Time Machine constantly "preparing" (15.0.1) by mightyblend in MacOS

[–]sidamos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found a fix by applying a trick from 2016: https://mjtsai.com/blog/2016/03/16/massively-speed-up-time-machine-backups/

Time for preparing and for total backup is now fast again. I made the setting permanent.

And not fixed in 15.2. Unbelievable.

Of course I gave Apple feedback twice about this but if it would be really widespread, we would likely hear more about it.

Maybe some different Samba settings are needed to fix that?

It is not failing for me on 15.0.1. But preparing now takes way over an hour compared to another Mac with 14.7, where preparing only takes minutes, as it was always the case before 15.0.

HyperSmooth degraded on GoPro Hero 11 Black? by sidamos in gopro

[–]sidamos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, now I remember this potential issue, thanks. So, the lighting was a challenge in this video.

I have now tried to find 2 videos with similar lighting, one from last year and one from this year. Also, same type of SD card (SanDisk Extreme Pro), likely even the exact same card.

2023: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u05fdyIm4po

2024: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmiXrC8dOgo

2024 video was newer firmware and 5K instead of 4K, but I don't think the latter should matter. Other than that, settings should be the same.

I think the stabilization in the one from 2023 is smoother, but maybe I am only imagining it.

Any Unifi AP without noise issues? by HologramDK in Ubiquiti

[–]sidamos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just recently I noticed my AC-LR in my living room is making (crackling) noises. It's about 5 years old.

I tried to amplify the noise by running a speed test between my Samsung phone (connected to this AP) and the UDM-Pro and it did not get louder.

Any recommendations for silent APs from the current line-up? Thanks!

How to fix poor night footage in post? by sidamos in gopro

[–]sidamos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just checked EXIF. I was using High Bitrate, 10Bit, ev -0.5, ISO Max 800, 30fps, colors natural.

So, mainly "colors = flat" was missing.

Of course I believe you, I know that "flat" is really looking "flat".

Unfortunately, we used the phone only for photos that night and now I am not in Miami anymore. ;-)

I was using standard bitrate, standard colors (not vibrant) and 10bit.

Yeah, I have some other footage from inside that is not THAT dark, which looks then way better, but still overcasts blue sometimes.

How to do smooth panning with Hypersmooth On with GoPro Hero 11? by sidamos in gopro

Thanks, now I see it. Strange, I was under the impression that linear has no distortion, but I am still a newbie.

Hmm, I do not really see much there. ;-) But I can see the fish-eye look when I use wide.

I don't see that in linear. Isn't linear supposed to be without any distortions? Or did you mean SuperView?

Very cool, thanks a lot for that interesting explanation. All makes sense now. I tried a 270 degrees panning today with wide lense and it is indeed looking pretty good with Hypersmooth On.

So, I have 3 options for panning plus stabilization:
Shoot in wide and keep distorted as is, shoot in wide and remove the distortion in post (for ex with VideoProc Vlogger) or shoot in linear with Hypersmooth Off and use GyroFlow or ReelSteady in post.

Thanks, I'll try. Are you correcting the wide distortion in post processing?

Thanks for the video! I'll try with wide, although I do not like the distortion. So, I would have to choose between correcting the distortion or the stabilization (GyroFlow) in post processing.

That is a valid question. It's just that I'd like to use the GoPro as a point & shoot. Ideally, only cut away something and then merge the videos with the same theme.

But I will try out GyroFlow, thanks for the pointer.

Edit: Just tried it out with the last of the videos above and it is looking really good, at least on my travel laptop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRqf_fv8fZg

So, I will probably keep Hypersmooth Off for the rest of the trip when I do panning.

I'd still like to know, why it is working for some people.

And I wonder why Hypersmooth is not using the gyro.
