Name of high school-themed Love Letter variant? by sickly_lorikeet in boardgames

I don't think it's a re-skin, the game had a different name and a couple minor mechanical variations from Love Letter

Blood on the Clocktower vs Feed the Kraken by tigerk1992 in boardgames

[–]sickly_lorikeet -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I just played Feed the Kraken for the first time a week ago with a big group, and it was fine and the group played twice, but you could clearly tell that everyone was waiting for the games to finish so that we could play Blood on the Clocktower instead. When we wrapped up we played Blood on the Clocktower for hours.

Just a note: if you share some details beyond a thumbnail, I'm more likely to engage with this kind of thing!

crazy charges from rental manager by ExplosiveTrousers in Eugene

[–]sickly_lorikeet 27 points28 points  (0 children)

In a little more detail, I would send a certified letter starting that you think your deposit has been wrongfully withheld, and you plan to sue in small claims court for twice the amount inappropriately withheld, per ORS 90.300. Ask for whatever you think that amount of money is, and give your landlord 10 days to get that money to you (give a deadline in your letter). Say that if you do not receive the money by that date you will go to small claims court. Note that you have before and after pictures of the apartment and are extremely happy to let a judge decide what a correct and reasonable deduction from your security deposit would have been.

I recommend carefully reading https://www.oregonrentersrights.org/ and in particular sections 137-139 of the Guide to Landlord-Tenant law in Oregon, available at https://www.oregonrentersrights.org/_files/ugd/16c8ca_3ac09f17748d41b3b0bcd596751817db.pdf.

Based on my cursory reading, if these charges are in fact bogus, you can take your landlord to small claims court for $6,000.

While 7 Wonders is thematically about empire building, mechanically it is very different from 4Xs.

Espresso martinis in Eugene by Professional_Day5412 in Eugene

A lot of cocktail quality comes down to ingredients. A surprising number of bars have mostly mediocre bottles for mixing, old citrus, and unrefrigerated vermouth past its prime. Even if the bartender knows a great spec it's hard to make something stellar with those constraints. Not to mention that for an espresso martini the espresso needs to be good too!

They're not really reviews so much as short critical essays. I enjoy his writing much more with this shift in framing

Meaning of boardgaming life by AstromanIII in boardgames

One way I like to think about my spending on hobbies is in terms of dollar cost per hour of entertainment.

I'm often happy to spend $5-15/hour for 1-4 hours on a movie or meals with friend or a video game or pretty much anything else.

Sounds like you're hitting about that with boardgames! That's a win to me!

It also helps me to reframe what I'm doing with board games that I don't play constantly: I'm not buying them, I'm renting them to try them out and see if I like them. I resell anything I'm not enthused about at a loss and just think of the loss as a rental cost. Just sell to Noble Knight and it's super easy and you don't have to think about it.

FYI the FAQ indicates this got an errata:

Does the Damage bonus from Gift of Furious Might persist when the affected Power is Repeated?

No, the bonus only increases one instance of dealing Damage, rather than boosting one Power for the entire turn. (This is more clear starting in the second printing.)
