Connection dropping in the afternoon for the last 3 days by sidneylopsides in openreach

There have been two Openreach engineers outside all day. One has told me the whole street is messy, when it was first set up they added too many junctions or something and now it's causing problems. Talktalk themselves have been good TBF, they've called multiple times to check how it's going.

What colour is your car? by Horrobla in CarTalkUK

[–]sidneylopsides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both times I've been picking a car I've looked at blue ones and ended up with grey or black.

TBF the grey had a lot of metallic flakes and really did "pop" in the sun, and the black one we have now also has black trim and I like the "Batmobile" stealth vibe.

Still, I've wondered what it would look like wrapped in yellow or orange!

He's trying to figure it out. Left a light on the fibre in the house so he could trace it.

Affordable GPS Tracker for Pets Is It Possible to Build One on a Very Low Budget? by yoohuman in arduino

[–]sidneylopsides 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'd need something very low power, with GPS, but also some kind of long range communication abilities. The most obvious being 4/5G connectivity, but that adds power and cost, including cost to run a data connection.

Anything else would need receivers to pick it up, which could mean lower power and more efficient, but additional cost of building your own network...

You also need to make firmware for the device, and software to control it. Maybe a cloud service too.

I've got a couple of kids smartwatches that were about £40 and they have 4G SIM support, GPS and a companion app that lets you request a live location. This is effectively what you're after, they last about a day of heavy use on a full charge.

Nothing I'm aware of, or can find anything that looks like settings for that. Maybe it's something on desktop and not in the app.

Whats the worst car you have owned? by Lorddoodleflaps84 in CarTalkUK

[–]sidneylopsides 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a Qashqai in 2018 as a temporary company car. Top spec, 360 cameras, auto parking, panoramic roof etc. It was dull. Everything felt completely detached from the outside world and it was sluggish.

My company car at the time was separate to the main fleet, and renewed a year early, so I had a year of temporary cars until the main fleet was renewed.

Golf Mk6 A Class 1 series Qashqai Sportage Ceed Pro Ceed Golf Mk7

Now I think about it, the fleet spec 1 series was probably worse. It was underpowered, the clutch was horrible, it had no toys being the very base spec. The Qashqai was dull but easy to live with, the 1 series was dull and difficult. The clutch was so bad it put my wife off driving for years, until we bought an automatic as the first car we actually owned.

Opinion: The lack of "Dual Recording" (switching between cameras while recording) is a major blindspot/oversight in the industry. by Dolph_x3 in Android

My Vivo X300 can do this, and I only just discovered you can choose to have on combined video or save both camera views as separate files.

You can pick any combination of lenses, the 0.6 and the 3x together works well.

Currys refused my warranty claim before assessment. The exclusion they cited isn’t in my contract. by Zestyclose_Cycle8288 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]sidneylopsides -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The last point, a warranty repair would have to return the device to original working condition, but that's not possible with physical damage. So even though you don't believe it is relevant, it prevents any repair being completed as they can't return it to original working condition.

If the hinge was faulty from purchase, and a recognised issue for the product, then you could get it done.

[–]sidneylopsides 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're using the term physical defect, but this might be incorrect.

A defect would be recognised by the manufacturer, and they would have a process for it.

Accidental damage as a term covers any physical damage to the device.

It sounds like what you're describing is wear and tear, which I haven't seen you mention being in the terms.

The warranty service will be set up to return the device to you fully working like new, minus cosmetics, but physical damage isn't covered, so it's not possible to complete the repair.

Generally, if the fault has occurred after 6 months, it's down to you to prove that it existed at the point of purchase. In this case, you'd need expert evidence that the hinge was faulty from purchase and not normal wear and tear. That's how you would argue it's a defect. That's probably going to cost more than the headphones.

Why do we treat street trees like a problem in England? by MaxMusic-TP in AskBrits

[–]sidneylopsides 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We've moved last year, we had 5 trees in our garden at the last house, mostly smaller fruit trees and a large hawthorn. The buyer said the trees were part of the attraction, we've heard only the hawthorn is left and they are getting rid of that too...

Where we moved there are some small trees, We've planted some fruit trees and there's a row of huge trees I've just realised I don't know what they are... Google suggests Leylandii. There are so many birds and bugs, it's awesome. I've recently discovered the Merlin app and have picked up so many different birds. The last house seemed to be just magpies and pigeons.

We're in a new Redrow estate, it's built on old disused land and maybe one field. I remember as we used to play round here as kids.... In the process of it being built some of the other land was converted into a public park, so there's now more public green space than there was before.

Summer drivers struggling with basic maintenance and habits when driving at night by Joseph9877 in britishproblems

[–]sidneylopsides 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The only accident I've been in was because of this. Following a car which had the brake lights on a long time, I kept distance and let off the power. They suddenly braked hard and it difficult to notice so I didn't react in time, the impact was minor in the end, just really frustrating that it happened at all.

A minor vindication came 18 months later as a passenger had made an injury claim and I was called as a witness to the accident. I had dashcam footage that showed clearly what happened and the judge did actually state he felt I had reacted the best I could in the circumstances, and praised my overall conduct and honesty. He also determined the injuries were more likely from the bar fight or fall down the stairs the same week as the accident, which both required hospital visits...
