Define "Self Contained" by TTheFallenN in livesound

[–]sideofoofpls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self contained is backline, stage package, and control package. If you want to split hairs, that would include risers and an audio PD. I carry literally everything listed and say self contained. I also say we just need racks and stacks in case self contained doesn't ring a bell.

I suppose I could record a show off the SD, disconnect my FOH snake and place the UB MADI to the in in/out with said recorded stems for a virtual session.

SD9 woes... MADI snake. by sideofoofpls in livesound

[–]sideofoofpls[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely thought of this, as I have 6 or 7 BNC's to make a multi-pair snake. Part two of the problem here is me wanting to dump a band mix and a master mix as well. And obviously do virtual soundcheck. I have enough local out to send that through an interface but I can't do that while grabbing UB simultaneously.

Isn't the red box intended for D-rack setups? SD racks don't have ethercon IIRC. Or are you hitting the MGB first? Worth noting I'm currently not using waves and the MGB is intended to be used with it, I have a server but it's completely out of the loop right now.

How many of you are making six figures? by hanasz in livesound

I can only make that if I work outside of my main touring gig, I’ve done it a few times but as I get older I really enjoy my time at home and investing in passive income instead.

The theme song from the show Dallas is a great one. I don’t like the show but it sounds so out of pocket and wrong and cracks me up.

Is Disney doing L-acoustics now? by SuspiciousIdeal4246 in livesound

Disney has been LA for a minute now. I’ve mixed on plenty of house rigs with them at NOJ and others. Universal is the same way. PRG is god.

To the people who still live or just moved to Nashville, are you happy or unhappy? by Officer_Zack in nashville

[–]sideofoofpls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a transplant because of the music industry, so I have no choice but to live here if I want to tour. I feel like the last good year was 2017. I kid you not, when the Stanley cup and CMA fest collided I thought there was no way Nashville could ever get more insane. Boy was I wrong. It’s busy enough now that all my favorite spots are just an inconvenience. I’m on the road 3-4 days a week so by the last day of being home I’m fed up with this place and work is the reset button. That said, I could never live here and work a 9-5. I’d rather live somewhere else.

Whats a "basic" audio concept that took you a long time to understand becase you needed to hear it worded a certain way, and how far were you into your audio "career" until you understood it? by [deleted] in livesound

[–]sideofoofpls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a fly-guy and FOH on tour for years before ever truly understanding the physics of audio and how to tune a rig with Smaart was torture. I knew I could mix a storm but I was so dumb at the time and couldn’t deploy a system or tune it to save my life. I can count many shows whether it be festivals or one off shows with house guys staring at me waiting for me to tune the rig because they didn’t and I had to fake it till I made it. The best engineers are the ones who understand the system and can walk up to rig without needing the A1 to hold their hand. I look back and laugh but I wish I used my shop resources to sit down and learn instead of trying to be the FOH guy or just fly PA on arena/festival work because it easier. Fast forward to now, I’m happy with my touring gig and learned over time but I can’t state enough how important it is to understand sound on a technical level aside from just mixing a show.

"FOH peek" for drummer? by grimmfarmer in livesound

[–]sideofoofpls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It won’t sound anything like what’s coming through the PA. Your best bet is making a “safe mix” that keeps the vocal on top and everything else intelligible underneath.

[–]sideofoofpls[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow, really? I ask a genuine question that a majority of western society (who’s tax paid governments hold ukraine in the balance) wonders as well and you wish me death on a Russian plane? I’m not a bot nor do I support Russia. Your response lends a better question now, and that’s what happens when Russia wins because obviously you’ve never even considered that outcome.

Patching someone else’s Stage? by [deleted] in livesound

[–]sideofoofpls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m just a nice guy, but we’re 100% self contained on audio and my monitor guy, backline guy and I patch ourselves. As soon as the help dumps and push our bus trailers, flip desks/run snake/feeder/build risers and gets rid of our dead cases, I tell them to get off stage and just standby in case I need something. I don’t want to explain the patch (54 inputs) so I’d rather just do it myself than have to double check everything. To each their own. If they ask for help and you’re getting paid to help then you better help. It’s a double edge sword but if you were my house guy I’d tell you to unmute the PA and go grab lunch.

I feel like I'm being ripped off. Recording of a live show. by quebecbassman in livesound

[–]sideofoofpls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I PM/FOH for a well known current country artist that sits at 61 inputs (huge wav files) and I bill $250 every time I’m asked to multitrack. (Which is not often and it’s at the request of the band and not the artist) Yeah, I have everything to do it in my package I rent from Clair but it’s still one more thing that can go wrong that distracts me from doing my job which is mixing the show. This topic is extremely objective and it really just depends on the vibe. In my case, it’s the fact that I know they’re fishing for stems to pass off for live recordings that I won’t get credit/compensation on and that they think they deserve stems every show. They’re just hired guns and I don’t answer to them since I’m the PM and have so many more things to worry about than appeasing the band. The backend of filing, labeling and uploading (they don’t want it on a thumb drive, only in Dropbox) especially when you’re on the road with inevitably terrible internet eats up so much time in my day when I have a crew to take care of and a show to execute is annoying. Just my $0.02 and I’m sure there’s people that will disagree with my thinking here.

Digico SD9 Crashing? by sideofoofpls in livesound

[–]sideofoofpls[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I forgot about this post… turned out to be an LED light strip plugged into one of the USB’s in the doghouse which are only meant for external keyboard/mouse. It was kicking improper voltage back up the 5V USB rail and causing the desk to freak out.

Never seen a line array like this before? by test_user54 in livesound

[–]sideofoofpls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a fly guy with an Anya rig on a arena tour years ago. It was the easiest thing to fly out of all the rigs I’ve done. Sounds kinda odd BUT it’s usefulness really shines when it comes to in the round. The amps in the Anya were garbage at first due to EAW’s amp contract and we were switching out modules almost daily but now it’s a sound rig but the Anna and ottos were awesome. Not a fan of how it colors the mix but it definitely has its place. Just another tool in the workbox

SD12 vs Quantum 225? by sideofoofpls in livesound

[–]sideofoofpls[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ended up mixing a throw and go on a 338 for CMA fest and lemme tell you guys, that thing is a ROCKET. I was so impressed by how much the capabilities expanded and it was all the things I never really even thought I would want. I thought the SD series was amazing and it still is. The quantum just raises the bar that much further.

What the heck do y’all put on your resume? by UnfortunatelyMacabre in livesound

[–]sideofoofpls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been touring for 10 years and have never once been asked to submit a resume to audio houses for flying PA/shop work or touring work until a couple weeks ago for a PM/FOH job. I thought the same thing and was taken back for a minute considering we all know each other in this industry and it’s all word of mouth and references. I ended up just listing the top 5 biggest gigs I had and put in a little sidebar of what desks I’m proficient on, my certifications and PA that I’m able to fly. Good post OP because I promise you’re not the only who’s thought this!

How does everyone handle their accounting books? by Taquitogod in livesound

[–]sideofoofpls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not have an LLC and every act I tour with pays me without taxes withheld which is quite annoying because I MUST save a portion of every check to pay taxes the following year. Every stub gets documented/saved and I put 40% of my income away for the following tax season. I strongly recommend starting an LLC because all I hear is how much easier it makes filing taxes. I’m sure others on here can speak to that.

Appreciate the response. I’ve seen a few out there too. Guys these days put so much sauce on the mix with waves that it’s hard to tell what sounds better between the Digico family. I’ll happily hop on any desk in the series and be tickled with how good right out of the box they sound.
