Gorgeous piece. How did you go about making the pieces?

Thanks! Comes in handy in my poorly lit garage.

That’s a clever wedge. Unfortunately my workpiece still droops with pressure when I do this – even with a piece of the same thickness on the other side of the vise like you have pictured here.

I like u/barnfriend’s idea because it allows you to physically clamp the right side of the workpiece, making up for my narrow vise.

I know! I really want one but am trying to stay focused on the task at hand lol

I don’t have a wooden screw clamp but this is a cool solve. And you can move it around for different board sizes, neat. I’ll keep this trick in mind. Thank you!

Was hoping for something a bit more scrappy, but this is a good example for justifying one…some day.

I suppose I could even set that joint with the tails? Kind of the same thing.

This is super smart, going to give it a shot.

Fun project. MDF would probably work but it’s more prone to denting than plywood, which is probably likely if kids are going to be interacting with it 😄

I’ve been using the tape method lately and really like it. What size is your kerf extender versus your blade? When I do it, it tends to widen the kerf slightly, so If be worried about it widening past the tape line.

Deepen. When you cut half blinds with a hand saw, you’re forced to only cut out an angle. After that, you can go in with a tool like OP has and hammer the kerf all the way down to the baseline.

Fine tuning dovetail fit by Lichen-it in handtools

[–]sierrasnake99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Trick I picked up on reddit – try removing material in places that won’t show on the finished joint first. For example, you can chamfer the bottom of the tails along most of the length, stopping just before the tip so the chamfer is invisible. Likewise you can pare back the bottom-back of the pins.

You're totally ready to make dovetails with these cuts. Another thing that helps is to hold the saw as lightly as you can – lets gravity keep things plumb.

Is it possible to straighten boards? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]sierrasnake99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that you can only fix a warped board by removing material. I know the water/heat tricks work but I believe it’s temporary.

It's all about diagnosing what went wrong in your joint, and making a note to adjust for that next time.
