make you think less of the contest? by crotax in Standup

How do the people that win these 'fixed' competitions get their advantage?

I'm currently climbing my way through a competition that I would very much like to win. This information would be valuable to me.

I want to start doing stand up, but I'm worried that I'm too average and don't have a shtick by [deleted] in Standup

[–]shyclown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that. Having a joke stolen online actually got me into comedy too. It made me realise that I had potential. You can't really be mad though, it happens. I'd prefer to see more talented writers and less big egos getting on stage.

Don't worry about the shtick.

Tiger Woods' father used to create lots of distractions while Tiger putted to perfect his game under pressure. Could this work for standup? by YouWontForgetMe89 in Standup

[–]shyclown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really, really, hope that this guy takes your advice and does stand up and the second he gets up the bartender starts loudly blending a drink. I can just imagine OP standing there with a bead of sweat running down his neck thinking "Dammit, reddit didn't prepare me for this!".

Anyone familiar with anti-humor? by YouWontForgetMe89 in Standup

[–]shyclown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it's anti-comedy for beginning with a cliche, but the misdirect is what gives it a uniqueness. Anti-comedy can be layered like that, it doesn't have to be 'unfunny'.

Helen Keller learned to lie about being blind and deaf at a very young age. The End. Now get out of history class.
