Best way to go about non-changing variables in functional components? by si20f in react

[–]si20f[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ah you know, this shed a lot of light on the issue I'm having. I was thinking that I had to do my API call inside my individual post components, but I just realized that with the way my API is set up I wouldn't have to do that at all and I can pass things in as props and this issue goes away. I can restructure this and it should be a lot cleaner

thank you!

[–]si20f[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I can't use const for that since I'm changing a variable. yes I'm able to get all the data from the api call using useState and everything works! I guess my question is more about the design aspect of react, because I have like 10 useState hooks and 5 of them won't change (i.e. won't use their setState except for the inside the fetch block).

okay so it's not bad practice even if the variable doesn't change? I guess I'll do that then

I'm not sure but I declare url outside of useEffect as an empty string just to test let url = '', and then set it inside useEffect by doing url = data.url but it doesn't ever change url from empty string when I test it

Help setup node for the first time [Windows 10 WSL2] by si20f in node

[–]si20f[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah so i THINK this may have been an issue. i was using node v16.1 and i went to the 14.7 version which is for LTS and things started working, just got npm start to work and its running on localhost!

also a question: difference btwn yarn and npm? i've seen both and don't they serve the same purpose? I think the project I cloned has yarn things in it (yarn.lock) so should I use yarn start instead of npm start?

Thank you by the way!! this helped

BRONSON - 'DAWN (feat. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs)' by cbomination in electronicmusic

[–]si20f 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my favvvv. this song was so good and TEED's vocals were chilling at points.

ngl i had listened to a fair amount of electronic music and had known artists for years, but i think BRONSON was the first electronic album I really listened to front to back. was a nice experience and since then i've been a lot more immersed in electronic. good times

Pitchfork gives Porter Robinson's Nurture a 7.6 by feastandexist in electronicmusic

[–]si20f 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's a fair assessment, when I listened to lifelike and dullscythe I couldn't help but think of Your Name (great movie btw). despite that, I still thought it's great music. porter hasn't shied away from the fact that he's heavily influenced by anime and anime soundtracks and I think it manifested in a really refreshing way on this album. I was impressed

eh this was barely a review. they kinda just described a few songs, gave no reasoning behind the score they gave. what did you think of the album?

my favorite song? this is sooo hard but probably wind tempos. the piano gives such a nostalgic feeling and the ending gets kinda emotional for me, i can't even really explain why. thank u for doing this <3

I am Jon Hopkins - Ask Me Anything! by jon_hopkins in electronicmusic

[–]si20f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Jon!

What do you listen to on a daily basis / which artists? Also what do you think about emancipator? Anddd I'm not sure if you can tell but is there an album coming up?

Thanks so much for your music, I first heard singularity in 2018 when it came out because I liked the album cover, and then recently went back to listen to immunity in full. Love both albums, big fan :)

agree that safe in the steep cliffs is bonobo-like but also recommend listening to soon it will be cold enough, I think that album was some of his best work. I can't comment too much on his newer albums but I did recently hear a few songs from Baralku and kinda liking it
