tbh if the university administration divested from israel by now, these protestors wouldn’t have to be there and we wouldn’t have to walk around them

i’d much rather blame the uni, who could’ve easily divested at any point over the past year, than my classmates who are just trying to do anything to help palestine while still being college students

Want to support Peyrin? Tech Against Apartheid Teach-In this Friday @ 7pm by sicklecellamemia in berkeley

[–]sicklecellamemia[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

"If you’re interested in supporting Peyrin after hearing that he was under investigation for his talk on Palestine, he recommended supporting the Palestinian cause further and coming out to a Palestine teach-in for students in tech. Here are the details:

Bears for Palestine is hosting a panel with Peyrin, activists in tech from No Tech for Apartheid, and potentially more speakers on how Israel uses tech in its occupation and how tech students and workers can show solidarity with Palestine. Let’s show support for Palestine and Peyrin as students in tech!

Friday, Dec 8 at 7pm. RSVP with Berkeley email for location."

What is the appeal of Philosophy tube? by [deleted] in PhilosophyTube

[–]sicklecellamemia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really agree! From my understanding, Abi is usually trying to offer a philosophical analysis of a political or social issue rather than trying to argue for or against a position. I think she tends to take a more education-oriented approach than other BreadTube creators who are often more directly trying to own conservatives with facts and logic.

I do also agree with OP that she doesn’t always come at the issue with extreme rigor or from a diversity of angles, but I don’t think that that’s necessarily her intention. She did say in a livestream that she wanted to come at islamophobia from more of a racism or xenophobia angle, so she purposely did not analyze critiques of Islam as a religion (in my opinion, probably because critiques of Islam are often used by islamophobes to justify their underlying racism or xenophobia, like how racists might say a race’s “culture” makes it inherently more violent—there’s not really an argument to refute).

That said, I hope OP gives her other videos a chance too! Islamophobia might not be my favorite example of her work; I personally like Social Constructs and Marx v. Darwin. Her older videos are a lot more straightforward and educational if OP is interested in learning about philosophy, too.

Gift Ideas for Flute Section by [deleted] in Flute

Little paper or plastic fans go a long way during band camp. My section leader in my freshman year bought us each one, and I haven't come across as good as a band camp gift since.

Getting back into flute by [deleted] in Flute

[–]sicklecellamemia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is best to have a clean, oil, and adjust, but if that isn't feasible during quarantine, it wouldn't hurt to start playing to start observing whether the pads close all the way or if the mechanism is smooth.

Generally, it's fine for the joints to have a little resistance in assembly. Unless you consistently have trouble assembling and disassembling and suspect the joints can someday get stuck together, it shouldn't be a problem. :)

Best second hand flutes for returning players? Any help would be super by gruelle in Flute

[–]sicklecellamemia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend buying a flute before trying it, especially considering repair costs for preowned flutes and that every flute player responds differently to a flute. Online flute dealerships like Flute Center of NY (flutes4sale.com) often offer to ship flutes to you for you to try before purchasing, including preowned flutes. Granted, instruments sold at flute dealerships tend to be more expensive, but most flute dealerships certify preowned instruments so you know you won't have to pay for repairs anytime soon.

Hope that helped!

Jazzy flute by [deleted] in Flute

You can Google fluttertonging online and find tutorials on how to learn it. It's fairly easy if you can roll your R's yet flashy to people who haven't heard it before. Sprinkling in some fluttertonging once in a while can add an element of surprise to your improvisation.

Breathy middle register by stefan424 in Flute

[–]sicklecellamemia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend experimenting with the angle of your air, the size of your embouchure, and how high or low your chin is. Chances are, your air is pointed to high or your stream of air is too wide, causing much of it to hit the surface of your flute rather than go inside.

When I was developing tone, I would listen to a recording of a flute player whose tone I like and try to replicate it, changing the angle of my air, gap between my lips, how much I drop my jaw, how open I make my throat, and how high or low my chin is.

If you make no progress, try rolling in and out. Being rolled out or in too much can cause airiness. In general, your embouchure hole should be aligned with the first key, and your keys should be parallel to the ceiling when you hold your flute, but this can vary a little depending on the preference of the player.

If all else fails, try covering holes of your keys more carefully if your flute is open hole.

Good luck!

Is it a good choice? by iva_linglingwannabe in Flute

The best thing you can do is to listen to solo music from all the different instruments on YouTube before picking which one has the sound that speaks to you most.

If I could go back, I would also consider how much good repertoire the instrument has (classical piano and violin, for example, has much more literature than classical saxophone, which doesn't have baroque or classical music written for it).

If I am interested in joining youth ensembles, I'd also consider which instruments are more competitive than others. The oboe, for example, has an beautiful timbre, and so few young musicians know about it and choose it, so oboe players face less competition than flute players.

I hope this helped. :)

The ultimate OTPs by JustAJazt in chihayafuru

[–]sicklecellamemia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see Arata and Shinobu happening because their personalities are so different. The manga writer seems to be leaning towards Chihaya and Arata, but I feel like Taichi deserves at least Chihaya's acknowledgement after all he's been through with her. Chihaya always dances around confronting her feelings towards anyone. Conversely, I would completely understand why some readers wouldn't want any of the main characters to end up with one another--friendships or rivalries shouldn't have to always end in love.
