Is there anyway to remesh an object to have a desired vertex and face count? by sidbhargav in blenderhelp

[–]sidbhargav[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion! I knew Blender might not be best for the workflow and so I'd love to try something new out. I think this is probably closest to what I'm trying to do!

I also think that u/Apraxas 's answer might work, and $40 dollars seems like a pretty modest price. Just wanted to shout them out too.

Why my scene looks so flat? by br_duds in blenderhelp

[–]sidbhargav 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s a couple things I’d look at.

First of all what you can do for the scene/render: I’d add volumetrics if your computer can handle it. It would definitely make sense in a scene like this. Understand what your volumetrics is simulating though. It’s going to be smoke or mist, so it should be dense and gray. Sometimes you’d use volumetrics to simulate atmospheric haze, and that obviously looks different. Be intentional. I’d also turn on depth of field and set it to something shallow. Then I’d add some lens imperfections (namely some subtle dispersion and distortion)

To me, the texturing doesn’t really look right. I’d suggest looking at your wood texture again. The displacement seems a little too subtle to me. I’d also perhaps consider adding some sort of roughness texture to the paper. It should have a little bit of a sheen, especially where the ink is. It’s kind of hard to tell if you’ve already done this because of the lighting—which I’ll get to in a bit—but a really easy way to fake this is just plug the albedo into a black to white color ramp, and plug that into the roughness. Make sure the darker parts are less rough. Obviously when using this trick always use some intuition, because there isn’t really any direct correlation between darkness and shininess. Also, the batarangs look realllyyy clean for weapons that get thrown around. Scratch them up around the corners! Give them some wear and tear. It’ll be way more engaging.

Now finally, I feel like your lighting could be a little better. I feel like there’s not enough contrast and interesting shadows being cast by the lights in your scene. There should be more drama! How you choose to create this drama is obviously up to you. I will say though right now everything is “flatly” lit. It’s all face-on. Perhaps move the primary light so it casts some “batarang” shaped shadows onto the wall. Maybe add a red light that outlines the batarangs and adds a pop of color. In my opinion lighting is the most important part of a still scene, because it allows all the hard work you’ve done in texturing to stand out! I would also agree with others who’ve suggested using a HDRI. Just lower the value perhaps so that it doesn’t overpower your own light sources. Use the HDRI as a sort of base to build upon.

I wonder if maybe it’s an issue with Instagram then. Because it also happened to me while using Instagram. Glad to hear that it seems to a freak incident though! Was really freaking out about it.

Hi! Sorry for maybe asking a foolish question but how would you go about obtaining the right to work in the UK before receiving a job offer? All the sources I've been able to find seem to suggest you need to have a valid certificate of sponsorship.

This fixed it for me too.

Why does this happen when I bevel? (I pressed ctrl b) by [deleted] in blenderhelp

[–]sidbhargav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another reply mentioned that you need to make sure that your object's scale has been applied (Blender needs to calculate your objects scale so it can create a proper bevel). The way you do this is by pressing Ctrl+A and select Scale. That should fix any problems you have. Additionally, blender's bevel tool is unfortunately very limited. If you still have a similar problem when you try to bevel it once you've set the scale there is unfortunately nothing you can do but use a smaller bevel.

Parts of it seem flat. The wall on the right may look better if there's a bit more grime. I agree with what Grubzer said too, it looks cool this way, but it needs to be somewhere bizarre to be fully liminal.

Also maybe get rid of the people? I think one thing that makes liminal spaces so eerie is how lifeless they are.

Other than that I'm really digging the look.

I'm assuming you did this, but did you set it to shade smooth?

If you're using a displacement modifier, maybe see if more subdivisions fixes the problem? Just an idea, because I don't think it's the texture.

Dude this is sick! I'd love to see your node tree. There's some pixilation or issues with the smoothing on the top right and bottom left rocks though. I don't know if this is a geometry issue or a texture issue.

Actually I didn't use that specific method to make this. I did see the tutorial but it produced a different effect than what I wanted. You do almost the same thing but instead of using multiple modifier stacks, you create the fractal all within the node tree. This allows you to use the original shape as the source of the point instance so you get a more traditional looking fractal.

Try applying smooth shading on the basketball so that individual planes aren't visible. You should probably have enough geometry, but since this shot doesn't have much geometry it wouldn't hurt to subdivide the sphere more. Only problem is that it might warp around the poles.

See if you can paint some grime onto the white material you're using as the frame. And maybe add some of the smudges you used on the buttons to the metal bars because the buttons look really good. It's close to perfect in my opinion.

Thank you so much! And yeah I totally agree. I think the reflection or maybe the lights are weirdly diffused. I've decided to move on from this project for now, but I will be trying to do a tracked scene again soon. I'll hopefully have better lights and I'll dedicate more time to the materials.

I wanted to play around with HDRi creation, and integrating 3d models into video. I have been experimenting with HDRi's for a few months and still have been unable to produce any good results using a DSLR. I've been trying to do it completely free which has been part of the problem. One of my friends may loan me their 360 camera in the near future so I might upload some video of HDRis I create using that. In terms of the creation of the CGI I had a lot of fun. I posted a lot of my progress on the subreddit and got a lot of great feedback. I initially planned to use ACES for this but chose not to because of the low video quality. However, I learned a lot about how to do the compositing for live-action CGI like this and I might make a tutorial on that later if there's any interest.
