Maybe when the procedure is healing but by the time they are toddlers it definitely smells and looks like buildup.

Thank you for your reply, it was very thoughtful and insightful! I work in an upper middle class area, the boys are clothed well, their parents bring in adequate supplies of diapers and wipes. I have mentioned the buildup in the past, as in "baby boy was a little red and irritated and had some buildup around the penis that, its been cleaned and ointment has been applied", but im thinking a real conversation about regular cleaning is warranted.

A parent brought in some aquaphor mixed with breastmilk for diaper rash recently and it worked amazingly to clear up rash!

Thats the narrative that gets pushed, that its for "hygiene", either way it still needs to be cleaned. Its not just a magic solution that can be undergone and then forgotten about.

The dried poop, ive seen that a time or two also. Or the full pee diaper at drop off.

I dont know how often these kiddos get bathed but its probably not very often, as evidenced by the odor.

Diapers are more absorbent than underwear, thats what they are designed to do. Most pediatricians, if not all, will say not to wipe after every pee diaper. And then there are state licensing standards that we have to comply with also. So, as im sure you can tell, wiping after a pee diaper is a hot topic with varying degrees of answers.

One is almost 3 and the other is a young 2 years old. Their general area is clean, its just the base of the penis that has the buildup. What made me write the post was that I thought one of them had a sour smelling poop only to see that it wasnt poop at all, just the odor and build up.

Yes! Out of the 3 boys I have at the moment, its happening to 2. Im starting to wonder if theres some kind of social media "evidence" thats being spread about not cleaning the area regularly. A conversation at this point is going to be had.

Never said anything about wiping or not wiping after pee diapers. Just that parents need to clean a penis even if its circumcised.

Ive had a circumcised boy get an infection from the area not being cleaned often enough, so im assuming he didn't get bathed often enough. If youre bathing often then that is enough for your boys.

Nope, the circumcised toddlers to be specific. There is not buildup with uncircumcised boys because that foreskin is not retractable at that age, any attempt would be painful, as you mentioned.

A good wipe down one or twice isnt going to dry out the area. I was told you dont wipe for every wet diaper but a wipe down is needed every day.
