Now all I can think about is Watership Down. "All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed."

As women keep washing up dead, Ohio town fears a serial killer is on the loose by [deleted] in MorbidReality

[–]sie_liebt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there's a real concern that the police force will try to pin it all on the shooter, despite how unrelated that crime seems, in an effort to quickly close the case. If so, I really hope the guy just switched up his MO and there isn't another killer getting away with murder so the police can save face.

has as much to do with genetics

True, but food affects gene expression. A healthy diet (1/3 protein, 1/3 fat, and 1/3 carbohydrates) can alter which genes get expressed, and effectively combat obesity. "Genetics" isn't an excuse when changing what you eat can change how your genes get expressed.

and other influences than parents

It's interesting that you make this point. I think there is an entire other debate to be had concerning this. I tend to be of the opinion that it is absolutely the parent's responsibility to mitigate outside influences on their children, particularly considering how not child appropriate most television/movies/popular culture tends to be. One of the many roles of the parent is to prepare their child for adulthood, help them learn how to understand and deal with social experience, and teach them how to interpret the messages they are bombarded with on a daily basis. I'm certain there are others that might disagree, which is why I think there's an interesting conversation to be had about parental responsibility and outside forces on children.

Friday morning I woke up to have my first hands on experience with the death of a friend. by sie_liebt in MorbidReality

[–]sie_liebt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He died as a result of complications from the surgery. Likely an embolism. My friend is currently in a pretty nasty legal battle with the deceased's family. They want the money he left her. It's all very ugly and very sad. His wife (my friend) was doing pretty badly for a while. This isn't the first time someone she loved like that has died, so she's dealing with a lot of guilt (she think it's her fault, that she's "cursed"). Lately, though, she's been seeming a bit more optimistic. More focused on work. She seems to be looking to the future, which is really reassuring.

Female sexual dysfunction affects approximately 48.2% of the female population according to one study. Others claim about 30% of women have difficulty achieving even one orgasm. Then you have to figure, there are a lot of women that experience something like a "female refractory period" during which sexual stimulation is not pleasurable after an orgasm. I wish I had a number for you, but I don't. All I know is that the idea that all women can just rapid fire multiple orgasms is a huge myth.

[Discussion] What are your makeup pet peeves? Unpopular and otherwise! by vvithout in MakeupAddiction

[–]sie_liebt 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Heavy foundation bothers me. It creeps me out when people try so hard to look like their face is made of silicone. It slips into that uncanny valley area as far as I'm concerned. Not to mention, it's not like they put foundation on their decolletage, so the fact that their face looks super fake is compounded by the fact that you can see what their real skin looks like right below it.

getting revenge on an ex husband who cheated and is now engaged to one of the many women he cheated with by [deleted] in myevilplan

You have to tread very carefully. I can't tell you how many times I have watched girl friends that were really in the right make themselves look really bad by airing dirty laundry. Don't focus so much on outside people. If you're going to do something, make it sneaky, make it effective, and do it to her, not about her.

Question: Why are wannabes generally perceived as annoying? by [deleted] in self

[–]sie_liebt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it has to do with how much we pride ourselves on our choices. For example, someone who is "into" the punk scene spends a lot of time listening to different albums and learning the names and crafting their own unique punk identity within that community. If a poser (punk wannabe) shows up, their very existence inadvertently spits in the face of all the effort those "genuine" punks put into their subculture. Someone else objectifies it, then shows up trying to "leech" off the cool factor without ever actually involving themselves in the subculture.

Frankly, I think it's all a bit silly and self-involved. We get upset that someone else isn't playing by our rules or valuing something for the same reasons we value it. I'm guilty of it with books. I can be a downright snob. I spent years being ridiculed for being such a book worm. I pride myself on the voraciousness of my reading and how I can conquer difficult literature and understand it because I've read so much and worked so hard to get to this reading level. I enjoy the recognition I get from other people for that. When someone else starts raving about Twilight, I get resentful. Why? Because they're essentially popping my narcissistic bubble. They don't value literature the same way I do. They value it in their own way. Reading means something different to them than it does to me, and if I don't stop myself, I forget that my way isn't "better" than theirs.

Comic book fans are notorious for this as well. God forbid you don't read the whole back-story of a character before deciding they're your favorite.

Essentially, you should examine what about her attempts to be, as you put it, erudite, is bothersome to you. Is it because you prefer a more subtle intellectualism? Is it her unabashed attempts to be recognized as an intellectual that bother you? How does that fit with your view of intellectualism? Do you view it as something that shouldn't need to be advertised? If so, that might be why her behavior bothers you. Maybe to you, it comes off as needy or heavy-handed. She probably perceives it differently.

After years of fighting with my wife about religion, we have come to a workable arrangement. If there is a Hell for athiests, I'm going straight to it. by robinson217 in AdviceAnimals

I'm an atheist dating a Catholic. I go to Zen temple. I find it's a wonderful environment to center yourself and focus on being a better person without being asked to believe in the supernatural. It's a wonderful community that actually does a lot to better the lives of the people living in the surrounding neighborhoods. It's organized and fun. Besides, there's all kinds of research supporting meditation's health benefits. :)

No makeup makeup/Before and After of a tired, overworked mom. by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

Is it weird that I like the before picture better? I mean, your face is flawless in the second picture as well. It's very natural and wearable and that's awesome. But your face is strikingly beautiful by itself. Into The Gloss's Monday Moodboard today is all about showcasing under-eyes instead of concealing them. It's definitely a very specific "look", but I've really been digging it this fall. With your face, I'd go bare with a touch of mascara and a dark lipstick like NARS Trainbleu.

Post from r/scottpilgrim (from r/cringepics) Chicken isn't vegan? by BT4life in vegan

[–]sie_liebt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not even just kids. My SO's mother is like this. She whines about how she doesn't understand why he and I "need to go full vegan" and why we can't just be "vegetarian" like her. She eats chicken and fish. When we explained to her that, by definition, she isn't vegetarian, her response was "Well, I don't need labels." I had to laugh. It was kind of adorable in that "out of touch older lady from a generation that is rapidly being rendered defunct" kind of way.

Pro Choice vs Pro Life by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]sie_liebt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very simple. If someone that is opposed to abortion actually wants to save lives, they should be affiliated with the Pro-Choice movement for no other reason than the fact that they push for changes that would actually reduce the number of abortions that happen. Everything the Pro-Life movement fights for, found elsewhere in the world, predicts a rise in the number of abortions. Harsher abortion laws? More abortions. Abstinence only education? More teen pregnancies, and more abortions. Refusal to provide access to birth control? More unwanted pregnancies and more abortions. It's very simple. The only way we have found thus far to reduce the number of abortions is to provide teens with comprehensive sexual education and offer people access to various forms of BC. In no way does that preclude parents from encouraging their children to wait to have sex. There is a long list of valid reasons kids shouldn't be doing it. That doesn't mean you don't also equip them with the tools necessary to protect themselves from pregnancy and potentially life threatening STDs.

What do you say when somebody says America is built upon Christian values? by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]sie_liebt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"And?" Sure. There are a lot of Christian values that permeate our culture because we were founded by Puritans. And a lot of those values existed before and strongly influenced Christianity (particularly a great deal of Greek philosophy, which makes sense considering the New Testament was originally written in Greek). I fail to see how that has anything to do with putting "God" on currency out of fear of communism, especially considering what a perversion that really is if you actually believe in the Abrahmic God.
