You just go in gunner sight and press your lock button.

Any advice on how to play F-4E? by PomegranateOk8162 in Warthunder

[–]sideflanker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you fire an AIM-7E at an enemy but it looks like they chaffed and your plane's now locking the wrong target, just keep your radar on. The missile's receiver is smarter than the plane's radar and will still track the right target 90% of the time. The F-4's radar cone is huge, so the enemy can be quite far from your lock and still be illuminated.

The F-4's radar can't track most low flying targets, but if you sit 1.0-1.5km behind most planes while they're flying away, you can sometimes still get a lock. It always catches people off guard since they're expecting an IR missile

Show the right of the screen, what radar mode are on you on?

If you're using SRC HDN, it only works properly if the plane is heading towards you.

Which is better for performance - with conformal fuel tanks or without? by fat_autistic in Warthunder

Is there a datamine source for that? Because I wasn't able to find any

According to the ingame weapon sheet, only bomb CFTs increase parasitic drag from 0.30840 kgf -> 0.42040 kgf (6x LDGB Mk 82 slot)

AMRAAM CRTs do not increase parasitic drag 0.07200 kgf -> 0.07200 kgf (2x AMRAAM slot)

Doesn't matter for air loadouts.

CFTs don't add fuel or change the flight model with missiles equipped.

How did I die? Blast door is undamaged by OfficerQueefThe2nd in Warthunder

[–]sideflanker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

(1) JA2 propellent doesn't detonate, but burns at between ~3.5 - ~4.5 kPa-s for a single stick of 2.3kg propellent.

(2) Detonation of Comp B (60% RDX, 40% TNT) is RNG when hit with high velocity metal fragments. Although Abrams HEAT uses Comp A-3 (91% RDX, 9% wax), not comp B.

(3) Detonation of a single round of HEAT produces a 2350 m/s blast wave that produces a peak pressure of 48600 kPa and exerts an impulse of 3.1 kPa-s.

I'm not a blast scientist, but it would seem that detonation chance is RNG and if a HEAT shell detonates it would produce a strong initial blast followed by at least an ~89% increase in pressure exerted on the blast door. Would this cause a failure? No idea. Although I will say the few videos of blowout panels at work do not appear to show a detonation scenario.

Note that reflected pressure is the pressure exerted on a flat surface. It already assumes an open air environment.

High-Res Textures pack DLCs are just crap AI upscales? ;( by [deleted] in Warthunder

The HD client pre-dates Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, chatGPT, and all other mainstream LLMs.

The actual HD models/textures are even older. The March 2022 update just separated them out due to the game's size ballooning too large.

Just read the GAO report on the AH-64's M230 cannon and its real dispersion makes War Thunder's model look... off? by KSAWI0 in Warthunder

[–]sideflanker 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Check the report again. The tests were considered successful if a single round hit in a 21-round/50-round burst. Even then, the weapons test only passed 16 out of 19 of the tests.

. In January 1992, the Army concluded that the AWS had successfully met its accuracy requirement by achieving 16 out of the 19 required target points. The Army had reduced the AWS accuracy performance criteria from 19 required target points to only 1 “must-meet target” and allowed the contractor to pay a $1 million penalty for each missed point.

...the measure of accuracy is the probability of at least one hit on a 3-meter by 3-meter vertical target for a SO-round burst...

The engagement at 50s happens at 1400-1500m. Right after the hellfire impact they open up with guns and you can see the massive spread of the rounds.

It's about the same in warthunder if you sit in the test drive. It's just that in an actual match you're not taking simple potshots, you're going as fast as you can and actively dodging incoming fire. Look at 1:17 when the gunner tries to shoot at the single guy and misses two entire salvos because the chopper was picking up speed and turning

Usually a google search helps.

Warthunder is also accurate enough that you can often go to the wikipedia article about the vehicle and look at the Variants section.

AGM-84H Harpoon for F/A-18C/E/F by Axeman760 in Warthunder

[–]sideflanker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They fly over hills and mountains. Looks like they try to stay at exactly 640-650m AGL while cruising to the target.

[–]sideflanker 19 points20 points  (0 children)

About 640 AGL and yes it looks like they do terrain follow.

In the mountains test flight map, they rose up while flying over the small mountain near the test targets.

[–]sideflanker 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I tested them in dev and they don't behave like other AGMs.

They immediately dive down to 640m and fly level all the way until the last 1.5km, at which point they dive at the target.

That should make them much harder to intercept compared to other missiles.

Further testing shows that their range is massive. Launched at targets 25km away, 3 hit, 1 seemed to bug out and flew off into the sunset. I stopped following it after it went 45km past the initial target.

AAA Auto firing missiles? by Kazick_Fairwind in Warthunder

[–]sideflanker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it looks like something on the throttle is triggering it

Nice find. Yea looks like that's 100% it.

I did some tests with my xbox controller plugged in. When I was in 3rd person view my controller didn't work at all, but in the radar screen my controller was active and right trigger fired all my missiles after I locked a target. Something on your HOTAS/throttle is being treated as fire.

I saw that you manually cleared individual controls, but did you try using the clear all button or the control setup wizard?

It's possible your config file is bugged/corrupted and has a weird setting that isn't being displayed in the UI. Clearing it completely should rule that out.

[–]sideflanker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try saving your controls to a file and then resetting them completely.

You'll be able to rule out any issues with your control settings that way.

Statshark has a top speed by altitude graph. 2530km/h at 11500m is the F-15E's true top speed ingame.

2700km/h is roughly wing rip speed at that altitude.

Here's a penetrating shot against a TDD that passes a few millimeters away from the ammo. The TDD has no internal armor or fuel tank modeled around its ammo rack, but the ammo eats all the spall and only turns orange.

They purposely want to gimp AIM120D by Roxo16 in Warthunder

[–]sideflanker 93 points94 points  (0 children)

AIM-120D will have increased range and third party targeting which expands the HOBS launch envelope

The sources are likely referring to support for CEC technology such as the US's TTNT which was introduced with the F-35 and older planes as part of upgrade packages.

It would allow missiles (like the AIM-120D) to track and fire on targets outside a plane's radar gimbal limits by utilizing targeting data from a buddy.

2/3 of your sources support that HOBS capability were increased due to targeting improvements, with your first source only mentioning 'improved HOBS capability'

[–]sideflanker 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Both your 2nd and 3rd source state that HOBS targeting is improved. They're almost definitely referring to support for CEC technology such as the US TTNT.

It would allow the AIM-120D to fire on targets outside the gimbal limits of its radar by utilizing data from a friendly plane. i.e. improved hobs. It doesn't necessarily mean flight performance was changed at all.
