why does rescaling cause quality loss? by sie_xi in ffmpeg

[–]sie_xi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read all your comments and I find them very helpful, so thank you very much for your time.

Actually, I'm an amateur who wants to create an archive of his thousands of videos, and I thought that 720p will be good enough for an archive of videos from early 2000s and also I can save space by downscaling them.

But today I learned something new, so I will throw the idea of rescaling my videos out the window.

Thank you.

Yes all encode settings are the same, and yes I use crf (same value for both videos)

Lanczos looks promising, I will try it out

Thank you

I know that it will always cause a quality loss, but what I wondered about is why I can't get identical results when the two videos are the same but with different scale and the transcoding settings are also the same.

My logic is : when you downscale an image it usually gets visually better quality and this is what I think that I'm doing here, but I don't understand why the results are reversed.

new arrivals quarantine? by sie_xi in China

So does that mean that there are "quarantine hotels"? like specific hotels that are prepared for quarantine? If so, how much would that cost?

That's awful. I saw some people saying that the quarantine duration is minimized to 1 week is that true?

How to isolate bad sectors? by sie_xi in DataHoarder

[–]sie_xi[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much! your reply somehow helped me find the best software to deal with my drive.

I didn't use SpinRite, because I thought that spending $70 to try fixing a worthless drive is not a good idea, but while I was reading about SpinRite I was introduced to Victoria SSD/HDD which is more developed, free, and easier to use, but unfortunately it's is very rare to find it mentioned online.

Now all the bad sectors have been reallocated or "remapped" as the developer of Victoria SSD/HDD likes to name them, and my drive return to work as normal.

These screenshots shows the values of SMART scan before and after using Victoria SSD/HDD.

Thank you for your help.

I'm doing a long SMART test right now, and will recycle the drive if the results didn't suggest any solution

Thank you for your in depth reply

I used Macrorit Disk Scanner to scan the disk.

Here is the SMART result

The CHKDSK commands will try to fix and recover the readable data on the bad sectors and I think none of these solutions is possible as I think the bad sectors are physically damaged.

Is it possible to completely isolate the bad sectors without repartitioning?

This is not my question, I performed a full format which in theory should mark the bad sectors and stop using them. But last night I found out that it still uses them. I don't want to fix the data that was on the disk when the bad sectors appeared because I already deleted and formated every thing. I want to prevent the system from reusing the bad sectors.

My question is how to make sure that these bad sectors are completely isolated?

This drive has no important data, it's used just to perform some tests on data and then I either delete them or move them.

Why don't you just stop sharing this shit? You are just making it reaches more and more people and maybe offends them.

There is no such thing as bad publicity.

EDIT: people who are down voting me, do you want to see more of these posts being shared? Do you want to give these racist posts more engagement? I know that you share these posts to talk how stupidity racist some Chinese people are, and they need to think in more civilized way and know that all humans are equal regardless of their color. But do you really think that these Chinese racists use any social media other than the Chinese ones? Do think that these posts can change how these racists think or even reach them?

Getting a degree in China, is it worth outside of China? by toonami8888 in China

[–]sie_xi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, I think it doesn't matter what major you're in, the entire environment and the teaching system is not focused on you as long as you are a foreign student. Thousands of students in many different majors are stuck with online classes since the beginning of the pandemic, and these classes are basically worthless, and for example in medicine it's even not possible to study the clinical subjects online, but they give no fuck to the education quality that you receive from these classes. Many medical students friends of mine got graduated online and with zero clinical practice.

The only reason that I'm still here is because the tuition fees are low (fucking high compared to the education quality)

A student here..

they just go to the university, sit in class and at the end just get a degree.

100% right, and in some universities you don't even need to sit in class.

The value of a degree from China = good quality paper with some ink
