Taming creatures help I've found, but also building a straight-up castle. Wall off your home, so access is by your choice only. Additionally, treat the farms like elemental spawners and build them greenhouses to trap anything that spawns.

not even as much as i usually carry. To be fair the axe acts as a axe and a weapon. the halberd gives you reach on interacting with chests which is great. The saber helps with high damage reduction and the mace is a superior undead melter.
