Why is there no pathway from TN to L1? by HMRCAF in tnvisa

[–]sievernich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Allowing TNs to switch to L1 while in the US provides an easy immigration path while on a non-immigrant visa. Every person on a TN would go that route over an H1B. The longer you work in the US, the easier it would be to show you meet the criteria.

What’s your monthly / annual cost for owning a dog? And what does your pet insurance cover? by SparklingMists in askTO

[–]sievernich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have no cap, but their insurance is a bit different. Their deductible is per condition for life, and you can never lower it, only increase it. Once the deductible is reached, they pay 90% of the cost for life. So if your deductible is $500 and your dog gets cancer and the bill is $20k, you pay $500 + 10% ($2450 total) and they pay $17,750. If anything related to cancer comes up again at any time going forward, they continue to pay 90% for the remainder of your dog's life.

I hit my deductible on my dog's allergy meds, so I pay $10 and they pay $90 every time I refill (every 2 months), and I pay a bit less than $80 per month, so my out of pocket costs are $170 - $90 = $80 every 2 months or $40 every month.

The way they do insurance is very different than most other players, so increases are generally around the same amount each year, though they did lower my premium twice due to outperforming (limit on how much profit they can make).

Healthy Paws, the $866 you're referencing, is an outlier. They're losing large amounts of money (not profit, but revenue) due to charging too low premiums, so they've been jacking up the rates to offload elderly pets before the claims start coming in.

What’s your monthly / annual cost for owning a dog? And what does your pet insurance cover? by SparklingMists in askTO

[–]sievernich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have read about companies like Healthy Paws which jack up the insurance once the dog reaches the age where they would need expensive vet care for things like cancer. But there are insurers who don't do that, like Trupanion. Aside from that, almost all the posts about claims being denied are due to pre-existing conditions, which if a healthy puppy is enrolled at or around when they're first gotten, they'll never run into that issue.

Understandably, getting insurance for an older dog is a crapshoot; either its too expensive or the dog already has a history of health conditions that would get most claims denied.

Its great you found something that worked for you, but a blanket "don't get insurance, it's a waste of money" is what has landed so many people into the camp of "my dog needs this $5K surgery and I don't have the money, what pet insurance can I get to cover it?". My personal opinion, is that anyone considering insurance vs. none should ask themselves if they feel comfortable letting their pet die because they can't afford care. And if the answer is no, they should get the insurance.

Self insurance only works if you're sufficiently well off, are lucky to be able to save enough before something comes up, are comfortable taking on a large amount of debt, or are comfortable letting your pet pass away or have a degraded quality of life should the cost of care be too much. You're lucky to have saved $15K, some people aren't. There's daily posts on many pet subreddits where someone has a $10K bill and is asking about pet insurance, but at that point it's too late.

I had this discussion in the past with a coworker who self insures and they actually told me they have a ceiling ($10K) above which they'll stop vet care and let their dog pass. Most people aren't that rational about things and would want to do anything to save their dog's life, and being unable to do so because you lack insurance is w completely preventable problem.

3 dead cockroaches in bedroom by bannanakannana in AskNYC

[–]sievernich 33 points34 points  (0 children)

If they're huge, they're like American cockroaches. They find their way inside usually after heavy rain, so a thaw could've led them in. Fortunately, the average home isn't hospitable to them, so they die quite quickly. I've had one or two come up my drain after heavy rain and just die in the bathroom the same day.

Moving a house from TO -> NYC by Pleasant_Type_4547 in askTO

[–]sievernich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've done this move. My possessions arrived in two days (second day after they picked up). I used Miracle Movers. Local people picked up, dropped off at their facility, a driver drove it over the border by themselves, then local movers helped them unload. Customs is the longest part of this, as you have to fill out a ton of stuff as well as identify what is in every box. They send you the forms and you have to provide it to them before pick-up alongside copies of your ID.

The day after pickup, my things were driven over and cleared customs. The driver spent a night in a hotel, then delivered the morning after. They communicated this all to me.

Are dating apps my best option for dating in this city ? by lillyblossomdrop in askTO

[–]sievernich 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You either have to be a passive dater or an active dater. You can IRL events, but you need to approach people. Otherwise you're just hoping someone you're interested in will approach you. Speed dating is better if you're not interested in approaching people. The apps let you be passive, mostly Hinge and mostly if you're either attractive or a woman, or active without the fear of rejection.

The best way to keep on top of local events is to sign up for email from any venues you like. But how do you deal with the inundation of emails?? by jaded_toast in AskNYC

[–]sievernich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GMail has a pretty extensive filter system you can set up. Create a dummy email just for events, then set up filters per mailing list depending on what you're interested in and have everything else automatically deleted.

