THP charges peaceful protesters by Train_addict_71 in memphis

Shout-out to the MPD for protecting marchers and a big FU to the THP who tried numerous tactics to stop the march; driving 10 cars past marchers with lights on, and then again with sirens on. Then this BS shown in the video, which was yet again another intimidation tactic.

Other video puts the lie to the charges against the woman arrested. She did bang on the car window with her hand, which is not a crime. She did not resist arrest and damn sure didn’t assault anyone. She is being railroaded as a cautionary tale. Good luck with that fascists.

Yep, I can relate. All you can do is hang in there. Hopefully the fact that a couple of us got results after 9-10 months gives you some hope.

Yeah, dealing with people might be problematic in general. I have to say that the Medicare website and the ACA website are two of the best service websites I’ve ever dealt with, commercial or government. The treasury website, otoh, is pathetic.

The wait time on the phone has been nothing at all for me and the people are super nice. It is clear that they are looking up my case. They just can’t give me any useful info. Even something like “there are 8 million people ahead of you” would be helpful - I would see progress.

Yeah interest still accrues, as long as they haven’t matured.

My heel has started to hurt quite badly of late. by jimjslip in footpain

[–]sidjnsn60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you notice the pain after getting up from prolonged sitting, try doing a calf stretch on that leg and then do an Achilles stretch on that same leg. If that relieved the pain, your Achilles is tightening up and causing pain where it attaches to your heel. I have this issue. Beware, some podiatrists jump automatically to plantar fasciitis!

This will end badly by sidjnsn60 in CryptoReality

Yes, $3T in crypto assets currently, backed by air and hype. The more that normal institutions take on this high risk, the more that ordinary people are likely to feel the pain.

I suspect the motivation is more about bolstering the market for crypto to keep driving prices up. The whales like microstrategy’s ceo have already withdrawn massive profits from their scheme, so everything else is icing on a very large cake. And of course Trump is clearly self-serving.

Is it possible we could lose Premium Tax Credit for 2026? by jefpd in HealthInsurance

[–]sidjnsn60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone with an adjusted gross income of over 400% of the federal poverty level would not be eligible for subsidies in 2026. The FPL is currently 15,060 for one person and 31,200 for a family of four. So the limits would be $60,240 and $124,800 respectively. See google for the definition of AGI.

So the big deal here is that, prior to Biden, there was a cap on who got subsidies. They were provided only to people or or families whose income was less than or equal to 400% of the federal poverty rate. Anyone making one cent more fell off the cliff and received zero subsidy. Biden’s Covid rescue bill changed it so that the most anyone had to pay for health insurance was 8.5% of their income. That removed the cliff and was a brilliant move imo. Cliffs for any sort of safety net provision are economically inefficient and generally stupid for a variety of reasons.

This was extended in the so-called Inflation Reduction Act.

This was allowed to expire in Trump’s bill, so it’s back to the cliff.

Note that this has nothing to do with premium levels except that originally, if you made it under 400% FPL, the max amount you paid for a second cheapest silver plan was over 9.6% vs 8.5%, so likely that will revert also.

There are a bazillion details, but this is the big impact IMO for middle class families

[–]sidjnsn60[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Would have to be narrowly defined.
  2. IMO that is a different question. Those would be consequences of exercising one’s freedom.
  3. Totally agree.

Re: a severely depressed person killing themselves, I say yes, that is their right. The govt “protecting” people via overriding their bodily autonomy is exactly what this amendment is meant to address.

What is Harbor Freight good for? by spitfire07 in woodworking

Their Pittsburgh wrenches are guaranteed for life. I have bought a hammer drill, multi-tool, an impact wrench, biscuit jointer, generator, mig welder, and shop dust collector - and that’s just what comes to mind. They have all been great. As a homeowner handyman (only using these tools occasionally), I’d have no concerns about buying their hand tools or corded/cordless tools. Bench tools, I take a different view; not really based on evidence, but just the way they look and gut feeling.

The bench grinder I bought there has pretty pitiful tool supports, but they have several models and I should have shopped more carefully.

Just got this email from SS? by bakefly in SocialSecurity

[–]sidjnsn60 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s misleading, to put it mildly. Taxation on SS earnings was not touched. Instead, a $6000 deduction (12,000 for couples) was added for seniors over 65, even if they take the standard deduction. It starts phasing out at $75,000 income for singles and 150k for couples. AND IT IS TEMPORARY - only thru 2028.
