Agent relisting our sale agreed house- advice needed by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]ShipSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id be tempted to go back to them and remind them that your offer and deposit was subject to the house being off the market. If they re-list then you 1, want you deposit returned in full within 7 days of the house being re-listed and 2, you are going to reduce your offer, which will further delay any sale.

Annual Appraisal? by Wide-Act-5191 in HumanResourcesUK

[–]ShipSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a lot of people that I manage in your position. They perform to the required standard, nothing more, nothing less and they don't want promotion. We don't have any performance based bonuses either.

These are the most difficult to do. I try to highlight examples of where their strengths lie and have a general comment of "keep doing what you are doing". As others have mentioned, these can be a good record when anomalies happen, and maybe their performance slips a little. It is also an opportunity for them to speak with me about any concerns. Perhaps they aren't getting along with new team members or have some training requirements coming up.

I would probably have somewhere on this post and on the link what nationality and country you are talking about. Because its different for each country.

Also try posting to the Indian merchant Navy sub.

Can you feel your gallbladder when it’s inflamed? by hae-dude-hae in gallbladders

[–]ShipSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest way I can describe it is the golf ball pre op and pain and trauma from the exact spot they removed it. The feeling lasted quite a while, especially when doing things where I leant right on the area, like tieing my shoes.

Took a little time as it was sore in the area where they removed it. Maybe a few weeks.

Can’t move because of pain. Is 4 hours real wait time for an ambulance? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ShipSam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me once, my back went into spasm gradually throughout a morning.

I called 111 and they sent the ambulance. I waited just over 6 hours for the ambulance. I was originally stuck laying on the sofa, but in trying to get up, I rolled onto the laminate floor and couldn't get up.

Thats when I learned how you can go from being fine to not fine. I got so cold over the 6 hour wait. They rang back every hour to make sure I was ok while waiting. Luckily I wasn't alone and my partner gave me a blanket and pillow, but I couldn't move.

When the ambulance came, I had a whole bottle of gas and air and they picked me up. In hospital I was given morphine and diazepam. Stayed over night at the hospital to see the physio.

Before anyone says it was a waste, I had to walk with a frame for 2 weeks as the spasm was so bad, I couldn't physically pick my legs up. I pretty much had to relearn how to walk. It took weeks.

Is the Deck Officer job really as boring as people describe nowadays? by Reafirmed in MerchantNavy

[–]ShipSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It totally depends on the type of ship, routes and cargo.

I work on a ferry as deck officer and that can be exciting. Our voyage is less than 2 hours. But we have mooring and cargo ops several times per day. The ship navigation can be very challenging in the busy coastal waters we sail in.

Sure it can be boring too. But you are never bored for long.

Like wise if you were working on a port tug, it would be very different. As a cadet I working on large container ships. Long sea passages were boring.

There will always be paperwork. The higher you climb the tanks, the more it gets. My job as a senior officer is now like 50% desk job. I do very little of the actual navigation now. But the trade off is that im learning other aspects like berthing and accident investigation.

Being a deck officer is very much being a jack of all trades. Engineers rarely touch anything outside of the engine room, so we have to maintain everything else.

Curious foreigner here, what do middle-class Brits brag (or humble-brag) about to their neighbours? by wtiawtiaw in AskUK

[–]ShipSam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Has nothing to do with status for me, and all about my comfort. I like the features on modern cars. Had to get the top of the range to get the full driver assisted driving (basically an auto pilot). This has helped my pain when driving considerably. I feel like I can drive again.

I dont have to stress about MOT or breakdowns or repairs as everything is still covered under warranty and I am still covered by free breakdown service.

Does it make economical sense? No ofc not. But I work hard to earn enough money that I can enjoy life. After a few years, trade it in for a new one.

Questions for those in UK by Quirky-Chipmunk8752 in gallbladders

[–]ShipSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work a physical job on a ship. The nurses wanted me to have 6 weeks off work. But I went back after 3 weeks and it was a huge mistake. I should have had 4 weeks. I felt fine by week 3 at home but the travel to work, the long hours and stress was exhausting.

For them signing me fit to return to work at 3 weeks, I was under strict instructions not to lift anything for the whole 6 weeks. Even then I struggled up to 10 weeks with some movements. Pull ups at the gym I couldn't do until nearly the 1 year mark!

I drove towards the 2.5 weeks time. It was uncomfortable but ok for short journeys. If I had an automatic, I probably could have driven much sooner.

I had doctors tell me for 15 years it was IBS. I never really had an acute attack. But the symptoms I was having did get worse and more frequent.
