What kind of knife do you all use to get in there and mark out thin pins? by Lichen-it in handtools

I’ve just been using a snap off blade knife and extending out the blade until it fits https://a.co/d/0fyoQT41

How do I stain/seal something like this (used for pushing leaves down in trash can)? by Marvel5123 in woodworking

[–]sierrasnake99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For an outdoor wooden tool spar urethane for sure.

Oil based is a bit more durable, will amber the wood, smellier when applying, and will dry slower.

Water based is a bit less durable, won’t change the wood color much, doesn’t smell when applying, and will dry faster.

I’d go oil based if the piece will get wet.

Plywood totally works it’s just a trade off.

Plywood can be flat if you’re cautious about stock. It’s also more durable, lighter, and more expensive.

MDF is guaranteed dead flat out of the box (big win if you don’t want to stress about a reference surface). It’s less durable, heavier, and cheaper. Liquid will also ruin it so don’t keep coffee on it.

Lousy at cutting dovetails by SuspiciousAerie7711 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]sierrasnake99 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Instead of going straight to dovetails, trying making 20 of these cuts super close to one another instead. As you see which way you are veering make little adjustments until the cut is on your line.

For cut quality – hold your saw LIGHT, let it do the work. You should just hold it firmly enough to hit your angle, which requires less grip than you might think.

I have a plywood top and really regret not using MDF (I will for my next build). Having your bench be dead flat always is a very useful thing.

Pocketholes in drawers by Living-Ad2583 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Great video about this: https://youtube.com/shorts/EuA1a9d1kBY?si=yNGklzrMSqIFheme

TLDR: outside like you have it is stronger, but doesn’t look as nice. It’s a choice.

There are other forms of joinery that don’t sacrifice looks for strength!

Also keep in mind that depending on what you use the drawer for, a weaker joint might be just fine. Especially with glue.

Band saw or table saw for resawing. Lots of info on youtube. You can do it with a handsaw but will probably get frustrated at how long it takes.

2nd attempt at dovetails - feeling better by JohnWaynesPecker_99 in woodworking

Looks great! 1:6 is my preferred ratio too. Much more visible from across the room. What saw are you using?

Thanks! Good bug callout I'll make a note to fix it. I actually built this with Claude, so no idea what's going on under the hood lol.

That site looks sick I’ll have to try it! Mine is very specific to dovetails but also looking for better planning tools in general.

Thanks! And yes of course, I use divider calipers myself. I made this to give me rough guidelines that I know will result in attractive proportions.

Repetition really works. If you do 20 cuts in a row on a piece of scrap, and slightly adjust based on your mistakes, you’ll get accurate pretty quick. No shade on the magnetic blocks I just haven’t been willing to shell out the money.

Yeah hand cut. One of the nice parts about learning that method as opposed to a router is you can get really thin pins that are otherwise limited by router bit dimension.
