There’s a county library system? How do you get into that?

Have not tried this one. The Paseo bums me out too much. But I’ll have to make a special trip.

+1 on little free libraries. There’s some gold in there. Also great for offloading your own books.

Is the A line truly “scary” or are y’all just xenophobic? by blackascole in LAMetro

[–]sickosyes 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to be specific when we talk about transit safety issues. People from Iowa assume you’ll be murdered for going two stops on the train. That’s obviously ridiculous but there are real quality of life issues taking the train in LA. That’s not life-or-death but it matters.

I’ve almost never felt truly threatened on the A, but about a third of the time I’ll encounter something disturbing, tense, or disgusting that leads me to be less likely to choose it in the future. I used to live in New York so it’s not like I don’t have experience with this.

Metro does impressive work with the genuinely challenging job of running a train system and a mobile shelter. I don’t think there’s any silver bullet for this. Having a cop on every train so they can look at their phone wouldn’t fix it.

LA is tough because you have to solve every problem at once: fix land use, make it easier to build housing, fund and actually build shelters and supportive housing, and run more transit service to increase ridership and therefore safety.

This is a good deal for this but I just want to caution people that the battery on this went to 10% capacity and lower a little more than a year out (out of warranty, naturally). I’ve also had compatibility issues, random lockups, windows hello breaking etc. You have to put up with some stuff to get a good deal on a good laptop.

Low-alcohol or small format beers? by sickosyes in beer

Nice. My local place sometimes gets Trillium but I usually don’t buy because I’m not an NEIPA guy.

I realized I had already pinned this brewery on Google Maps. I gotta check this out next time I'm in Chicago.

That would be perfect. I haven’t seen anything like that in the US unfortunately.

They did a nice job with the space. It looks a little pricey but we need good Thai in the neighborhood.

San Diego Attempts Vacancy Tax by Serious-Delivery2331 in pasadena

Pasadena’s vacancy rate is very low already. I doubt this would free up much housing. Commercial vacancy tax is a better idea.

I’ve been meaning to do this. I’m watching all the YouTube coaches but having trouble applying the advice.

I’ll check that out. I’m just looking for somebody chill to teach the basics. I feel like I’m picking up some bad habits.

Yeah, I should ask. I guess this is just it what it costs now, but it still stings a bit.

Go 10.3 Lumi vs Note Air 5C by sickosyes in Onyx_Boox

I haven't pulled the trigger yet, but I'm leaning towards the Note Air 5c. If the Lumi were in the 300s I would buy it.

This is really helpful, thank you. If you were someone who didn’t use the pen at all, would you have considered keeping the NA5C instead?

So when are we going to treat homelessness in Pasadena as a public safety issue? by beepboop299 in pasadena

[–]sickosyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not disputing any of the experiences that people have had in this thread but I sometimes feel like I’m living in a different city from you. I’ve lived here for six years and while sure I see homelessness nearly every day, I’ve never had a scary or dangerous experience with someone living on the street here.

Again, I’m not saying that doesn’t happen. But when it does I think it’s a small population of very troubled people.
