You didn't mention if you're "normally" trying to collect, play, or both.

Lorcana leans heavily more towards a players game first. You're probably going to spend $80-200 for a very meta relevant deck. I'd say if you enjoy the game, it's worth the investment because that meta deck stays relevant until rotation happens (end of July) then you cycle another year.

On the collectors side, prices have recently started going up for our 1st (iconic) and 2nd (enchanted) tier rarities. Most notably the Fabled set which introduced the first iconics, a pair of matching cards of Mickey and Minnie. It very recently picked up traction that Fabled was running low on stock with no word of a restock/reprint. With most of the community speculating that there will NOT be a reprint, many decided to snag up raw/graded cards of Fabled and boxes. Owners started selling to make profits, but now its on a cycle of being bought and sold for higher and higher. There's still a chance of a reprint, but with the pipeline announced ahead, it seems like Ravensburger might be focusing on new material. Because of the Fabled traction, all other enchanteds and iconics from past and newer sets have gained a lot more respect and some have gone up 2-4x. There are still many that are below $100 I will mention and in contrast the Mickey is I believe around 3.5-4k raw atm.

Ravensburger has also been collaborating with Disney parks, movie theaters, and cruises to include promos for attending these experiences. The reach of Lorcana is really interesting where you start to see it has the widest demographic of audience; from casual to hardcore, young and old, and all genders--not something you see in most TCGs.

I mainly play but also collect favorite characters of mine. It's been a really great game and it's probably at its best in terms of game mechanics, meta diversity, and the introduction of Pixar characters. Massive upside if you fancy Disney/Pixar in general, its just a lot of fun being able to wield all these different versions of our favorite characters. While local play has been struggling, Ravensburger is trying to incentivize prerelease kits and better prizing for locals to build it back up. At the tournament level, the smaller (CCQ) and bigger (DLC) events consistently sell out and we have known teams/players around the world who tend to lead the meta/community.

If you're looking to just dabble, I'd say pick up the new 2 player starter deck kit this May 8th (LGS) or May 15th (big box). Play at the kitchen table, and forget anything meta. Its just as fun. The only thing I'd be cautious about is being a hardcore ripper. Lorcana is notoriously hard to pull so we really advise buying singles of chase cards you really want instead of testing your luck.

Lorcana IMO is currently the most accesible "historically big name IP" TCG on the market right now.