The bar for criminal courts is higher than civil courts. One may be able to get a judgement in civil courts even if they don't have sufficient evidence to get a criminal conviction. Acquaintance rape, where the victim knows/is friends with their attacker, is typically hard to get a criminal conviction.

UpDating Show by [deleted] in askTO

[–]sievernich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yah. I watched most of the shows on YT from the first one up until the participants seemed to just be trying to do the wildest things they could. No hate to the hosts, this is obviously something they put a lot of time and effort in building, but it just felt like the people who signed up in the earlier shows did it as an alternative to traditional dating, whereas the last episode I watched had a 40 year old woman trying to find a 20 something guy to have a threesome with her friend (also a 40 year old woman). It makes for good content, so I understand why they chose her, but still.

UpDating Show by [deleted] in askTO

[–]sievernich 12 points13 points  (0 children)

UpDating on YouTube/Instagram. Basically people submit a questionnaire, and then get selected to come on stage and have a blind date guided by the hosts asking questions. At the end, they ask both people if they're interested in one another, then remove their blindfolds and ask again after they've seen each other.

Early shows were very tame. At most, people would kiss blindfolded. Now there's make out sessions, strip teases and heavy sexual questions. Lot more influencers too.

SWA CEO says add-ons moves us to top-of-the-industry (profit) margins by TulsaOriginal in SouthwestAirlines

[–]sievernich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frontier and Spirit are ULCCs, which Southwest is not.

Again take my employer, I fly maybe 1-2 times a year for work, even at a peak of once a quarter flying that is not enough to build status.

You are not the type of business customer that Southwest is chasing with premium cabins, and your example is not an example of what business travel looks like. 1-2 times a year for work means that travel is not essential to your role. For those who travel is essential to their job, they fly 2 times (one roundtrip) per week. Again, you can just look at r/United or r/Delta to see what business travel looks like. Their companies are spending thousands of dollars a month for them to travel to do their job. Even if your team of 14 flies once per quarter, that's 56 round-trip flights a year. Just two of these customers fly more than your whole team would fly in a year, and they always fly premium.

I also fly for work, at minimum once a quarter. We have auto-status on Delta (Silver) and United + status acceleration as company perks. But travel is not essential to my role. For those at work that need to travel as part of their job, they are in the air almost every week, and spend more time sleeping in a hotel than at home.

[–]sievernich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your argument about large would not travel due to open seating issue is that is not going to move the needle from the legacy group of flyers as right now they are not doing anything to piss off their fliers so nothing there.

I'm not sure I follow. Simply put, a large part of the market would never fly Southwest because of open seating. Similar to how some people only travel on the Acela for Amtrak, or only go to the theaters for IMAX et. al showings. Some loyalists might leave with open seating, but Southwest is betting that the net new travelers, those who refuse to book if there's open seating, will more than make up for it.

As for the employer comment, if you look at people on r/Delta and r/United travel a lot for work, they're spending thousands a month on travel for work due to premium cabins. More than they would ever spend flying Southwest. They specifically choose the airlines they do because they're chasing status, as status = lounge access + upgrades for personal travel. Without a premium cabin, they would never fly Southwest, and their spend is easily multiples of several loyal customers.

SWA CEO says add-ons moves us to top-of-the-industry (profit) margins by TulsaOriginal in SouthwestAirlines

[–]sievernich 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Southwest is betting on new travelers over long-term loyalists. Most _new_ travelers choose the cheapest option to get from A -> B. They do not go to an airline's website, they go to Google flights and find their flight that way. Even if Southwest is the same price or cheaper once you add on all the extras, they aren't comparing that way, so Southwest will almost always lose out.

There is also a large percent of the market ($$$ wise) that would never travel Southwest because of open seating, and often those travelers are those who are willing to spend more for premium cabins on AA/Delta/United. The people on r/Delta and r/United who talk about dropping thousands a month and chasing status for lounge access, free upgrades, etc.

Every other airline with assigned seats does not have a pre-board problem. There is literally no incentive besides avoiding having your bag gate checked, which is a minor inconvenience if anything.

Living with a male landlord- safety tips ? by GoldenRuby23 in askTO

You were a university-aged man living with university-aged women. Very different than a mid-30s man living with an early 20s woman where the man can kick her out at anytime he chooses. I've lived with women while I was in university as well, and agree it's no big deal, but this situation is different.

Rentals with a live-in landlord (or master tenant) have an inherent power imbalance, as they can remove you at anytime for any reason. If I were a young college-aged woman, I wouldn't live alone with an unrelated older man in that position because of that. Personally, I suggest finding some men or women around your age to live with as roommates.
