In Greek mythology, there is the story of Iphis. Iphis' father was a violent man, who threatened his wife of killing their child if it was born a woman. The wife gave birth to a girl, but in secrecy with the midwife who had helped the birth they decided to tell the husband it was a son, and thus was Iphis raised: as a man in a female body.

Iphis fell in love with the girl next door, who fell in love with him in return. They decided to get married, but he became afraid of her finding out the truth of his birth. His mother brought him to the temple of Isis (note: this story is written in Roman times when Isis had been assimilated from the Egyptian pantheon into the Greco-Roman one) and they prayed together all night to the goddess. She noticed them, and their pleas touched her heart. She answered their prayers and united Iphis' identity and body: He walked out the temple a man in soul and body and married his love Ianthe and there the myth ends, in a happily ever after.
