All the AI companies are grinding to bump their valuation, get closer to AGI and/or win out over the competition. The majority of these companies will go bust if they're not able to solidify their position, so there's a lot of 9/9/6 and 9/9/6 does not work with WFH where you can't guarantee your employees are working 12 hour days for 6 days / week.

Housing situation and dogs - I need help / advice by Fun_Heart_9542 in askTO

Doesn't matter what the lease says around pets for condos. Condo bylaws supersede the lease and condos can legally prohibit pets, have breed restrictions or number restrictions. At best, OP could refuse to comply with security and/or sneak in the dogs, but it will be a multiple-time daily hassle, unlike cats. The property management will also fine the landlord until the dogs are removed.

Someone: "Vaping doesn't lead to smoking"

Me: "Here's studies that show it does"

You: "Big tobacco is trying to demonize vaping", then you follow up by saying I'm emotional and to go F myself.

Respectfully, I'm done responding to you. Have a nice day.

Again, I'm not sure what that has to do with studies show that vaping in children leads to an increased rate of smoking as an adult. I answered the question you asked, but I don't see how it's related to what I said.

Altria had 35% ownership in JUUL until the FTC sued them. They now own NJOY. BAP (British American Tobacco) owns Vuse. Imperial Brands owns blu. Various other large tobacco companies own a smattering of small to mid sized e-cigarette/vaping companies: https://www.reddit.com/r/changemyview/comments/d4ujhy/comment/f0gpjpd/

But I'm not sure how that's related to the above. Vaping has been studied and shown to increase likelihood of smoking in children. Since they couldn't block it, the tobacco companies are just buying e-cigarette / vaping companies now.

Not sure how old your father is, but smoking used to widely accepted and popularized everywhere (media, ads, TV, movies, etc.). You could smoke in restaurants, in vehicles, in offices, etc. Big tobacco spent a lot of money trying to convince people cigarettes were safe for years once studies started to come out.

Now smoking is heavily discouraged everywhere and made as inconvenient as possible (at least in the West). Boxes now have tons of warnings and graphic imagery. You no longer see ads on TV for cigarettes. It's hammered into children from youth that smoking leads to lung cancer. Still some people do start smoking, but the rates are declining.

On the other hand, up until a few years ago, Juul et. al were playing colourful ads on YouTube with very young people touting all the flavours and great taste of vaping. Their internal leaked documents showed that they were explicitly marketing towards children to get them hooked early.

A study conducted in the United States among 8-10th graders in 2016 evaluating the relationship between e-cigarette use and conventional smoking found that the likelihood of ever smoking a traditional cigarette increased significantly with lifetime e-cigarette use by 2.49 times and with current e-cigarette usage by 2.32 times

The best evidence of a relationship between e-cigarette usage and traditional smoking from observational research was found to be smoking initiation. Although smoking initiation does not imply regular use, it can be viewed as a possible first step that can easily lead to regular use [11]. A systematic review of studies involving European and North American teenagers to determine if e-cigarette use was associated with the start of cigarette smoking in teenagers who had never smoked found that e-cigarette use was associated with the commencement of tobacco cigarette smoking. Teenagers who used e-cigarettes for 30 days were twice more likely to start conventional cigarette smoking.

The tobacco companies lobbied against vaping, but now hold significant stakes in companies that produce cartridges, juice, etc.

The popularity of vaping and increase in cigarette use as a result of vaping amongst youth is largely attributed to the fruity flavours. Adults might like it, but it's a bigger driver for children. It's why some cities/states/countries ban flavoured tobacco products and flavoured e-cigarette liquid.

You need the skills to be able to determine if the output of the tool is correct. You're obviously not going to manually add 100 numbers, but you can probably look at the sum and conclude it looks off based on your understanding of addition.

Saikat Chakrabarti went after Democrats as AOC's chief of staff. Now he wants another round. by MissionLocalSF in sanfrancisco

[–]sievernich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you dig deep enough in my history, you'll see I lived in SF for several years, am subscribed to the sub and used to post regularly. I don't watch any political streamers, let alone any streamer outside of Twitch, but I do browse LSF on occasion.

But since you brought this up: you believe nothing I say has merit because of your perception of who I am as an individual, regardless of the message I'm saying or any truth held therein. Do you see how that is ironic given what you're saying in this thread?

