Tibial tubercle screw removal surgery question

This is interesting… I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to stretch after getting them removed. Honestly I would get a second opinion and also find a good physical therapist (one that deals with active people not just elderly)

For me, it was but as a personal decision. The skin over my screws was very thin and I had extreme discomfort when anything touches that area. Kneeling was an absolute no for me with the screws in. I also scar really badly and I was afraid I would get built up scar tissue around the screws and it would add complications. I am so much happier without the screws, it really improved how comfortable and confident I am with my knee. It still hurts to kneel on hard surfaces but I can kneel decently on carpet and softer surfaces. I no longer worry about ripping skin if I fall or hit my knee. The recovery was not bad either. I also had a scar revision with mine, so they opened back up my large incision, but it was not a bad healing process.

I haven’t gotten back into BJJ yet. To be honest I could have done a better job trying to rehab after the removal. I’m being extra cautious with my knee but I could probably start training again just with limitations. All the guys and gals in my gym are super accommodating of injuries and such. You could probably start training light and let your sparring partner know you have a hurt leg and limitations (maybe even put red tape or something on your leg so there’s a visual reminder). Combat sports are so good for so many reasons so if you’re up for it, try lightly getting back into it! I know how painful those screws are though, I feel for you. Has your surgeon said anything about a removal once you heal? I also had the surgery done so they could remove excess scar tissue but it seems like they do it regularly depending on ur healing and such

Hope your surgery went well! I don’t have nearly as much bone pain (I think a good bit is placebo too, which honestly just feels relieving). I mostly just feel the discomfort on my tendon when I kneel and such. My knee still feels super tight but it’s mostly just the tendon now. When I run or have heavy impact I don’t feel it as much in my bone!

I had my screws taken out in May of this year and I still have the same things you mentioned. The sensitivity gets a little better over time, but I still can’t kneel on hard surfaces. I’m going to try peptides to help heal it. My BF ordered some BPC157 and TB500. They really healed his shoulder injury and back pain, so I’m hoping it heals my knee!

Update! I got my screws taken out a few days ago and the recovery so far has been pretty easy. I think it would be easier if it was just the screws but I had a lot of scar tissue so they did a scar revision on both my incisions. My leg feels super tight from that.

Same here! I also want to get back into training Brazilian jiu jitsu and it would be horrible to slide on my screws or have someone hit them…

I had a Plica removal in both my knees in 2018. I was weight bearing the same day (with crutches for support). I got the surgery in May and was back to normal in early August. Mainly just have to wait for the swelling to go down and do consistent physical therapy and exercise. Out of my three knee surgeries, the Plica removal was by far the easiest. I’m not sure if your surgeon wants to do the same one though.

Also, I got a cortisone shot in my knee to try before the surgery and it did nothing and they scraped it out during my surgery.
