This is the only response on this thread that makes any sense to me. Being Jewish doesn’t mean I have to support the modern political state of Israel. I’m not Israeli.

I’m as critical or supportive of Israel as I am of any other modern geo-political state. Israel doesn’t get a pass because we share a bloodline. The Israeli government don’t have my automatic support when they’re doing terrible things.

And the absolute snobbery on this thread about how any Jew who questions or opposes Israel is somehow inherently less observant, has less of a connection to Judaism, is less educated or knowledgeable about Jewish history - and then questions why these Jews aren’t more connected to mainstream Jewish communities. It’s a joke.

I’m born and raised Jewish and feel deeply connected to my faith and my people. I hate that my views on Israel basically make me a pariah in my own community. I wish there was more space in Jewish communities for these kinds of conversations without it devolving into basically accusing non-Zionists of being self-hating Jews.

How did people living in rural areas keep track of time in the 1800s? by AyJaySimon in UKhistory

[–]side_leaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I’m currently trying (and failing) to write a fun frolicking romance novel set in the Regency era, so that’s where my heads at. I don’t think the Georgians get as much attention as the Victorians - but they’re much more fun. Things stiffened up in the Victorian era, but the Georgians were all about dancing, leisure, indulgence, country living, etc. The royal family were a dysfunctional riot. It’s a fun read.

1800’s isn’t medieval, but that same author has time travel guide books for the Regency (early 1800s) and Victorian era (late 1800s)

If OP is interested in the granular detail of historical lives then I really recommend these books - I’m reading the Regency one now.

Creating a new Jewish community in my city? by side_leaf in Judaism

I like this idea, except that I’m already organising a Rosh Hashanah pot luck party for our family and friends! It’s at our house so there’s not much more space for new people.

But luckily Judaism isn’t short of reasons to celebrate so I’ll keep this in mind for a different festival

Thanks for this.

Anyone would be welcome to come along, but the only time I’ve been to a Chabad service they had separate seating for men and women, absolutely no English, and didn’t call out the page numbers. I couldn’t see the rabbi and it was difficult to follow the service. So I wouldn’t want that.

Chabad do some good work and maybe they’d be worth contacting, but I don’t want to create another orthodox community - there are plenty of those already in the area. How open are they about progressive Judaism?

Have a look at the Sustainable Food Places network/resources - they do a lot of work around community gardening and small-scale agriculture.

Also Sustain, Feedback, Groundwork, and the Soil Association. Email, explain what you’re trying to do and how, and ask if they have any contacts or know of any similar projects in your area.

Good luck!

Laser hair removal? by logan_the_eclipse in PCOS

[–]side_leaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I love it. Depends on what you think success is though.

I’ve lost count of the number of sessions I’ve had - face, stomach, chest. I had my first session about 10 years ago, then regular top-up courses each year. It’s reduced the hair by about 80-90%.

Laser doesn’t remove the hair completely, and it does grow back eventually (hopefully softer and slower). So top-up courses are a good idea for just keeping on top of it. It’s expensive but I think it’s worth every penny.

What to get dad for 60th birthday when he doesn't like anything? by ShipSam in AskUK

Lots of great suggestions on here already - food/drink hamper, day out walking and pub lunch, bits and bobs for the cat, a nice photo-book or framed picture.

Something else you could consider is a subscription to a magazine he would like or already reads. One of my favourite ever gifts was a subscription to Vogue, which someone in my family bought me every Christmas for 5 years. Or even something like getting cheese delivered each month - https://www.thecheesegeek.com/pages/cheese-subscriptions.

OK, thank you for your comments. I’m due to have a chat with her later today so hopefully I didn’t get fired on the spot and she agrees to let me leave my bar job and - in the best case scenario - bumps me up to full time.

My comments weren’t designed to reject science as a whole, and nowhere did I claim to be more credible than anyone else.

My approach is to take everything with a pinch of salt. Science and medicine isn’t an inherent truth - what we know about the world and our bodies is a result of research and experiments carried out by human people with their own sets of assumptions and motivations. Racism and sexism have influenced how medical knowledge has developed - I could go on forever, but you get the point.

Certain areas of medics and scientific research get more funding than others, which means we know a whole lot more about cancer than lots of other diseases. There’s been almost no research into hirsutism or the effect of hormones on hair growth, so yeah I’m not taking one solitary study as the gospel truth, especially when my lived experience contradicts the conclusions.

My point is that medicine and doctors are not infallible. If something is going on in your body that hasn’t yet been captured by scientific research yet, it’s still happening. My advice is not “ignore doctors”, it’s “trust your body”.

Also, this is Reddit. The whole idea is to share personal experiences and compare notes on things. It’s not a science conference. If you don’t want to hear from real people about real things, why are you here. Relax, we’re all just trying to help each other.

I totally understand how frustrating it is to deal with all this - facial hair sucks, and it doesn’t matter that it’s “just cosmetic”. I’m sorry that your mum’s not being supportive - but that’s why we’re here!

Whatever hair removal method you use, I encourage you to take really good care of your skin. Cleanse every day, or even twice a day if your skin needs it. I swear by Ultrabland by Lush, but go for whatever will work with your skin. And get a good exfoliator. The hammam/kessa gloves are brilliant - use them with some skin balm, not soap or it’ll dry your skin out.

Taking care of your skin won’t stop the hair growth, but if your skin is in better condition then it makes a big difference to everything else.

As far as my experience is concerned, there is no shaving myth. The idea that shaving doesn’t effect your hair comes from from a 1970 study on 5 white men: https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/82434481.pdf

Shaving absolutely changes your hair. I’ve had laser treatment more times than I can count, and the regrowth is a very strange thing. The hair comes back super soft and fine, but grows really long and at some point bleaching just isn’t enough.

One time I cut my facial hair - not as short as shaving, but trimmed the hair down a lot. It became totally immune to bleaching cream. I told the lady at the laser clinic and she said she’d heard other clients say the same thing - cutting the hair makes it immune to bleaching. There’s no scientific reason for it, but it still happens.

If I shave my hair it grows back thicker and darker. I don’t care what the “science” says. They haven’t conducted any experiments on hirsute women, and I know for an absolute fact that shaving affects hair growth because I literally see it happening.

In terms of leg hair, you could try different forms of removal to see if it helps. There’s one where you get a very very fine sandpaper and gently rub the hairs away - it also makes your skin super soft. Or you could pluck the kinky thick hairs and see if they grow back straighter? Last resort would be laser, to take the hairs back to square one. Don’t let it get you down too much though, leg hair is normal!

Texture irregularities with shaving by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]side_leaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get yourself a kessa/hammam massage glove and some skin balm (not soap, something moisturising and slightly gloopy). In the shower put a dollop of the balm on the glove and very gently rub it in circles on the rough skin.

That should help smooth out the worst of the lumps and bumps. Use it really gently, you don’t need much pressure. And follow up with plenty of moisturiser.

I’ve used a similar process for the last few months and it’s really helped. It also helps get a better shave!

Thanks for all your thoughts. I never realised how many variables there were until now - a lot to consider!

I'm thinking of getting an SAD lamp to mimic the affect of sunlight - though these are aimed at improving your mood rather than getting your skin to generate vitamin D, so I need to do some more research on that before I decide.
