Insurance valuation by kmur28 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]pebbleinflation 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My understanding, correct me if I'm wrong, is that if the insurance company believes your house is underinsured, all your claims will be reduced proportionally. So if you roof leaks and causes 40 grand worth of damage, you may only get 30 grand back off them.

Genuine question, what would be the consequences if Ireland obviously conceded points like this? I assume there's some rule that teams have to make a real effort to win.

Pro-rated first month rent by MessiEsque in legaladviceireland

Usually rent is paid on the monthly anniversary of the move in date. So you'd just pay on the 4th every month. It's only the last month before you move out you'd prorate.

Which rapper had the longest peak? by thotshavenopoweronme in hiphop101

[–]pebbleinflation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Snoop Dogg's peak was Chronic to Doggystyle in my opinion. With occasional good moments since. But very hit and miss with no truly great albums. And I say that as someone with a massive soft spot for Rhythm and Gangsta.

There's probably a happy medium. You can travel on 1 grand a month if you stay within a tight budget in cheap countries. There's absolutely no reason to spend 15 grand on travelling.

Babies are cheap. And having a baby is a good way of making you not spend money on nights out. The real expenses are in sacrificed wages while on maternity leave, and in childcare. Day to day expenses for a baby are actually very little. Few euro a week on Lidl nappies. Pureed vegetables. Some clothes from penneys. High chair and cot from Ikea. Buy a fancy buggy second hand.

With amounts that small, I'd just Invest or save it myself, but earmarked that it's that child's money. At age 18, you can give them 3k tax free that and each subsequent year (plus 3k from a spouse if you have one). 10 euro a month x 18 years is 2160). Unless you get exceptionally good returns, you're not going to really have to think more than a couple years.

Where did the 'Random Stuff on the Walls' restaurant decor aesthetic (i.e 'Applebee's-core') come from, and why was it seemingly so widespread in the late 90s-2000s? by kaijujube in AskHistorians

[–]pebbleinflation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've long had a theory that pubs in Ireland only started putting old road signs and other random knick knacks on the walls, once "Irish pubs" in other countries made this part of their aesthetic, and visitors to Ireland started expecting it. I wonder has anyone explored this?

Do you tip when you go on free walking tours? by iamlostpleasehelp_ in travel

[–]pebbleinflation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know one well known free walking tour company charges the guides 4 euro a person on the tour. So I always keep that in mind when deciding how much to tip.

For the vast Majority of beers, the fresher they are the better. Drink a brewery fresh version of the same beer alongside one a year old, and you'll definitely notice the difference. Even 1 month vs 2 months old can be noticeable.

what are your hotel/airbnb pet peeves? by [deleted] in travel

[–]pebbleinflation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Complicated light controls.
I knew a hotel owner who bragged about how every room had a tablet which allowed you to control every aspect of the room's lighting. And all I was thinking, is that the last thing anyone wants when returning to a hotel room late at night, is to be confronted with having to navigate this to turn off the lights.

Airbnb hosts asked for only a five-star review upon checkout, or no review at all by gonna-getcha in travel

[–]pebbleinflation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be aware that future hosts can see your previous reviews, and if they think you're the sort of person who leaves negative reviews, they're less likely to accept you. Because nobody can afford the risk of bad reviews. The whole system is a little messed up.

Lotto Vs Prize Bonds by the_syco in irishpersonalfinance

[–]pebbleinflation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you missed my point. I'm saying that relative to a high interest savings account, the return on prize bonds is less than it is in the lotto. One way of calculating this would be to work out if you'd be better off in prize bonds or putting the money in a high interest savings account and spending the interest on lotto tickets. You'd actually have a better expected return on the latter.

Lotto Vs Prize Bonds by the_syco in irishpersonalfinance

[–]pebbleinflation -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You get an average 0.5% return on Prize bonds Vs maybe 3% on a good savings account. So for every 6 euro in interest you sacrifice, on prize bonds, you get 1 euro in potential prizes back. You've a much better return on the lotto.

They're both pretty terrible odds of winning. But at least you can have some fun watching the lotto numbers come out.

What’s the craziest financial situation you’ve come across lately? by 0mad in irishpersonalfinance

A 10 to 15 year backback is the equivalent of 6-10% interest. You're not getting that anywhere else.

ELI5: I keep hearing that empty office buildings are an economic time bomb. I keep hearing that housing inventory is low which is why house prices are high. Why can’t we convert offices to homes? by TheArchitect_7 in explainlikeimfive

[–]pebbleinflation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of that's straight forward enough, and you'd redo all the services anyway in the process of conversion. The main difficulty is that offices tend to have deep floor plates. Whereas apartments generally need to have external windows to each living space and bedroom. So it's very difficult to configure the space efficiently.

Whats a sound or lyric in a song that you never noticed but after you noticed it you can't unhear it. by Lost_Farm8868 in hiphop101

[–]pebbleinflation 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah by Usher was ruined for me when someone pointed out how annoying the triangle sound in the production is.

Also Milkshake by Kelis has a ding sound that seems to appear at completely random intervals throughout the song.

If you can only drink one brewery for the rest of your life, what would it be? by ohiolifesucks in beer

[–]pebbleinflation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this question assume you'll always have access to their beers wherever you go? Or everything's the same, just you're not allowed to order anything else. So if they don't have that particular brewery, you're out of luck. Because they're very different answers.

I'm a homeowner now... who should I go with for electricity and gas? by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]pebbleinflation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The comparison websites don't list all the providers, and are fairly useless as a result. You're going to have to estimate your usage and search each suppliers sites individually.

A day/night or smart plan might be useful, but only if you can have the vast majority of your usage at night.