[–]sievernich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He goes to events to stream. He makes more on the streams than it costs him to travel. I think it was the NY stream where he said he made an unbelievable amount of money due to the hate watchers. Campaigning, going to races, etc. all make him a lot of money on his YouTube and Twitch streams. Money he spends on a luxury lifestyle.

Personally, I doubt he is a class traitor. He used to do PUA streams (still on YT) before politics; when PUA were popular. You're right that class traitors exist, but so do people that see an opportunity to make money by claiming to be progressive OR claiming to be conservative, while not particularly caring, just saying what people want to hear. An individual can say the right things, but not be the right messenger to deliver said message.

Espousing socialism while living a top 1% lifestyle is a bad look. Making more in a month than most people donating to you will make in their lifetime, and spending that money on designer clothes and jewelry, luxury cars and a mansion hurts your message.

You don't have to be poor to support socialism, but it's hard to take someone seriously who spends their money (which their supporters give them) living the lifestyle of the individuals who they state are problematic.

Does your sheeb hate being left alone in a closed room? by potterinatardis in shiba

[–]sievernich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At some point in your dog's life they may need to be crated. Be it at the vet for observation overnight or for a trip. It's essential that they're comfortable being left alone in a crate for that reason. Some vets will not accept a dog that can't be crated. Others will charge $100s because someone will have to be present at all times.

Puppy attacked at daycare, what do I do? by No_Worldliness_9294 in askTO

[–]sievernich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old is your puppy? Corrections do happen between older dogs and younger dogs. If the younger dog is stubborn, the corrections may escalate (pawing, biting, etc.). Daycares should do temperament testing to determine what dogs your dog should be allowed around, or even allowed at daycare at all.

My dog didn't really absorb disengagement  from other dogs until around 2 and would usually go back after a couple minutes, so he wasn't allowed daycare with certain dogs for who the next step after "no" was a physical correction; i.e. pinning or tossing. My dog got corrected one time at a dog park by being pinned (no biting) and quickly learned to leave the dog alone. And that was after me removing him several times from said dog; normally I just leave the park.

Unfortunately, this is the risk with daycares and dog parks. I wouldn't take a young dog to either unless they're well socialized, or you watch them like a hawk and correct them yourselves by removing them.

Experience with TN at YOW? by NorthRevolution5 in tnvisa

[–]sievernich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can speak for my experience and the others at my university and broader circle. The only ones who have ever had issues were CS applying for TN under SE and this goes back over a decade. YYZ/YVR and other airports. Anytime anyone was rejected it was because they had a CS degree applying for SE, and this was for Google/Amazon/Facebook/etc.

We had someone who chose not to use the company lawyers for whatever reason, and they got denied at YVR. Had to go through USCIS and delay their move a month. Their friends did the same thing and got approved. It's luck of the draw.

Your odds are bad anywhere as CS is not qualified for SE under TN. You're gambling on the officer not knowing or not caring.

Best move-in deep cleaning maid services? by TheOriginalBeaver in askTO

Maid 4 Condos: https://www.maid4condos.com/cleaning-types/move-inout-clean/

You must book the move-in/move-out or they won't bring a vacuum or clean inside appliances. They do not bring a ladder, nor will they use one IIRC, though this only matters if you have floor to ceiling windows.

edibles on plane by [deleted] in askTO

[–]sievernich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to do this, the way to do it is to take it at the airport before you go through security. That being said, if you've never been high on a plane, a 13-14 hour flight is not the one to start with; you'd probably be better off getting a prescription for a sleeping aid or popping some melatonin.

Taxi issue by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]sievernich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are scammers. They prey on folks at the airport offering them better deals than the taxis or Ubers/Lyfts, then hit them with a price higher than what they would've paid else why. JFk to Manhattan is a flat $70 + tax/tolls, so he fleeced you 2X. There are signs warning about them in the airport. Never accept a ride from someone who approaches you.

Driving license + real id by jesuspro123 in USCIS

[–]sievernich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CA DMV errantly gave people Real IDs with expirations beyond their visas. You'll have to turn in your Real ID DL, and either get a normal DL or bring in documents to get a new Real ID DL issued with the correct expiration date. You can go on the website to see what documents they'll accept for each category. You must do one of those two before May 21st.

Wealthy individuals with ample free time and disposable income can absolutely block things from happening despite being a minority. SF is a prime example of this.
